"Unfortunately a rather large proportion of Xbox users mod their consoles and use them as cheap pcs and media players instead of playing games. No game sales = no profit for a console."
Millions of people are modding their XBOX and using them as 'cheap PCs'? No, sorry. There are people doing it, but 'rather large proportion' is... well... out of proportion.
"The US is the largest spammer in the world. Russia and China would be the largest spam relays. "
Is the title wrong? In a sense. It really kind of depends on which you think is the bigger problem: the people wanting to do it, or the countries in question allowing it?
I'm not sure what my own answer to this question is. I basically agree with you on a technical level... but I can't ignore that part of the problem is that it's being allowed. I mean, it's not like we can just block China and Russia from the internet. Pretty much defeats the purpose of it. The laws for this sort of thing have to be universal or there'll always be loopholes like this.
"Does it make it any easier to find prime numbers?"
I apologize for my naievity, but I do have a curious semi-OT question: What does knowing all the prime numbers have to do with crypto? Is there a layman explanation?
"It's called irony, but in some circles it is known simply as humor."
It stopped being humor after the 30th time it's been stated. Now it's just plain zealousy. I suspect that's why AnonV suggested being more polite about it.
"Huh? If everything is running so smoothly why do you have to reinstall it every 6 months?"
The fundamental back breaking flaw in Windows is the registry. Every few months, it gets so bloated that even simple tasks take a long time to get through. Why? Because Windows has to scan through it, find the data it wwants, and load it in. It eventually becomes such a tangled mess you MUST start over with it.
Even the most dedicated MS Fan boy will acknowledge that.
"i should i have clarified for the peanuts gallery that "they" are monopolistic organizations that conspire to limit choice, forcing people to use their overpriced (and in this case, unstable) products."
I agree, you should spend more time making yourself clear. Now I know my statement was true.
As for 'forcing people', sorry bub, the market forced that. Microsoft tried (is trying?) to help it along, no denying that, but the the simple fact of the matter is that Microsoft could not possibly create a monopoly without a MASSIVE amount of people saying "we want this." It's funny what you'll observe when you push aside the "I hate the popular company to hate" feelings and just LOOK at what happened.
"does that make you feel better?"
Yes it does, thank you.:)
"better grab a kleenex and wipe that snot out of your nose."
I've heard a lot of impressive insults on Slashdot. That wasn't one of them. Heh. I'm sorry I made an obseration about how you are coming across. I should have used my telepathy to read what you didn't say.
"Honestly, who at Microsoft thought this was a good idea: "Start / Settings / Control Panel / Add/Remove Hardware / Next / Uninstall/Unplug a device / Next / Unplug/Eject a device / Next / Select device / Next"...when the Apple engineers tell you: "Unplug the device from your Macintosh."
That's funny, when I eject a device, a little icon appears on my system tray. Double click it, pick the one you want to turn off, and a message tells you it's ready to go. How would anybody know that? If you unplug something without doing this, you get a nice little message explaining it to you, and it shows you what to do.
I doubt it's as nice as what Apple has, but it's nowhere near as dramatic as you're making it out top be.
"So, again tell me how useful their software is when I lose time and money when their apps bomb!"
If it's bombing for you, don't use it. What do you want me to tell you? If I had the same experience, I wouldn't use it either. Fortunately for me, though, I haven't had that sort of trouble.
"I can't use my intuition to determine this because there IS no presence."
Not true. You'd be surprised how hard it is to be convincing about anything on-line. I'll never forget when this guy was bugging me for ops. He tried to lure a favor from me by pretending to be female. "I have big hooters!" Yeah, that's exactly how women talk.
"I don't believe in on-line presence."
Again, I think you'd be surprised. Heck, look at Slashdot. We've got some real characters here. Go check out the forums. People very much settle on identity.
Maybe I'm just a titch biased. I owe my having a girlfriend and a job to having an on-line presence. I met my gf of the last 3 years via an IRC get-together. My prescence on the CGTalk.com forums got me noticed. A new studio went up and they needed another artist. Noboody's disappointed yet.
"Just an honest question here, but why is cable acceptable and broadcast not?"
I think the basic difference is that you have to pay to have cable installed. If the content is objectionable, you can stop paying and halt the service. You can't hault broadcast TV.
"The bottom line is, the sooner we can de-indoctrinate (is that a word?) people from Microsoft products, and in greater amounts, the sooner they will go away."
Oh brother. So your motivation is "destroy Microsoft"? You just hate them, so be gone with them? +5 Insightful?
Look, I'm not exactly in love with Microsoft here, but the reason that they're in this monopoly in the first place is they have made a VERY useful app. Spare me the "Oh they made a monopoly out of nothing and then put a gun to millions of people's heads" theories, as long as people are complaining that the alternatives are missing features then the Microsoft 'doctrine' is going to remain quite strong.
It's cool that somebody took a leap and started using Open Office, but man, don't turn this into a "ding dong MS is dead" pitchfork party.
" You don't want to admit it because it interferes with your notion that somehow speech is free."
Huh?
"So you rationalize your desire to stifle free speech when it offends by saying "Well, bare breasts are not free speech"."
I never expressed desire to stifle free speech. She wasn't even making a statement with her breasts. Slightly different from what happend ith Ms. Godiva.
"When somebody burns the flag, the supreme court has ruled this is protected political speech."
The key difference here was that a statement was being made with the burning of the flag.
"SO again, I ask, how is this not free speech? It is artistic expression, which is by definition free speech."
"why bussards? "
Star Trek fans. "Bussard ramscoops" are the red things on the front of the Enterprise from Next Generation.
"Microsoft has over $56 billion in the bank and should be dominating the console market. "
That just goes to show, you can't have a monopoly without a market that agrees with you.
"In case (like me) you feel the need to find this picture, I think the one the parent poster is talking about is here"
Wanna know how classy my friends are? They referred to her breasts as 'bussards'.
I found a pic of the stealth ship, here.

