The Dreamcast was not a Microsoft system. Nor did it die to being a bad system. No Microsoft blame to be had here. You can't even tell which games used CE.
" Show me a site that doesn't work without IE, and then prove why you need to go to it. "
Heh. I don't need to, you made my point for me.
First you overtightened the definition of 'need' so that I cannot possibly rebuttal. I didn't even use the word 'need'! Heh, ass. (This is the sign of somebody desperate to win, btw.) Like anybody here, including yourself, has a net connection because their life depends on it.
Second, you've acknowledged that it CAN be too inconvenient to use an alternative. Blammo, shot yourself in the foot there, buddy.
And, finally a bit of satire: "Your convenience is different than your wants and needs..." Okay then, you should all be using IE because, as you said, there are sites your life needs to sustain itself and IE's the best supported! You're only using FireFox for convenience!!!!
Heh. Thanks for the chuckle and for forgetting to hit the post anonymously button.;)
"No you don't. The pressure on women to be skinny is huge, but it doesn't usually come from men. Yep - there are bastards who'll take the piss out a woman for being overweight, but the majority of men prefer a girl who has a little padding."
Note to both the women that read this site: This is true. Why? Because we're attracted to curves. Guys find attraction in more subtle ways than stereotypes portray.
While I'm more or less on the topic: Ladies, porn doesn't actually desensitize a guy's tastes to exclude you. I'm not cracking jokes here, I'm dead serious. Guys do not have the same sexual desires as women. Even though this is well documented (especially on TV shows BOTH genders watch), assumptions are made on both sides that often do not come to pass. As a result, one finds the other to be crazy. For example: A guy will think a woman would actually be interested in seeing naked photos of himself, whereas a woman will think that she should be so sexually satisfying that he wouldn't feel the need to look at porn. The result? Well, often it's quite amusing to a third party. Suddenly, all men are dogs and all women are bitches.
" Getting a stranglehold on the web and forcing people to use proprietary applications to exchange information is like adding new words and conventions to a language and charging people to use them."
I don't blame ya. I'd prefer it if everything was open and free, too. But, at the end of the day, a LOT of people out there only care if it works or not. That may be sad or whatever, but it cannot reasonably be expected that everybody be an expert on everything. For example: I have reasons to not want you to not play games that used 3D Studio MAX. Would you really give a flying fuck?
(Note: I don't really have reasons to not use 3DS Max in a game, but it's not something that's totally unrealistic with them or any other 3d software company.)
"What I think it be worth to do would be to send a message to Nikon..."
I hear ya, man. I think expressing to Nikon is a good thing. The only caution I would make is that, for the sake of fairness, it should be limited to customers or potential customers. Bear in mind, though, I'm thinking of a far bigger picture than just Nikon. (For all I know, there are quite a few here, so maybe that point is moot.) I'm worried about needless collateral damage. Anyway, that wasn't your intent so really I'm babbling for no particularly good reason.
"I don't think the submission reviewer even thought about it."
Probably right. I'd be surprised to find, though, that a bunch of story submissions didn't include that sort of thing.
Not sure if ya know this or not, but you can buy seasons 1-6 on DVD at Best Buy. Just 10 minutes ago I was watching Gunmen of the Apocolypse. The extras aren't bad either, quite a few deleted scenes etc!
Or I simply go to different sites than you do. Frankly, I don't give a flying fuck what YOUR experience is. I know when I can't visit certain sites or do certain things. What happens to you is completely irrelevent.
"The only reason I use Firefox and not IE is due to middle-clicking for tabbed browsing. Once MS adds that into IE, I'm going back. All of my video plug-ins work instantly with IE, but not without some tweaking for Firefox. I already switched from Thunderbird to Outlook 2003, so I'm excited to see what bells & whistles MS can put in IE7."
I'm a little irritated at the overrated mods slapped onto this post. (if you think he's misguided, hit the reply button instead, folks!)
He has a point. Though FireFox is getting better and better, IE still is still the best supported out there. Sometimes I have to use IE from time to time due to lack of support for the browser I'm using. Admittedly, MS would have to do a hell of a lot of work for me to use IE7 exlusively, but I can certainly understand this guy's point of view.
