If people finally notice, something will be done about it. They'll change the laws. This is the corporate states of america after all. As for other countries...well the US will just bully them into submission one way or another.
Although I do believe that on the whole the clinton team did a better job than the bush team, I do want to nit-pick a little here. Remember Afghanistan?
feel free to mod me to hell if I'm an idiot and that was Bush.
and I state again...I am -not- a bush fan or a republican fan in general either. I'm a fan of human rights, which is kind of at odds with major portions of the republican platform.
Actually, most "surge protector" type power-strips have a circuit-breaker built in, rated in most cases for far -less- than the circuit the outlet is on. Case in point, I tripped the breaker in mine by plugging a vacuum cleaner into it, but if I plugged it into another outlet on the same circuit, it didn't trip the main breaker. Note that this breaker is resettable, and isn't the "surge protection" part, which is essentially a fast-burn fuse.
Especially in the current development tree, amaroK goes far beyond iTunes. First off, it is far faster on comparable hardware (yeah I admit that is because the windows port of iTunes is TERRIBLE), second, while it has a collection, it is playlist-centric. This may sound like nit-picking but if you use it you will see the difference. Third, it is fully integrated with audioscrobbler, musicbrainz, etc. Fourth, it has built-in lyric and wikipedia fetching. Fifth, (yeah I should have used a bulleted list), it has support for storing its collection in a "real" database (My/PostgreSQL). If you try it though, be sure to get xine installed and configured right, b/c all the other engines just aren't as good. About the only thing it is missing is support in its "mobile device" tab for more than just the ipod kioslave.
I feel my comment was misunderstood. In truth I am also in favor of investigating why each and every turtle is there. I am just saying that at this point we don't have clear answers to some of the "why"s, and...unless some major breakthrough in logic occurs, we will ALWAYS have another "why" to answer. That's all.
Interestingly enough, the answer to these sorts of questions (not 100% sure this is one but if not it quickly becomes one), is "because." Either it is simply because the math works out that way (and it is true of the real world), or if you happen to be a theist / etc., its "because god said so."
ok, I, as a woman, am getting TOTALLY sick of this whole idea that women must want different games than men. Admittedly the "eye candy" in many games isn't for me...but that's b/c I like a different shape of woman than most of reality. Thats beside the point though, I mean if you are really worried about the sexual appeal, just throw a few hunky guys in for the straight girls, and the scantily clad women are fine for those of us who like the "fairer sex". Anyway, my point is, women like the same kinds of games as men, and really the only reason that they don't necissarily admit it is they are told its "unladylike" to admit it. I mean..seriously..assuming you are a "normal" person...wouldn't you think its a bit strange from what you have been taught if a woman said she loved to blow things up in [insert FPS here]. Of course, the point is, its perfectly normal for her to love huge explosions as much as you do, as well as gore and dismemberment. Really, seriously, the only thing holding women back is the thought that women need a different kind of game to begin with.
I just want to comment...I know this is a bit off-topic, but honestly, the world really needs more people who feel like you do to make themselves heard. Many many people are not against doing a bit to help others when they can afford it, and if it were more well accepted outside of the "charity" idea, specifically if it was actually normal to just offer whatever you can whenever you can, the whole world would be a hell of a lot nicer right about now.
I guess I'm strange, but I like BOTH stargate series (and -hated- the stargate movie). Of course I also -like- TNG & DS9, and -most- of B5, and -dislike- the original trek series, and of course dislike enterprise. I also really doubt I'd like firefly as I really -don't- like westerns, never did. Not once. Didn't like any of the trek episodes where they insisted on using time travel / holodeck / etc. (depending on series) to create westerns. As for the Earthsea series, I've never read the books, heard they were better, and think the series was okay but a bit flat, took too long in exposition for things that should have been shown right away and on the converse didn't spend enough time on things, for example, -why- only like 10 minutes at the school? What about all the character development the main character should have had during that time?!
I really hope Second Life is still around when I get a chance to get the $10 to get a free membership + the graphics card I need to "play" it (read:join in)...its things like this I read about many years ago and really really hoped would eventually materialize. What we have here is nothing less than the beginnings of "cyberspace" as the cyberpunk novelists once thought of it. Especially given that there are nearly-anything-goes adult realms of Second Life. Now, I figure SL won't be the only game in town for long once the idea finally catches on, but somehow I actually have this crazy notion (maybe its just a pipe dream) that the other similar virtual worlds will find some way to interact, at least to have trade (which is often profitable to all parties) if not to try to draw subscribers from one to another.
