There less parts drift between lines. On the consumer stuff, they may change the chipsets or other minor things based on supply or supplier cost. Two identical machine models may have internal differences that requires different drivers and/or make spare parts harder to find. It's also harder to get spare parts second hand, both because a consumer line may only be around for 6 months before it changes and because the manufacturer doesn't stock as many.

business lines have the same components on the same models. Drivers will always be identical on identical models, maybe some options for graphic or wireless. Parts are interchangeable for a longer time, they only do complete redesigns every three or four years, in between the model changes, but they make sure that peripherals are compatible (not battery). Spare parts are also easier to find both because by the time I'm looking for spare parts, companies are retiring their fleets of laptops, and the manufacturer stocks more.

I don't work for dell, but I do recommend them to a lot of people. I often recommend that notebook users get the latitude line, their business class offerings are pretty reliable.

Even if you don't care about your genes, your children or other family members will be at a disadvantage because their "tribe" will not have the numbers to come out on top of any situation, be it riots, government, disease, or something else.

It's a moot point. Have you ever seen anything collapse in a non-catastrophic manner? You can't just stop the growth. Besides, the US has some of the lowest population density in the world. We have tons of room to grow. Europe can slow down, but then they will have their neighbors population crash down on them with nothing to cushion the shock.

What would you prefer our children inherit. A world with enough diversity and growth that there is some hope that we will continue to innovate our way out of problems, or a stangnant world with no growth? The worst option would be a world where the "free" world's population stabalized or decreased enough to be destroyed or enslaved by the less free parts of the world. It could happen.

It rarely makes sense to upgrade old servers wholesale. At the very least you should buy new disks and retain the old ones for quick back-out. Generally for a core piece of infrastructure, you should build the new system in tandem with the old and cut over to it.

Especially going from something afew years old in the current climate, most servers then did not support the amount of memory you can get in current x64 servers.

Plus, there is no charge for clients if you want to backup a database, or exchange server. It's all inclusive, even the open file client.
In my experience, getting open files backed up is the hardest thing in a 24/7 environment.

I jumped from helpdesk to field tech to Network Admin. That first Network Admin job will probably be at a relatively small company, under 10 servers. Do a damn good job and move on after a year or so, repeat with slightly larger companies.

Another good options is to aim for contract work 6 month here, a year there. It helps you make industry contacts and if you do good work you will be noticed.

I shouldn't have to buy 10 different brands and see which ones are acceptable. I can walk into any hardware store or gas station and grab an incandescent bulb that will just work fine, there may be some variation in light color, but it won't buzz, it won't dimm, and it will turn on when I flick the switch.

When I can grab a CFL off the shelf and have even one out of three of those guaranteed I will be happy to switch. We aren't there yet. The last one I tried was a GE bulb from target and it had a horrible high pitched buzz that irritated the shit out of me. It didn't start doing it immediately either, so it took me awhile to figure out what was going on. I'm not going to drop $50 so I can "try out" a dozen different brands, I'm just going to avoid something that doesn't work.