"If 70% 70 percent of spam is sent from China by American spam outfits, wouldn't that make the US the biggest spammer? "
Perhaps. But the solution is still in Russia and/or China.
"And, just incidentally, anyone with access to the system can determine where and when you travel anywhere. "
Uh right. And they can't do that through your cell phone or credit card?
"Does it make it any easier to find prime numbers?"

" guess it'd be much easier to "mount" things as sync. That way you wouldn't have to use that icon, would you?"
Having to use it does suck. Anybody remember when you had to park the hd heads back in the 286 days? OUch.
"i should i have clarified for the peanuts gallery that "they" are monopolistic organizations that conspire to limit choice, forcing people to use their overpriced (and in this case, unstable) products."

"How many times do I gotta say no? Son of a bitch!"
Just so you know, I wasn't calling you a son of a bitch. It was an expression of 'arrrrgh!' Hope you didn't read that wrong.
"I can't use my intuition to determine this because there IS no presence."

"If i find the content of a broadcast tv program to be objectionable, i can watch a tape or dvd, change the channel, or turn the damn thing off."
In order to avoid the content, you have to watch the content. Therefore, you're still watching objectionable content.
" I don't need the FCC to do it for me."
The FCC is only doing it on broadcast TV. Go get cable. You can really screw the big bad mean ol gov't that way.
"Just an honest question here, but why is cable acceptable and broadcast not?"
I think the basic difference is that you have to pay to have cable installed. If the content is objectionable, you can stop paying and halt the service. You can't hault broadcast TV.
Hope that helps.
"Where the heck does "aboot" come from? I have never met anyone in Canada that pronounces "about" as "aboot"."
I have, but only in a couple of people. My guess is, in another 10 years, it'll go the way of radical.
"The bottom line is, the sooner we can de-indoctrinate (is that a word?) people from Microsoft products, and in greater amounts, the sooner they will go away."

"That's pure eliteism. Only those who can afford cable TV should have the right to free expression?"
Actually, cable is cheaper than network TV.
"First post,"
First post in the Apple area? N00b.
"Do you actually look at girls and say to yourself "I know what is underneath her clothes". Its disturbing that you even think that way. Spooky."

Artistic expression? Are you serious?
