now there's a poll for which you can't have enough options...
Seriously, apart from rocket shooting cars, I've found most Bond accesoires rather dumb. A laser wristwatch strong enough to burn your way into a steel safe ? Com'on, we're geeks, but even those don't believe everything !
the scary part is that the largest belgian ISP is called skynet...
Fortunately, it's as far away from self-awareness as the cactus on the shelf above my printer. Which reminds me i still have to water it this year. Now where's that residue...
on the Apple rumours sites (forums.appleinsider.com, appleturns.com, www.mosr.com, www.macrumours.com,...) there's a whole lot of babling going on anout AMD going in bed with Apple. Either for a hammer version of OSX, or AMD fabbing the next PPC...
Prolly just nonsense, but exciting anyway..maybe..
as a developer, you simply make more money developing for windows. if I could sell software to linux users and make money of it, it would be byebye windows.
Thank you for your interest in Movielink. We want you to take part in the powerful Internet movie rental experience that Movielink delivers, but it is presently unavailable to users outside of the United States.

Jeez, some nerds have their heads so far up their spine they start by assuming every webthingie must be complex and needs a book.
OSX vs YDL : OSX wins
on
Is Mac OS X Slow?
·
· Score: 4, Interesting
I recently installed OSX on a really slow machine : an original bondi blue 233MHz iMac with ONLY 96MB ram. Theoretically not even sufficient to even run OSX. Previously, the machine ran yellowdoglinux and was not usable at all : launching Konqueror took forever. I never succeeded in getting openoffice fully launching the wordprocessor.
OSX On the other hand runs perfectly ! No hickups at all. Slow, admittely, but that's only due to insufficient ram. I auto-launch at startup :
- apache/mysql/php/openssl suite.
- Projecttimer
- DynDNS client
- Chimera
- process monitor
- terminal with at least 5 sessions
- fuzzyclock
- mail
booting the machine up to ready-to-use point takes nearly 10 minutes. A drag. But once it is there, I can use all these apps perfectly well. Switch times are well under 1 sec. Occasionaly I launch MS Office and keep it swapped away. When activating it, it's there in less than 10 secs. Considering it needs 100MB on its own, that's nearly a miracle !
Honestly : OSX is amazing in its speed. The gui is a tad slow sometimes with the fancyschmancy transparency in menus and all that (no QuartzEx here) but once you got you windows positioned and you're not dragging stuff around, it runs smototh enough for every average user.
My tiBook667 on the other hand screams like a scramjet. Beats every other OS in speed for me. I work twice as fast on it compared to the WinXP P4@2.7Ghz next to it with a GeF4ti4600.
In fact : I only use that PC for warcraft and DooM3 alpha:-)
which brings us to the one thing that OSX sucks at : openGL drivers of the radeon series are poopy at least. Most PCs play games better than macs, but hey, you've gotta give'm something to do, right...
doh. That's the same ugly interface, but with hot chix on the desktop wallpaper...
When the GUI allows to replace ugly shades of green with ugly shades of pink, you guys freak out like it's a work of art. Windows does exactly the same shit since 95 and there you'll barf it an ugly OS. I see NOTHING in AmigaOS that is better looking than windows.
Note to moderators (always talk to moderators. If not, they feel insulted and mod you down) : I'm strictly talking GUI here, not the guts of the OS. The article talked bout kewl gui, and I'd like to correct that. AmigaOS GUI is birdypoop IMHO. In the attic. With a fork.
not to insult anyone or disrespect the work of the OS authors, but the interface is BUTT UGLY. My neighboors donkey poops better gooey than this stuff.
On a G4 there surely has to be another OS with better interface. I vaguely recall something... Can't remember. I'll ask the donkey.
Of course, if the MS product really is inferior, then it won't sell.
I guess that's been proven wrong by now... linux is free and better yet they have only a marginal share of the desktop.
All the classical concepts like 'competition is good for the product and the consumer' are only valid up to a certain level. I'm not an economist but i think you can no longer consider those concepts valid once you're dealing with a player that has near-unlimited amounts of cash, is very aggressive and uses rather unethical methods of competing, has a monopoly in a closely related market and is willing to abuse that monopoly to crush non-followers of its rules...
On the other hand, I never said that MS had to be innovative. For all i care, they can write whatever they want, inferior or not. What I don't appreciate is the fact that they seek markets where they can use their economical weight to push out competitors.
can anyone remember the last time they actually came up with something innovative ? All they do is examine markets, pick one with only one large competitor and rewrite the software in an inferior way.
Fortunately, there's a big difference with netscape : netscape was a small company, the web was still in its infancy. Adobes pdf market (press) on the other hand is a billion dollar industry and adobe has quite a tad of experience with lawsuits. I doubt they'll just sit and scream murder...
no, just that it's yet-another-third-person-shooter. Bungie indeed makes little else these days. As does 90% of the console game makers apparently. Maybe it's just me : i used to play Q3A a lot (as well as Q1 and Q2) but the last few months I got bored with the repetitiveness ('finally' says my wife, until she saw I got hooked on warcraft)
chris should run a poll on the fps and 3ps games:
- lov'em
- never loved'm
- bored with it
- loved, then bored, now in love again
apart from the cool cloaking effect and the fish-eye view, I see little or no revolutionary stuff. From what a trailer can tell, I'd put it in the oni/halo category, which happens to be a rather crowded one.
It's been a while (since the doom3 trailers actually) since I've had a 'wow... this shit is awesome...' reaction, and SC-G doesn't trigger that for me.
Then again, I might have played just a bit too much fps games to get wowed anymore. All I see in those trailers is cannon fodder:-)
since when is a bunch of individualist wanking geeks a community ? It's not because we have a common interest in tech and CmdrTaco's sexlife that we're a fucking^H^H^H^H^H^Hcelibatarian community !
If it/he/she survives, they should give it/him/her a name.
I vote for the name "spam"

I've got root on your toaster.
By logic, this means I've got my toaster around your carrot... And I'm about to switch it on...
Who's the scared one now eh ??

I'd do it for 1%
Go for it! The slashdot community stands behind you united.
You go kablooey, we'll provide applause and karma.
Yeah. You're right. Absolutely fucking right. What a waste of money.
I suggest we cut the crap and launch you as guinnea pig for the NASA's first cheap-on-safety-flight.
the ones who do cut corners are likely not te be able to collect their price... they can offcourse imediately apply for darwin award nomination :-)
fuck... we slashdotted the sun !

Q.E.D.
true, but by dropping the IL, you're not retaining much of the advantage of C# over C++
The argument MS was pushing was 'one binary, mulitple languages'. Without IL, you're never getting there.

Kudos to the Ars team yet again for going deeper into CPU designs than 99% of the populace need to go :)
:-):-)
lol... did anyone else read an 'e' too many here ? Surely smells of goatse that way
found it !

...all sorts of wonderful new things can be invented that you and I can't imagine...
When will MS ever learn that we don't WANT to imagine how wonderfull the MS Office Universe is ?
