There are a lot of assumptions and a significant amount of posts that amount to "Oh, ADHD just means you are lazy or need to try harder, you don't need that ritalin crap."

Which in my personal experience, is total bullshit. I stopped taking ritalin for a few years and eventually I got in a bad situation, and sought help, got back on ritalin, and I'm piecing my life back together, and the future looks bright, but it's an uphill battle.

  3. ADHD is not as funny as you jerks think it is. on Working with ADHD? · · Score: 4, Insightful

Seriously. I have ADHD and it really sucks.

A lot of easy jokes have been made here, and frankly they all suck. I make sure not to mention to anyone that I have ADHD unless they are a good friend or need to know because the "did you take your meds?" joke isn't just tired by this point, it's painful.

I take Ritalin. It helps me a lot. It's the difference between holding down a good job and being unemployed and possibly even homeless. It really is that night and day. I am trying something new that can be taken along with Ritalin that might replace it, but in my all too real experience without Ritalin my life is a disorganized mess.

I don't really have more to add, but ADHD isn't as fun as you might think. It hurts your job prospects, it hurts your social life, and it hurts any projects you try to attempt.

On the upside, ADHD often comes with the ability to hyperfocus. I sometimes work on writing music for 8 or 9 hours at a time, completely obsessed with every minor detail, even forgetting to eat. If I could turn this on and off at the drop of a hat, I would have had a 4.0 in college. Instead I fought the ADHD like crazy and got a 3.3.

Most of you probably don't realize that ADHD has a tight association with dysthymia, a mild but chronic depression that in and of itself is self-destructive. If you're not careful the two disorders will feed off each other.

I'm 26 now. The Hyperactive part of the disorder mostly means that I'm a bit eccentric and excitable, where in the past it made me a social pariah. I've got a good therapist helping me leverage what advantages ADHD gives me and minimize the downsides. I'm glad I'm confronting my ADHD head on instead of dismissing it as a myth or an excuse for parents/teachers.

I agree that it's probably overdiagnosed, but for those of us who really have it, it sucks.

You really sound like a stick in the mud. The voice acting and art in Viewtiful Joe are perfect, they fit the kitschy style very well; I find voice acting in most video games atrocious, but I actually like it here. Henshin a Go Go, baby.

Also, the art is appealing to me, yes, but the game mechanics are solid. I've played through the demo a few more times now, and finally achieving rank V on V-combo, defense, and time was really satisfying. Strategizing to build the V-Combo as high as possible reminds me strongly of Bangai-O!, where getting 999 simultanious explosions was the real point of the game. I'm probably going to play this over and over until I can ace all of it without thinking. It's just that appealing to me.

The game I find Viewtiful Joe is most like is Stryder 2 for the PSX. It's also 2.5 D, it's also a beat em up, and it's also from Capcom. I'm a Metal Slug/Gunstar Heroes/Contra fiend, and I wouldn't compare Viewtiful Joe to any of them. Nor would I compare it directly to River City Ransom, Double Dragon, or Final Fight, so perhaps "beat 'em up" isn't strictly accurate, but the game does revolve around beating up the bad guys for high score rather than shooting anyone.

I will concede that if you don't like the hyper-stylized art of Viewtiful Joe, you probably won't like the game, but that's your loss, considering it's tremendous fun.

It seems to me that a lot of the games I find myself most into get attacked for being different.

One easy example is in fact a very popular game, but one that has endured some of the stupidest arguments in the history of video games: The Legend of Zelda: The Wind-Waker.

It's cell shaded; it frequently looks like a hand drawn cartoon. It recaptures the art direction of the classic SNES era Zelda game, seamlessly into a 3-d environment.

And it was attacked without mercy for being "kiddie".

Just yesterday I was at a Gamestop, playing through the demo of Viewtiful Joe. If you don't know, it's a 2.5-D beat 'em up, similar to Capcom's Strider 2 (for the playstation 1), except with bright colors and a unique take on the cell shading trend. It really stands out among the endless stream of tactical, deadly-serious games that are flooding the market.

And while one of the staff was really into it, the other guy working there couldn't accept that there was a helicopter flying around inside of a large cathedral, and that as Joe, I was jumping high into the air and punching said helicoptor in slow-mo to blow it up. As if the idea that a game could possibly be amusing and light-hearted was alien to him.

Viewtiful Joe is definitely my most looked forward to game of this year; I payed $10 for a Gamecube demo disc, solely for the 15 minute demo, which is really a ridiculous sum. It was worth it. I've played through this demo 5 or 6 times already and if the rest of the game lives up to this potential, it will likely be the best game of the year. (Like last year's Ikaruga).

I am a die hard Dreamcast enthusiast, and yes, most of the best games on the DC are unusual and edgy. Typing of the Dead, Rez, Samba De Amigo, Sega Bass Fishing, Bangai-O!, Shenmue, Chu Chu Rocket, Space Channel 5. Really, who knew a fishing game could actually be FUN.

In fact, the DC also hurt in the market for catering to old school gamers as well. Classic gaming styles such as 2-D fighters and top down, vertical scrolling shooters (like Mars Matrix, Giga Wing 2, and Ikaruga) just aren't as popular as they once were.

Perhaps Sega would have done better to cater to current trends instead of trying to invent their own, but I'll take innovative and intuitive gameplay over the trends of the week any day.

Special mention to the development teams at Sega, Treasure, Capcom, and Nintendo for making awesome, innovative games, at least now and then.

I'd agree. Wind Up Bird Chronicles is my favorite book, tied with David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest.

About a year ago, a friend recommendeded it to me, the first time I'd encountered Murakami other than having eyed Norwegian Wood because of it's cover design.

The first thing I noticed about Murakami was his pacing. It's a little on the slow side, but feels just right. The characters are honest and seem very real, especially his ubiquitous disaffected male leads. The story got weirder and weirder, but as the reviewer says, his hard-boiled style makes it all seem plausible, somehow.

After I finished it, I read 6 more of his books all in the next 8 months, and a couple of those twice.

The only one I found disappointing was Sputnik Sweetheart, it felt like a weaker Norwegian Wood or South of the Boarder, West of the Sun (both of which I read twice.)

As for the Philp K. Dick angle....

if you like the structural weirdness that Dick frequently employes, his habit for changing EVERYTHING you know to be true half way through a story, or the way the aforementioned make you think about stories in general, I *highly* recommend Italo Calvino and Jorges Luis-Borges.

Specifically: The Collected Short Fiction of Jorges Luis-Borges, and "If on a winter's night a stranger" by Calvino.

I've clocked in literally hundreds of hours on the series, and even got Pro Skater 3 to say "Game Complete" after beating it (no cheats) with all 25 characters. I'm currently trying to beat THPS2 again, but on my dreamcast this time (different bonuses than the N64).

My Point: Tony Hawk Pro Skater convinced me that spending time with 3-D games was worthwhile.

For those who like RPGs/deep story games, the next gen consoles are perfect: Skies of Arcadia, Final Fantasy, etc... those are fun, though not my favorites.

But the thing is that there is a lot of AWFUL games out there and a lot of games that just look cool at first and have no replay value.

I am very sad to see 2D games getting more and more ignored, but when stuff like Ikaruga, Capcom vs SNK 2, and Castlevania GBA are still being made, there is at least some hope. I think some development team is going to make a mindblowing 2D game one of these days, with twice as much resolution and animation frames as anything done in the past and it will bring 2d games mainstream appeal again.
