I'm not sure I agree. If I were offered a chance to go into space with those odds, I'd definately jump on it and go. The difference is astronauts truly know the risks and every flight is (at this point in our technological evolution) a crap shoot. John Glenn was not privy to such statistics in our astro-infancy and he went anyway; probably when the odds were 1:2 that the mission would NOT succeed. You are correct in saying that it's a matter of perception but perhaps we should be asking the people that actually want to risk their lives in the first place if it's a good gamble; however they already know the risks. That's a personal decision....money is a completely different issue!
I would tend to agree with you except for two points....you still make the car analogy (which I disagree with with) and a patch (recall) was still available well before the virus hit. Either way, it's a moot point.
GOD...I hate that analogy to cars! If you get rear ended by a software program you won't physically die; financially maybe, but not physically. When a software program physically kills someone....I'll change my mind. Until that day, LEAVE THE ANALOGY ALONE!
Lest us not forget....most serious hackers out there WANT to find bugs/flaws in MS software to exploit them for the premature releasers they are. To a point, people are actually searching out flaws to manipulate and crush MS. I wish people would expend that much effort in trying to promote an alternative OS then trying to prove they are superior because they can find a defect. Flaws are everywhere folks...I hope to God MS does not put as much money into investigating those flaws in Linux as they do in marketing.
I accept the fact that this is a pro-Unix / anti MS site, but when are you people going to realize that the general pubilc does not WANT to know about root directories or/xcxx/kkk/lll/iuy? I recently spoke with a friend of mine who didn't even know how to access his floppy drive; which made me think....just because you're a guru with any given application does NOT mean that it's the best; even M$. I for one, would love to join the *nix revolution but after reading a lot of posts here makes it scary. "If you don't do this right...you deserve to get hacked,,,," is a common one. No, I DON'T deserve to get hacked and most people don't want the responsibility of keeping up their own systems which is why hackers will always win. Either way, I would still like to join the revolution but like so many other people we just don't need or want that much information....especially when it comes to pooters that are supposed to make our lives easier. I'm sure I'll get a 'troll' on this one but it's just my observation.
Wow...I need a nap after that one. Just in case no one has told you, this is NOT 1871. There has been a lot of legislation passed since then (which I'm SURE you could comment on further), however, most people who read the articles on this site tend to know that America=Corporate America. Very few who read and/or subscribe to Slashdot will argue that the US government has not had its shortcomings but a rant like that actually reminds me that the first ammendment applies to you too....what a waste. Oh well, the price of freedom...er...slavery....I guess.
I guess 1+1=2 is not taught in American colleges; and rightfully so. But hey, America can still educate and train the best terrorists in the world. America "earned" most of our technology......and we didn't even have to send a student to Kabul U to steal some kind of hidden secrets or advanced technology (or Beijing for that matter). My point being....there are great minds all over the world but it seems that most congregate in American schools which is where the best minds (& funds) are. I just don't accept the argument that people can't adjust; ESPECIALLY if you come here to learn.
Do you know 'why' China values the group over the individual? It's called communism....which in theory (which we ALL KNOW TO BE TRUE) the individual is better BECAUSE of the group. That's all fine and great...until you come across the phrase "I'm more equal than you"; which we know fails. As soon as you have one individual that feels or acts superior you will have others that are discontent....which is the beauty of Democracy. You (for the most part) won't have a gun pointed at your head if you disagree with the government; THAT'S the difference.

I don't even think THAT would shock Hollywood anymore. Hell, they've been screwing people in the ass with ticket prices for years now.
Wow...I'm curious to know if Billy even USES a hotmail account.....how ironic if he doesn't!
I think you'll get pinball too....but that's just a guess!
I didn't have mod ability when I read your comment, so....wow; insightful!
Wow....only a true geek or a total pervert (both?) would put enough thought or effort into doing either. What a shame.
So much for Moses...I guess he never thought of that one! "Tablets....we don't need no stinkin' tablets..."
Wow.....and if you you flip them all in succession you get to see the movie! So much for the RIAA....just TRY to catch me doing that!

Although I respect your point....I don't think calling 911 would have helped ANYONE in NY that day.

...Aliens vs Predator...definately; especially the background music. It actually raised the hair on my arms the first few times I played it.
Probably because you did not know what you were doing. Sheesh, PP is a really simple program to use; especially for us non-programmers.

That all depends on how much your hour is worth....however if you're scrolling the articles in Slashdot, your time can't be worth very much.
...only if you have not followed the book series that Lucas has based his movies on. Screenwriters & bookwriters are two seperate entities.
Maybe they'll accept PayPal!

Uh-oh a Canadian with an opinion.......watch out
That's generally why I have a problem with the term 'African American'. Most blacks in America were born here; how does that make them 'African'?

Figures.
Boy, I hope you have that much freedom of speech in Beijing when you decide to move there.
