If everyone mirrored/posted links to mirrors more often perhaps the/. effect wouldn't be nearly as harsh and sites wouldn't take to drastic measures to try to keep their sites going.
Well, I'm guessing first the feds will laugh at them and then maybe they'll start the process of trying to get funding to pay them. By the time all the paperwork is done I would guess sco would be long into chapter 11, one can hope. In either case it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize suing feds is prob not going to help you much.
At first it seems like a good idea, protect the kids and all that, but what this would lead to is easy censorship. Filtering right now is a nightmare with probably just as many ways to bypass it as to filter in the first place. READ: anyone that wants to get information always can. Also, this would never work, the us would try to enforce it worldwide without making much headway.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but can't the fcc only regulate broadcast tv? AFAIK this doesn't affect cable or satelite. In which case the impact is rather minimal.
on the upside maybe some company that doesn't track every click you make will sell a better product. Hell maybe not all companies are interested in targetted advertising revenue.
I fail to see how this is relevent. This whole article is just going to be eaten up by the/. trolls. SMP support has been coming along in openbsd for the last year+, mostly "borrowing" code from netbsd. Yes SMP is coming and it will bring them up to date with the rest of the world. There really isn't anything to see here...move along.
We are told that personal items such as cell phones aren't to be used, though it's unenforced. Amusingly enough I have things like my laptop and reference books that I use for work. (I tired of fighting to get a decent computer and any reference books at all.) If they enforced their policy then I would be unable to work. Tell them you're fine with their policy if they pay for your computer, books, cell phone, etc.
Clearly the fbi is up to no good, yet again. But hasn't the nsa been able to do this for 10+ years due to echelon? Though, I fail to see how the government should be allowed to place the burden on isp's.
I certainly hope it improves their old installer. Debian installs have to be some of the most frustrating things I've ever come across. Mysteriously not seeing network cards, failing to see the hard drive...UGH! Maybe this will bring it somewhere near where other distros installers were 5 years ago.
I'll preface this with saying linux's annoyances were annoying enough that I use bsd on all systems I run and maintain. (Openbsd for the servers, esp nice for firewalls, and Freebsd on my workstations)
1) iptables SUCKS
look if you think it's good then you haven't used pf on openbsd. Besides the fact that it isn't even stateful...it has state tracking...which is not stateful. I rather hoped 2.6 would get a decent firewalling tool but alas.
2) fork bombs. Linus took the stance that fork bombs should be dealt with in the shell. Openbsd takes a better approach...it seems a forkbomb and the kernel kills the parent process so the system can go about it's buisness.
3) LOAD. linux CANNOT deal with load, 2.4, I haven't tried 2.5/6. Bsd time and time again have shown it's ability to deal with high loads, see hotmail and freebsd.
4) distribution fragmentation. I think this is one of the biggest killers of linux. There are basically 3 bsd's: 1 for workstations, 1 for servers, and 1 for embedded devices. Free, open, net respectively.
5) Packaging. rpm's suck...no really who here hasn't dealt with dependencies from hell. Sorcerer and gentoo are basically copying what the bsd ports collections have been doing for years. Debian and debian like packaging are the only packaging systems on linux that don't suck.
6) exploits...kernel ptrace bugs anyone? I mean sure it's fun to recompile your kernel every 2-3 weeks because you're a geek but after a while there are better things to do with your free time...like waste it here. Oh for more on kernel exploits please see the papers/presentation slides from blackhat and defcon.
How does one make linux not suck? Don't use it.
reiser is not stable for production, read committ logs both ext3 and reiser are still having fs corruption fixes. If you don't want your data trashed run ext2. Yes fsck sucks, get a ups and suck it up until a decent fs comes out for linux. JFS will prob be good since ibm is throwing lots of weight behind it. I don't know I'm using ffs-softupdates on freebsd and openbsd so I don't have to deal with fs corruption or fsck slowness.
It's worse than tho. No only do you have to have all the md5 sums BUT computing md5 sums on such a large scale becomes expensive in terms of cpu time. I know because I have a program to recurse and check md5's of my mp3s to weed out dupes.
well the cisco vpn client has a slight drawback. Bsd is not supported. I haven't tried linux binary emulation but gauging the diffculty of getting the linux client to work in the first place I somehow doubt it's success. My laptop is freebsd and is the only machine I use at work. However at work it's wired only no vpn required. Remote work results in all sorts of headaches involving vmware sessesions and domain voodoo (yes in windows) to even check my email.
sounds you like obviously need some empty ack queueing openbsd goodness. Since setting this up my 376kbit/s up and 2.5mbit down cable has performance i've never seen before. I can max the upstream with no effect to throughput or latency on other transfers (ie webpages, pings, online game play.) I know linux has QoS but I don't find it very ellegant in the least.
i would certainly agree. I was a linux user but have switched purely to bsd because of complaints in the way they handle firewalling, nat, etc. That said openbsd is the only os i know of that has code audits. (officially) Linux seems more concerned with new features, new devel, etc. Either way vmware still isn't support by openbsd sadly:-)
Well, I'm sorry you have a bad cell phone. I have a rather nice samsung. It is my phone, I don't have a lan line. But i guarantee you it's better than any VoIP setup...esp. over a cable modem w/ unreliable upstream...maybe the side coming to you is clear. Either way that comment was just absurd as my cell phone is crystal clear and a lot of times clearer than my noisy phone lines at my parents house.

how is this a problem? Everything is integrated. It would make a great car computer!

actually i had a msdn final copy of win2kpro the summer of 99

step 1: bother people that hate you step 2... step 3: PROFIT!
devfs means extra typing why would I want that? I much prefer /dev/hda and I will continue to compile my kernels in this fashion.

i've been online journaling since before it was called a blog and ya know the word blog is stupid. It's a friggin journal, leave it at that.
1) launch p2p app 2) ...
3) PROFIT!

care to offer the name of an open source client?

some of us are contract so there is no such thing as overtime pay there are just billable hours.

hey i forget how to guard against that, what's the fix?
