  1. Re:Moderation - Modbombers are worse than pedos on Is Your Computer a Fire Hazard Waiting to Happen? · · Score: 2

You know what sucks? How come there isn't a thread specifically for challenging moderation?

I had a chance to meta-moderate this post, and I said the 'troll' (or was it flamebait?) moderation was unfair. And I will continue to mark these types of things unfair as long as Slashdot doesn't have a forum for griping about unfair moderations.

Mod-bombing does happen. I got hit by it in April. Here's some proof:

    http://www.nanogator.com/slashdot.jpg

I wouldn't go as far as to liken Slashdot to Nazis like the parent poster did, but I do think it's awful that there isn't a forum to discuss this. The worst part is that we can't bring it up in the thread that it happens in. I challenged a posting I made once and it got modded down as 'off-topic'.

    So wtf?

I have a feeling this post is going to get modded down because I'm not talking about my computer as a fire hazard. Oh well, at least I've expressed myself.

I really wish that moderators would be careful about who they mod down. We've all seen too many instances of people getting modded down because their opinion's different from your own. I'll never forget getting modded down because I said Flash was a cool product. All the hatred against Flash anims cost me karma even though I was specifically talking about it from the development point of view. *eyeroll*

I think the simplest way to say it is that the 'default way of using a product' should be intuitive. If there are more advanced stuff, in most cases it's okay to hide that in the manual.

For example: The VCR. Nobody can program their VCR (unless REALLY interested), but they can watch their movies just fine. I wouldn't classify VCR's as difficult products to use, but when it comes to 'time shifting' they can be a nuisance.

VCR's are an interesting product because the way to play them has been established over the last 20 years. Every VCR, in terms of playing movies, is exactly identical to others. (Too bad they don't place the remote buttons in the same place on each model of VCR...) However, the method for programming one varies widely. You'd think that by now they'd have settled on a standard, but that really hasn't happened. On Screen Displays have helped some, but they're still a little weird.

Funny, though, they're still very popular.

Jon Benet Ramsey immediately pops into mind. The girl was dead. They had her body. At that point, they didn't even know who to point the finger to. Heck, they still don't. Yet that girl's face was plastered all over the screen daily for a looooooooong time. That was a case where public insight had little to no value.

She was just a cute little girl with a memorable face, and everybody's heart went out to her. That actually got more media attention than Elian Gonzales did. In that case, the future of a 6 year old boy was at stake.

Hmmm Interesting point. The problem with what you're saying is that people are justifiably concerned. He was acquitted, not found innocent. IIRC, they couldn't prove or disprove he did it. In which case, the public has a right to know what the details are.

What if he remarries? At least now, the new wife would know about the accusations made about him. If it had gone quietly like you suggest, he could hide it from her. That'd be bad news if she ended up dead.

I have a Geforce 4 MX card. It's $150 and works great. :) (tho not as powerful as the Ti series...)

Here is the Best Buy ad.

I can personally recomend the card if you need a dual monitor setup with decent 3D accelleration. I play Quake 3 just fine, plus it works great with LW. Plus, it has two VGA connectors instead of a VGA and a DVI connector. (This is a plus for me, but it may be a turnoff for LCD users...)$150 was very reasonable.

It is an MX version and has only 64 meg of RAM, so I'm not sure a hardcore gamer would go for it. But for $150 plus really good dual monitor support, who can complain?

The driver has some neat things for controlling the dual displays, like it adds an extra maximize button that 'maximizes to display' instead of acros both screens. It's none too shabby! :)

"But complaining about being modded down at slashdot is really, really, pointless. I mean, i don't post anything insightful or interesting, yet i've got a bonus. /. moderation is completely random"

You have no fucking idea why I put that sig up. I was being personally attacked. What happened was during that thread, a moderator went through some of my previous posts and modded them 'overrated'. Since I have no clue who that person is, I just put that sig up so I could take a poke at him. I think it worked because more of my stuff got modded down. Eventually I got sick of losing karma over it, so I moved on to the AC that kept bothering me. Hell, I still have messages from him coming in. I don't care about being modded down, but I do hate when people hold grudges against me for days at a time. That topic happened two days ago and as of last night I was still getting comments on it on what a yuppie jerk I am. It's childish. My only defense against a shitty moderator is... well I don't really have any. I had to be creative. It's the same thing with AI's. (Anonymous Idiots)

As for quoting myself: I'm doing it because people are bugging me about it, and it's funny to read the dumb-ass replies. People seem to get reaaaaally upset over it, and it's stupid. When I get bored with it, I'll take it down. (Or maybe I will when somebody asks me nicely.)

The original reason I did that had nothing to do with ego or whatever, it had to do with people not realizing that it was my sig and not part of my post. There was a thread that got out of control (like that one you know about) where everybody used a metaphor to try to illustrate that I'm a selfish idiot. So I put in my sig "dont use a stupid metaphor, it means you dont get what i said." A couple of people responded, not realizing it was a sig vs. part of the post. So I quoted my self out of silliness. And nobody said anything, so I let it go. It got popular last week. Heh.

I would have taken it down like a week ago if I wasn't still getting a 'youre a tool' response here and there. It's funny watching people try to be insulting. I did have one guy make a funny response, the rest were about the quality of Bob Saget insult.

As for 'attacking or not attacking my sig': Just shut up! I don't CARE what you think! Mainly, because the whole thing about my sig is really a private affair. You wouldn't be seeing it now had Slashdot given me a way to know who modded me for what. At least then I could report it to somebody and get this moderator to leave me alone.

"And the comment about someone being an AC, when you yourself posted as an AC, was pure gold. (Unless that wasn't you, in that case i will apologize.)" -- Heh I did that on purpose. It was one of those "heh, that'd be funny" moments. :) The joke there is that when somebody responds to it, I won't get a message, and I'll never see it.
