  1. Mandrake User's Board on Alternative To the 200-Line Linux Kernel Patch · · Score: 1

When I used to be the admin on the Mandrake User's Board, now http://mandrivausers.org/ , we adopted a number of policies governing user "politeness" and "helpfulness" with a focus on new users. It was a huge success and we had a large number of newbies! I mention all of this with a sense of nostalgia but also to show that not all Linux Forums are a bunch of jerks on a power/ego trip. Of course, it helped that I was out of work at the time and it was Spring :) Here's a shout out to the moderators and other admin's on the board! To Paul, Mystified, Spiny, Scoopy, Tyme and all other hard working Mods! Love Cannonfodder..

People do dumb stuff all the time. And scare people.. usually their reaction is.. I didn't mean too, wasn't thinking.. Should they get sent to jail for it? Maybe, depends on the extent of the stupidity. But the police responded and arrested him. At this point, a little research.. is he violent? Does he have a history? Does his explanation make sense? Instead, it's we arrested him and from now on, we are not capable of making mistakes. Doesn't matter if he's just being a wanker, we want him imprisoned and fined. But when you look at the case, the guy doesn't even know how to make a bomb, wouldn't hurt a fly. Was just frustrated.. That's where we need some balance..

One possibility is that Charlie Chaplan filmed this to make it appear that someone was doing what was impossible back then. They did have phones so the idea of a communication device you carry isn't improbable in that year. Maybe he was doing this as gag and it's taken people this long to notice it..?

If I reboot my personal laptop, I'm backup in less than a minute. Hibernation isn't much quicker (and can be buggy).. So I tend to shutdown frequently because it's quicker to startup.. (Yes I have room in my swap).. If I reboot my work laptop (windows XP for a Bank), fairly new hardware, it takes almost 10 minutes to get back up. Encryption, various system checks, lots of black box background processing and attempts to contact the bank systems (without vpn up), then Ctrl-Alt-Del.. So, I would leave it up as long as I can.. however, the longer you go, the more unstable it gets.. (whatever the reason).. so I end up rebooting at least once every day. My point is blanket assumptions about user habit's can't be made from your job perspective..
