    You, however, are not reasonably correct. Social can mean any sort of gathering and communicating...and certainly chat rooms an email fit the bill. So do the slashdot forums.

    Now you can be anti-social in a chat room or IM conversation...but that's just another story.

    After reading the article, I bave two things to say:

    1. These aren't exactly easily exploitable remote root's like windows has had 50 of. There really is no comparison.

    2. Installing XP yesterday, I was r00ted before I could get to Windows Update. This is just. plain. ridiculous.

    I don't know about you guys, but there really is no question of what OS to use if you really want it to work right, be stable, and be secure. NO QUESTION. "usability" is close enough in Linux for me. AND ISN'T A VIRUS EVERY FIFTEEN MINUTES SOME SORT OF USABILITY PROBLEM?>??

    I just set up both a home and pro pc. Every account I created was unpassworded. Every account was admin. Anyone who says different, is running a different OS. Both were installed on fresh machines.

    this is obviously retarded on microsoft's part. anyone who denies it is not running the XP i got from microsoft.

    ps - the pro machine was r00ted before I could install patches from windows update. made me so mad.

    How about I complain about the problem that windows has had since its latest version. It crashed. All the time. At least my OS works reliably.

    and, re: your sig about gamecube's dying, well, I just bought one. Sales are up. and your sig references an article in april. see here. It says, specifically, "the Nintendo GameCube has now officially reached No. 1 -- it's America's top-selling home video game console, according to direct sales data from the nation's leading retailers." Half a million systems. Man, you are permanently -1, troll in my book.

    I agree. stupid nvidia smp...crap. you can try turning AGP off, that helps. and the usual noapic, etc. Stupid binary drivers.

    I submit that the only ones that like Nvidia's binary drivers are ones who use standard kernels (never recompile) on standard systems (no funny configurations, no smp...). For the rest of us, ARGHHT!

    ever tried getting a tnt2 to work in an smp box? no? didn't think so. It doesn't work with nvidia's drivers.

    However, I can use a crappy card with open drivers to get better performance on that smp box than the nvidia card with it's open drivers.

    Binary drivers can really bite the big one.

    Yes, I agree that electronic patents are not like mechanical or other patents - the tech moves so fast that the patents should move fast too. Here's an idea, software patents should last 6 months (because of "speed of industry) and electronic patents should last 5 years.

    But yeah, you're probably right.

    I think the most important thing about this whole story is that this is probably workable DRM on Nintendo's part.

    Write-once chips, downloadable content, closed "player" system. Sounds just like DRM to me. And it goes for super-cheap in China.

    I think this is a good idea on Nintedo's part. They make money (using old content that is now "free" to them) and the people in china theoretically get a cool new mini-system. Nintendo breaks into the Chinese market...

    Very interesting.

    Isn't that the point of patents? You come up with a good idea, patent it, and then it's YOUR idea. Why isn't a 4-direction switch a good, logical, unique idea. It seems like a good idea to me. It's not like it's not original. What's the problem? sure, it is annoying for Nintendo's competitors. But isn't that the idea of patents? I'm sure Edison's competitors were annoyed at all of his ideas. *shrug*.

    Whether or not you're acting innocent or you've never really heard, a simple google search for "snes emulator" will get you good results. Same for any other system that was semi-popular.

    While emulating hardware is not illegal, downloading the games you never paid for and playing them technically is, but I don't think Nintendo will pull and RIAA and bust down your door for playing Mario Bros. 1 on your NES emulator. But what do i know?

    Your system has tons more power than an n64. It's just that the emulation isn't very good yet. I assure you, you would murder any 6-year old system if you both were running natively compiled code.

    First off, I agree with you about Nintendo and Miyamoto. Both are great, I just bought a gamecube, it has great games, yadda yadda.

    However, I have to disagree with you about "mainstream"-ness of games. Last I checked, the games industry grossed more than movies. I imagine its one of the biggest entertainment-related industries out there. What...maybe the music biz is bigger. I really don't know. But i'd say that vids are huge, and they ARE mainstream.

  23. stability for me on "Budget" Chips go Head-to-Head · · Score: 1

    since we're sharing anecdotes, for me, the brand of hardware doesn't matter. I'm running a used SMP intel/via setup now, and my only stability problems were from an old video card. My previous setup (that I use for a secondary system now) was AMD/via.

    Both systems are rock-solid stable, without any problems. The reasons for instability could always be traced back to the operating system and its drivers.

    The reason I like Open Source OS's so much is it is much better to tell what's broken so i can fix it. But for these two systems Windows XP is up just as long as Mandrake Linux, and they'll both be shut down at the same time when I go home for break...

    I wonder. Assuming this is all about stock price, Darl & co. will hold on to their stock until the scheme fails, and then they must sell. Do you think this drop could signal a selling frenzy, which in turn causes SCO to simply crash into dust?

    I think that what darl's saying is that if you put code up on GPL, then it is closed and that only SCO has rights to it.

    Which makes no sense. yeah I know.

    because if GPL'd code becomes open, then SCO has no case against linux (they distribute linux under the gpl, including there code. hint: check netcraft for sco.com). But if GPL'd code is author-owned, then SCO is in violation of kernel writer's code, for example. Either way, they are screwed. *smile*
