I don't like the new MS adds on that basis alone -- no shit the guy in the commercial is a stereotype. Did anyone ever believe any differently? He's supposed to be a stereotype, and so is the Mac guy. That's why there are just the two of them representing a large number of people. Pointing out that the PC guy is a stereotype is like pointing out that Homer Simpson is a stereotype -- it's besides the point.

Why can't mobile phones (& GPRS modem software for that matter) have the ability to pre-warn you how much the call is going to cost per minute before you press the dial button?

Because the carriers wouldn't want that feature and might not allow such a phone to work on their network. It would cost them money to develop a system that would benefit their customers at the cost of their own profits (or at least so they'd think), and since they are more like monopolies than, say, ISPs, there is no pressure to compete with alternative systems. Just look at the big deal it was for Apple to develop a new interface for voice mail. Now imagine you aren't the maker of the most popular portable digital music player on the planet and asking the telecos to help you out with some neat new features.

I hope WiFi replaces cellular networks for densely populated areas, and hopefully then the carriers will end up more like ISPs.

Because, overall, Dell is about saving money, so this will probably affect their quality control more than Apple. Apple may use 3rd party manufacturers in China, but they still have some influence over the quality control. Some of their innovation seems to be getting the most out of these manufactures, even if it costs a bit more.

Ever consider that perhaps Foxconn don't sell their lower-end products to Apple? Component manufacturers can vary quite a lot depending on who they're selling to, from what I've gathered. After all, the main things that I've heard of failing on iPods are batteries and HDDs, neither which Foxconn make.

They want to know that the next version of Windows won't be another Vista, or that Vista is going to get fixed. The ad does nothing to reassure anyone of that.
