  1. I still like Star Trek . . . on Activision Sues Star Trek Over Franchise Decay · · Score: 1

. . . dispite recent history. I'd like to see this finally convince Viacom that they need to do something about the eroding franchise. Of course, it's equally likely that they'd just use this as another excuse to abandon it all together. Given that they lost money on the last movie, the TV show's ratings are less than stellar, and now a licencee is suing them, they may vary well want to get rid of it all together. If so, I just hope they sell it to someone who'd do justice to what little dignity it has left.

  2. There's lots of this now on Science Faction · · Score: 3, Insightful

The MRI concept was inspired by Dr McCoy's diagnostic beds in sickbay. I read an article that NASA was working on an Ion Engine, which makes up two thirds of a TIE fighter. And in my opinion, flip phones look a lit like communicators . . . .

  3. killing competition? on IE6 SP1 Will Be Last Standalone Version · · Score: 2, Insightful

Microsoft didn't kill anyone with IE. Netscape lost the browser wars because they had an inferior product (after v3.0) while Internet Explorer continued to improve. I was a Netscape Supporter to the last, but even I got tired of waiting for them to catch up. Microsoft beat Netscape, but we can't hardly blame them for that. That's what competition is all about.

  4. Telus is not a refutable company on Canadian Telco Telus Moves All Call Traffic to the Net · · Score: 1

I'm a Canadian, and I used to live in one of the Telus-dominated areas of the country. When I moved out of their service area, I called and asked them to cancel my service, but they didn't. In fact, they continued to bill me for four months on a number that wasn't in use. I didn't know until a collection agency called me trying to round up $250 dollars in back charges. I told them to $#%@ off, then sent a letter to Telus about it, but I don't expect them to do anything about. They're no Micro$soft, but they've got a firm enough hold on the market that customer service is a luxury they don't need to offer. They might as well spell their name Telu$.

  5. Network Security on Secret Service Goes War Driving · · Score: 3, Interesting

Maybe this publicity will create some market for a security product to be used for wireless. A lot of companies don't realize that wireless networks allow potential hackers an easy way around a firewall, and as such, there's little demand for a product to prevent such a breach. If the SS can bring that to light with their Pringles can, maybe that will change. And maybe Pringles will get into network hardware too. That'd be ironic.

  6. Viruses working for us . . . on The Dangers of Being A Microbiologist · · Score: 1

This reminds me of the time Voyager had to form an aliance with the Borg. I mean, I'm all for using viruses as tools, and I appreciate the irony of using one of our species traditional enemy, (forgive the melodrama,) but what stops these viruses from mutating into something other than what there were meant for. I don't even mean something dangerous, nescessarily, just that viruses have a way of changing when you least expect it.

Yeah, actually it does look different. All that lightning, (plasma, whatever you want to call it) inside the CD leaves burn marks in the disc. It creates a cool sort of erratic patteren that looks a bit like the Galactic Empire symbol. I doubt if it would read in a CD player . . . .

Grab a coster or an AOL CD and give that microwave thing a try. The pictures on the site are cool, but they don't do it justice. A few words of advice though; don't leave it in for very long. Five or ten seconds will do fine. It won't damage the microwave if you leave it longer, but cleaning melted CD off the tray isn't so cool. It also looks better if you do it in the dark. Flick the lights off, start the microwave, and enjoy the show!

  13. Linux for Mac on QuickTime To Move To MPEG-4 · · Score: 1

Maybe this is just a step in the right direction for Apple: first they start using standardized video formats, (we can hope,) and eventually they'll release an Linux-Based Mac OS. If they went open source, they might gain the edge they need to become a serious competitor on the OS market again.

This has been long over due. I'm sick of NTFS, Linux was close but not quite there, and don't get me started on Fat32. Anyway, I guy has to wonder if it will include and API to allow us to query it directly using SQL.

  15. Jar Jar must not die on Star Wars: AOTC Trailer on Monster Inc · · Score: 0

I agree that Jar Jar Binks is the most annoying Star Wars character ever, possibly the most annoying fictional character in history. It's for that reason that he cannot die in Episode II; There's no one worthy of slaying the most annoying character ever. Not Obi-wan, not Jabba the Hutt, not Palpatine, not even Boba Fett, (although Fett is pretty close). No one in Episode II is worthy. Of course, in Episode III . . .

I'm almost afraid to watch teasers for Episode II. Two days before Episode I hit then theatres, I saw a track called Qui-Gon's Noble End on the soundtrack. Spoilers lake that can take away for one's enjoyment of a movie, especially and epic-style flick like Star Wars.

The best game I've played in a month was Bridgebuilder. You can find it at http://www.bridgebuilder-game.com/. It's not overly educational in and of itself, (unless you want to build bridges in a two dimentional universe for a living,) but it developes skills which are transfurable to real engineering, math, programming, etc. A real gem, in my humble opinion.