"Of course, people are sheep anyway so why would they pay attention?"
I personally think this is really shitty of Nikon. I also take digital pictures and use Photoshop. It'd be really obnoxious of me to go tell my mom to not buy a Nikon camera to serve my own purposes.
I wouldn't mind, but EVERY company has done something that should be punished. What if I told you that you're a sheep because you're using FireFox even though one of the developers of it downloaded kiddie porn?
"Well, if nobody should care, I guess i'd get a -1 Troll. Did I?"
Whoop-de-fuck. These are the same people who'd mod you up for saying you hate Enterprise. Not only were mod points used for off-topic rantings, but the attention drawn to Roland has given Slashdot a reason to keep him. Or have you not noticed that little banner getting served on Slashdot's pages?
"Would putting better graphics on the Titanic's deckchairs have kept anyone on board?"
Uh.. what on Earth makes you think that's the only thing they're working on? Given all the black eyes Microsoft has taken in the last couple of years, do you really think proper PNG support was their big to-do item with everything else as "would be nice"?
"Even if IE implements everything that the basic Firefox installation has and then some, they still won't have the strong community of extension developers that Mozilla does..."
I'd find this insightful if not for the various things Google etc did for IE.
"(a) It doesn't matter *who* wants the features. What matters is that they aren't there."
I don't mind new features, provided they're optional. However, RSS doesn't SUCK for lack of them. RSS does it's job. It provides a summary of NEWS, not information archives. Imagine being forced to download a bunch of information YOU DON'T WANT just because you want to get updates from the site. Optional? Fine. Whatever.
"With email you have your browser auto-enter you mail-address (if your browser has that feature) and click submit."
Or.. leave RSS like it is because it's more convenient. When you go to a site that has email services, use that.
"But why am I even replying to you?"
Because I made a good point. The article should be called "Why RSS isn't suitable for me".
"When it was slashdotted with a thousand people registering to get the kit, they might get a clue."
It would be a bad idea for Slashdot to promote itself as a weapon. Slashdot would be seen as a gang of punks, not as a statistical sample of the victim's customer base.
"I don't want to duplicate the article, so here's the link."
The article in that link is bullshit.
a.) It's saying that RSS sucks because the author in particular isn't getting everything he wants. Everybody else in the planet is left out.
b.) An.RSS feed need only be put on the server. The web site wouldn't need to log in to a USENET server and post its news.
c.) Email is only a good solution IF you have a seperate account you can use with it and IF you really feel like registerring with sites to get updates, as opposed to clicking the little RSS button that shows up when you browse to a site.
"How many people, like myself, found out about this story because of Slashdot's RSS feed?"
I have a little app called side-bar that shows me stuff throughout the day. It frequently downloads RSS feeds and comics and displays them. I don't imagine it'll be the biggest hit ever, but it's kinda nice to glance over and see new headlines etc. That's the nice thing about RSS, it's a standard so I can keep adding stuff to it.
If it's interesting, who gives a flying fuck?
"Oh, no, this wasn't reported by a dis-interested 3rd party. I'm gonna bitch about it."
"A company can only have one flagship product in a market space - and the PSP is definitely it for Sony."
Uh, no, that'd still be the Playstation 2 by a long shot.
Only time will tell, but right now, the PSP's not Sony's main source of income. The PS2 still has a shitload of game revenue coming in.
The Dreamcast was not a Microsoft system. Nor did it die to being a bad system. No Microsoft blame to be had here. You can't even tell which games used CE.
"Uh, yes, I'd like to return this unit."
"Why?"
"Because somebody sat on it!"
"Oooh, pictures of the Xbox! Details on the PS3!"
Uh, yeah, those would be considered news.
" Show me a site that doesn't work without IE, and then prove why you need to go to it. "

Heh. Despite what I said about MS getting beat up over it's buggy product, I'm an MS astro-turfer.
Idiot, heh. Didn't even look at my posting history!

There should be an ammendment to Godwin's Law for people who resort to accusing others of working for the bad guy.
Though I don't believe it's "Goodbye FireFox", you cannot honestly say to me that IE7 doesn't have the potential to disrupt FF's market share.
