I fail to see the point of this hack. Why would you hack a disposable eleven dollar camera when you can buy a decent camera that has a USB-cable already attached and produces way better images ?

The concept of Hack-everything-hackable sometimes is a bit...sad?

  9. The future seems bleak...or does it ? on Space Shuttle Columbia Breaks Up Over Texas · · Score: 3, Insightful
Aside from being a personal disaster for the families of the killed astronauts the Columbia failure is a major potential setback for the space exploration efforts of the western world. ISS is dependent on the STS for deliveries. Even if Columbia was unable to do go there she did other important work freeing up the newer shuttles for ISS-related activities. The sensible thing would probably be to buy a few progress, soyuz and heavy lifter sorties to temporarily replace Columbias workload.

The long term solution (circa five years)would be to completely replace the STS with a new, cheap and safe reusable launch system.

Expect the cancellation of "Prometheus" shortly, the billion will be needed to replace the Columbia instead.

Expect massive criticism and the selection of a NASA scapegoat by US congress, some of your congresscritters will want to destroy the entire space effort.

Expect speeches by Bush Jr and President Cheney about the necessity to beat the Red Chinese and the former Soviets from being the only ones with a space presence.

Space is too important to give up because of an old and slowly decaying STS. Replacements can be cheap and fast. If any of you have read "Encounter with Tiber" by Buzz Aldrin and Steven Barnes you know what Im talking about.

This story is very funny. The only funnier thing are all the morons who post here and actually suspect that its true. IANAL, but believe me, any and all governments land hard with both steel-shod boots on the backs of people who spread worms and viruses. Look what happened to the asshole who created melissa. Multiply by a couple of orders of magnitude and there it is. Life in prison.

I would gladly pay a monthly fee, say up to the price of an ordinary music CD, 159 SEK (about 16 US$), if I was able to download a set number of MP3-files, like 10 or 12 per month. If I only found 8 or so one month the remainder gets added to my account so I can dl them later. MP3 is just so darned convenient!

My usage of Kazaa and Direct Connect would drop significantly if such a service was available. I think it is really strange that such a business opportunity has been overlooked by the record industry. I would generate more revenue for them this way than I do today. This year I have bought seven CD:s so far. This model would have me buying 12.

  16. National ID card. on The Pentagon Wants Your Secrets · · Score: 1
From what I gather this is not so unexpected. I mean, you yanks have no national id-number like we have in Sweden. The "personnummer" as it is called is necessary whenever you interact with varoius government and corporate entities. It also allows for easy ID-checking that is quite a bit more reliable than the american system(s).

We also have very strong laws against misuse of computer databases, you need a license of sorts to keep information directly attributable to a certain person in a database if it is for any other use than personal. Doing a database crosscheck is also forbidden unless you have permission. It is not a given that any agency or organization who wants to do that gets a license. We are pretty strict when it comes to issues of personal integrity and computers.

The swedish principle of public scrutiny, "offentlighetsprincipen" also requires that any government, county or regional adminstartions or agencies have to make publicly available all information that is not a threat to national security. Even then, the fact that it has been classified is public.

You need more openness and less paranoia .

We have had a very well developed mobile phone network for about 15 years here in sweden. At first an analog system @450 MHz and later at 900 MHz. Coverage ? 90-95% of the populated areas. For the last ten years or so several GSM carriers that cover something like 95-98% of the population has been operational. Everyone, and I do mean everyone can afford to use mobile phones. I think about 70% of all people in sweden have their own GSM phone. But, of course, that is due to our "outdated" infrastructure. You really crack me up man!
