    Commercial GPL is something like the NPL/MPL licenese that let Netscape keep some code to themselves while still sharing and modifying the Mozilla codebase, I think.

    Of course, I see a clear need for LGPL as well here, since that is different than just GPL or MPL or BSD, and very useful indeed.
    LGPL is what lets me use things like libPNG or ZLib in my commercial application without giving away the unrelated source code to my entire program. LGPL is a good thing if you value PNG support in other programs that aren't going to be using GPL themselves.

I can't figure out why they always say lunix instead of linux, because it makes it look more like L(unix), but to them, I think its just like people who say M$ and microshaft or whatnot.
    These are the people, who don't work for Microsoft, but believe that C# and .NET are great, and everybody should stop programming in C++, think only IIS is a viable web server, and always brag about the latest Longhorn or VS.NET 2005 beta they have.

    I don't know. If I want to port my Win32 MFC applications to Linux, I am still going to choose GTK, because I can use that under the LGPL, and distrube a binary for Linux without giving away my source code, and I don't have to go buy some extra toolkit to do it. To use QT, I either have to buy it, or link with GPL and give away all my source code. Not going to happen. Of course, this assumes that porting a GUI application from Windows to Linux will yield an increase in sales. Since I doubt it will, I don't bother to port it. I am attempting to port to OSX, but question whether or not that will even pay for itself or not.

I seem to remember Photoshop on Macs working like that for most of the tools. Honestly I went years using Photoshop before I realized there were more options hidden there. The same menus could be found by right-clicking in the Windows version.

    I'm not using sessions or a different php.ini for command line stuff. I've tested this a lot and am easily able to reproduce it with a simple test like

    #!/usr/bin/php -q

    A lot of the time you will just see the output like:

    [1] 12345
    hello world
    hello world
    [1] + Done ./test.php

    But if you do it about 10 times, chances are you will see this output at least once:

    [1] 12345
    Content-type: text/html

    PHP Fatal error: Unable to start session mm module in Unknown on line 0
    hello world
    [1] + Exit 254 ./test.php

    The only problems I have is when two cronjobs are scheduled to run at the same time, such as an hourly one and another one that only runs at 6am. Sometimes one of the two jobs will fail with that error at 6am, but it never fails when only 1 thing tries to run at a time.

  21. Re:Memory Leaks on PHP Automated Administrivia? · · Score: 3, Interesting

    I've never run into problems with memory leaks, but PHP is still not designed to really be a shell scripting language. The biggest issue I get is "PHP Fatal error: Unable to start session mm module in Unknown on line 0" from cron jobs. Apparently you can't start two instances of PHP at the exact same time, or you get this problem. The only fix I could find was to wrap each PHP script in a SH script as so:

    #!/bin/sh
    RET=1; while [ $RET != 0 ]; do
    /usr/local/bin/some_script.php
    RET=$?; done

    very dirty, but it ensures the script is attempted to be run forever until it finally doesn't fail to start up the PHP engine. 95% of the time the scripts run fine the first time, and the rest of the time they spit out the above error once and run just fine the second time. I log all of the cron output and thats all I ever see is this PHP error now a few times a week.
