That money might be added to either the Windows or Unix camp. It might have been higher due to the initial cost of both OS's (licencing, etc), and it might have been lower, as the initial outlay may have kept companies from investing right away. Additionally, it may have been spent on HW upgrades to keep older equipment functioning. And then it's debatable if the money would have gone to HP in any of the cases.
The money would have made its way into the economy sooner or later, but where, when and th whom would be a hard guess.
Dropline installer from dropline gnome will get you a full Gnome 2 desktop w/o the need to compile anything! Farmiliar installer too.
I suggest you try it out.
You should upgrade to the latest version of Linux ported to fountain pens. I reccomend using Bic pens, as they come in 12 packs and are really easy to cluster.
I'm not too terribly worried about my Karma right now. I've got extra to burn. You want to mod me down, that's fine. I'll even post at +1 so I can take a massive Karma hit.
Yes, that is MS's goal (to have the Xbox as a media hub), but it's also their goal to control it entirely. 3rd party development is exactly what is needed to keep information free. If you want a product that doesn't judge you ala TiVo, lets you skip commercials, lets you record what you want when you want, for as long as you want, then don't trust the corporations.
You could always recase an Xbox if you don't like the look of it, want to add more storage, etc.
The fact is, the damned thing is cheap, it's easy to work with, and you don't have to learn an entirely different architecture.
Project Dreamix will turn the Microsoft Xbox into the ultimate home entertainment center. Right now we are in the alpha phase of course, but below is what we plan to complete before Beta release: -
* PVR Features (Scheduled recording, fast forward, rewind, pause Live TV)
* Video Playback (Based on Linux MPlayer - all popular file formats)
* Audio/Music Playback (Based on Linux MPlayer - all popular file formats)
* Image Viewer (Slideshow + Photo album)
* Setup Menu (All configuration will be done with the Xbox controller and/or DVD Remote with the use of a graphical keypad)
Although Dreamix will be based on Debian Xbox-Linux, all necessary libraries will be included in the distribution of the CD image and will auto-excecute upon being inserted into the Xbox DVD drive. This will allow for a friendly install by the average user.
Note: There will be a need to purchase a hardware add-on for video input since the Xbox gaming console does not currently have video inputs etc.
Why Dreamix?
"For a very long time, I had been developing software called VWare, 2 years ago the project was going well but found myself losing interest, and not having enough time. Now with the Xbox supplying the hardware power needed to take my old VWare project into a new realm, the Dreamix team had the idea, why not Personal Video Recording on Xbox? Ill be honest, I can not stand Tivos, ReplayTVs,Dish Network, DirecTV TV guide systems, menus and what not. I am a very picky person who wants my entertainment and system to give me a feel of power, worth my money. I have spent too many years watching the industry do things wrong and only 'hoping' more would be added. They are slowly getting there but I am personally tired of waiting and the impatient person I am, I am going to do it myself." - Lenn0x
I've gone to a lot of concerts on small, cramped bars, paid my cash and had a great time. That's how I support music, that's how these guys all started (minus the formula boy bands, etc), and that's why I'd rather pay the artist than the label.
And did you ever notice that Sony has a record label, sells CD Burners, sells blank CD's, and still bitches that too many people are making their own pirate cd's?
I personally have never downloaded a full cd. Why? 2 out of 14 tracks are good, the rest are just filler.
A new strain of the flu, a new federal defecit, and a new rash of conspiracy theories is about all they're going to find up there. Oh, and a green babe for Shatner...
I've sent bills to spammers before. I've even, on a couple of occasions, been paid. Most of the bills were for less than the postage I sent them for. I got a checque for 11 cents from one company, plus a couple of snail mails saying that they won't cut a cheque for less than $20.
One company even sent a registered letter refuting the charges... on a $0.09 access/processing charge!
Some of these guys aren't the brightest (but hey I'm buying stamps too). I'm down $4.65 in postage, but it's a cheap form of entertainment.
Warranty purposes. So you can't pass off your old tires as new ones. Not like they pro-rate them until they're worthless anyways.
Smoke home-grown and give an American kid a mercedes and a machine gun!
Yeah, the damned 20 seconds before you post f'd me.
Oh well, redundant by 10 seconds or so.
Obligitory VA Linux comment?
Trolls, I'm ashamed!
How can I come to work drunk anymore? I just perfected driving here, now I have to retrain on my PDA? Jeeze, sometimes technology is a bad thing.

That all depends on access times.
You could just use it for storage of the movie, and copy it to your HDD, then play it from there, but that all remains to be seen.
Actually, it's just a ploy to get your long distance bill higher on misdials.

Amsterdam Vallon, are you the one responsible for arguably the best first post ever?

An eye for an eye....
I would gladly have my net connection taxed to get in on that plan!
Yes, she's trying to screw us, but we're running out of orifaces to take it in...
When does the hurting stop?

And Texas Instrument Calculators! NASA's adoption of the TI's for the spacesuits were marketing not even money could buy.
Still have my TI-36x!
Yeah, but I'd just be happy he wasn't on the earth anymore.

Are they going to fake that landing as well?
Great, scenes cut out of Red Planet...
