I want an easy to use programming framework integrated with the IDE. See MFC, ATL, WTL. I want linux to be faster than Windows XP on my PII 400Mhz. I want a community of code like CodeGuru and CodeProject.
So, just like other policies, how much will it cost? $100? $1 million? It's kind of point less to talk about the $10 million coverage when you don't know how much it will cost...
You have no clue how capitalism and basic economics work.
By your example, we shouldn't have multibillion drug companies because if those company didn't exist, then those money will go toward some "worthy cost". Then we shouldn't have the CIA because that money can be used for something better. And as for "grass roots" level information? How well did that work in the wake of Katrina? Kasmir earth quake? No amount of "grass roots" information is going to help you, because action is what is required, not mere information. Action requires man power, equipment, knowledge. All of that requires a high density of money to create. That is why we live in a society of Universities, Government and corporation.
What Bill does with his money is greater then the distributed good. It is just an example of an entity w/ a large amount of money doing something that is not possible by individuals.
If I don't buy one of these subscriptions, my software doesn't get bug fixes, security updates, which means it is unfit for further use. Essentially it means I have to stop using the software.
Heya, are you willing to beta test a tablet pc application for me? The program is called FrontMotion Login Tablet PC edition, and currently a new version is in development. It enables you to login with a hand written signature. If you are interested, email me at eric@frontmotion.com. Thanks!
They want corporate to use it, but I will say it again. Item (2) is the primary reason firefox isn't being used by normal users and corporations. Every.x version requires a new profile (otherwise FF doesn't run). Extensions get broken, etc. Most normal sofware will either include migration, or use a major release number.
I know this is a problem because I author a Mozilla Firefox MSI
Support. We are talking about any kind of software, hardware, configuration, etc.
For example, RedHat 7.3 released in 2002, I can't get Promise drivers for the FastTrak SX4100 (released recently) on it. At the same time, I can't get RedHat EL4 drivers for the SuperTrak SX6000 (released in 2002?). It is frustrating.
Another example is gtkglarea. It was pretty popular until it got 'deprecated' for whatever reason. Where is the backward compatibility? Now there's no upgrade path for software which uses it.
Also, anyone notice that there is a tendency not to have backwards compatibility for anything? At least have a wrapper ABI, migration tool, something.
Let me rephrase the poster...;-)
Hello Slashdot,
I want to start a mobile phone company with no money down. I am very poor but I want to provide GSM, voice mail, fax, voip, free calls, etc. Can you people help me?
I run Redhat Linux on a few computers and I have grown to depend on them more than I should like. I am at the mercy of their proprietary base configuration and the available rpm out there. Just the other day I tried to install a 5 year old open source software and it didn't compile because one of the library has been deprecated. The application is fsv and it uses GTK+ and OpenGL and it no longer compiles, when it did on a previous redhat version. if a simple program that used standard open source technology loses support that easily, why as a developer do I want to write software for Linux?
I looked at the xSeries prices on IBM.com, and here is my recommendation for 'Linux Tuning'.;)
1) Don't buy the book and save your $55. 2) Configure the server you want on ibm.com. Go to dell.com and configure a similar server, note the amount saved on dell.com 3) buy a dell server and use your extra money from 1) and 2) to get the cpu upgrade and the free double ram. 4) Presto! Instant Linux Tuning! It even works with Windows at no extra charge!
No one is forcing you to use anything. OSS is about freedom of choice and if you happen to use Linux or OSX, you have a choice to use emulation software. Or choose to use Windows, but stop complaining. If you really think they must have a better system, I challenge you to start a company without tax payer money and write a better piece of software and sell it to the government.
Thinking about how I use Linux/Windows, that's not surprising. Why? When I have a problem on Linux, it means the machine is down. So I use the Windows machine to browse troubleshooting websites.
I don't think it's odd that they are de-emphasizing the Mozilla brand. AOL is now resurrecting the Netscape brand, I have already gotten a few CD's from AOL touting the 'Netscape Internet Service' That said, it is in their interest to downplay the Mozilla brand, but still keep Gecko development going.
Wine is mentioned only in passing, in a section entitled "What to do if all else fails," and it is called a "temporary workaround" to get an application running on the Linux client.
Ouch, so basically, 'all else' did fail. Are there any other fortune 500 company besides novell that is also trying? How about a list of them that succeeded? May be someone should do interviews to see what works and what doesn't....
They also sell Precision Workstation w/ the option of having Redhat Workstation preinstalled.

Are you sure you don't have a compiler installed? What video card are you using?
Not only do those people look like zealots, I believe you are one of them too. Either you are new here or you are a zealot. Because...
.NET on linux .NET on linux .NET on linux
.NET?
You can't run
You can't run ASP.NET on linux
There's not an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for
There's no commercial support for
So I am betting you want to bash Novell too because they support

isn't that what the open source business model is already doing? See Redhat subscription , MySQL subscription , SuSe Linux Enterprise 9 subscription
If I don't buy one of these subscriptions, my software doesn't get bug fixes, security updates, which means it is unfit for further use. Essentially it means I have to stop using the software.
Do you mean Lynx?

I got hold of the course syllabus and I am posting it here.
Chapter 1. RTFM.
That is all.

Using that is so 2002, I use the power button. And yes, Windows does shutdown correctly when I do that.

Actually, they do both. From Wikipedia

Let me blatantly plug my own stuff. Get your Firefox MSI (AD deployeable!) here! http://www.frontmotion.com/Firefox/index.htm They are waayyy behind.
You know the PSP launch is a failure when you need year old news to fill the Slashdot front page.

Did you know that there are 37 stories between the two dup? I wonder if there's a story with an even smaller gap. :)
