Maybe thats why they bought the patents, after all, all consoles are at roots graphical, if they have leverage on a graphical stance to put pressure on the other companies such as Sony and Nintendo to beckon, they can dominate the console market. My question is, why isn't Sony doing graphics work, after all aren't they a bigger company than Microsoft that relies on graphics across the board? Or has microsoft already sunk there teeth in to Sony with VIAO and other such products that rely on Microsoft technology?
at one time sgi had a passion for acquiring other companies (cray, etc), did they also own mips at one time? and could the whole acquisition and former micorosft man stumble be attributed to sgi's downfall?
could this be what converts the hordes to linux? everyday you see it become friendly and more open to the newbies, now all you need is start button, a windows update icon and a blue screen of death.
attitudes like this are what make windows so popular, you don't alienate people because of there lack of knowledge, when these turn of events happen to you, i hope the person in your shoes has the kindness of heart not be as cruel as you
i wonder if they'll make kde 3 look a lot sexier, that's where gnome has always one out. nowadays all gui's are going for the eye-candy and simplicity (which helps a lot, tho can be distracting), on the eye-candy side, kde 2 just doesnt cut it.
i have to admit gnome looks quit a lot dandier than kde, but the reason i prefer kde is its usability, simplicity, stablility and speed. it's rock solid and fast, show all those arguments against C++ don't always work well in production, a simple virtual call can be a lot less expensive than some exotic pointer to hell.
I think we'll see a lot more market support when Ogg Vorbis enter 1.0 and beyond, once all those bugs are ironed out, no one will be able to refuse it.
On the CPU cycle debate, i get about 1% cpu usage when decoding mp3's, about 3% on Ogg, this is with an ogg decoder thats far from perfect, it can only get better from here. Also I believe that it says on the vorbis.com that it's decoding complexity is very similar to that of mp3's.
I did work experience @ SGI and they made me do PCPQA testing, boy was that boring, trust me I can give you a compelling reason not to, you just try to PCPQA for IRIX!

As far as I'm concerned, I'm buying a GameCube!
did sgi dropping input for apache have any effect on its development, i'm lead to believe that sgi's apache efforts were quite considerable
why was solaris for x86 pulled? beyond the obvious statements given to avert the true reason.