Actually, gentoo happens to have the ability to do this too (basically)..it only has two "milestones" (boot & default) by default, but services can depend on other services, either requiring them to have started before they do, or even requiring to start before they do.
I realize this is a "me too" post, however, I want to add that I have to agree with this. The notion of a one man one woman relationship is no more or less natural than any other kind of sexual relationship between consenting adults. The only thing that -really- gets in the way of alternative relationships is the reaction of society as a whole, and of course the fact that many relationships fail -anyway- due to incompatibility, lack of communication, lack of trust, etc.
Just wanted to chime in on the whole freetype thing...check to see what sort of hinting it is using along with everything else, its possible ubuntu uses a different default hinting than debian-sid. I honestly haven't taken a close enough look to be sure (and I don't run both repos side-by-side as I'm worried about the very problem this article is about, though to be honest your experience suggests that maybe I should try it. do you have any advice?).
I've been a fan of debian pretty much since I tried it (started with slackware so I started with a decent understanding of linux). Right now I have vanilla debian sid on a server and (k)ubuntu hoary (though I'll be switching up when they announce the new version, wish they did a 'sid' like debian does) on my "desktop" box.
The only trouble with novels (and I watch very little TV and would love to read more) is that for someone like me who can go through an average sized to large novel in one to two days, this quickly becomes an expensive proposition, especially when you aren't the sort of person who tends to re-read books (or re-watch movies, etc.). About the only books I've ever re-read are books with some sort of reference quality to them...maybe I'm strange, but I just don't get the same enjoyment out of a story once I've already experienced it once. The rare exception comes when its something I haven't read in a long time, or, especially in the case of a movie, something that's really funny / quotable (and thus fun w/ friends).
actually, while there are a lot of benefits to superstrong/superthin cables/conductors, unfortunately parallel data transfer isn't one of them. Thanks to the inductive properties of electromagnetic force, parallel data transfer will eventually die as we move to faster and faster communication. The faster the clock cycle/higher the frequency, the smaller the wavelength & thus the easier it is to have induction in neighboring cables. This is why, for example, Serial ATA is able to move data more quickly more easily than traditional Parallel ATA, and why PCI-E (I think its called) is a serial system rather than parallel (and why ethernet, firewire, etc. are all serial). One exception is when you get into optical fibres where you can't have inductive losses from one fibre to the next, in which case, so far, parallel data transfer is still feasible and used widely (fibre is almost always arranged in bundles).
bleh, remind me to avoid london then...sick and tired of the skinny craze...all of the girls I see have no curves, they dieted all their femininity away!
I think the solution you are proposing is a decent one, the only addition I can think of that I would suggest be made is perhaps using md5, sha1 or some other "secure" hash along with the GUID to define the applet, to help protect against various sorts of spoofing.
So far most of the comments seem to be of the sort of "they got what they deserved!"
I simply cannot see how this is unethical. Harvard Business School was artificially forcing the students to wait to find out if they had been accepted, even though they had already made their decisions (why else would the letters be posted?).
I feel that the party that acted unethically in this case is the business school, not the students. It seems it is a similar sort of unethical behaviour to creating artificial scarcity in a marketplace.
In a way you're rather correct, though its more that having two cores would keep the system under most conditions from blocking on typical operations, and leave it free to "instantly" respond to user input. Admittedly that is a generalization, and during CPU-bound actiivty it isn't true, but for the average desktop user it will make a fairly obvious difference.
Actually, as it is most likely DRAM not SRAM, it is actively using power every refresh cycle. DRAM is essentially capacitively stored rather than stored through transistors, which uses far more power because the value in each cell has to be refreshed every few ns/ms/whatever, so unless the video board has special power management it is using power.
Unless I am mistaken, you need to replace a few ms dlls with the new code, and they are considered 'system' dlls so it would require bypassing the protection on XP at least. I don't remember them off the top of my head, but I think one is shdocvw.dll, and I am sure there are others, but if you can replicate the functionality of all of these you should be able to replace them, but unfortunately it would likely still break things due to ActiveX not being able to run under your engine.

Heh, the lack of clothing doesn't bother me...I mean...I don't tend to wear much myself when I can get away with it...but yeah I know what you mean.
I feel my comment was misunderstood. In truth I am also in favor of investigating why each and every turtle is there. Like Used. Slightly Shotgunned.
Am I the only geek reading this who thought that?
It seems everyone else already knew about the vine that ate the south, yet here I am thinking this has something to do with hardware autodetection.

Just remember, whatever you do, stay away from that nasty dimensional science!
