You can be sure that Russia has much more respect for EU which is its biggest trade partner than that joke of a goverment you got in the US at the moment. Putin is happy to go over and have photo opportunities with Bush, but Putin hasn't listen to any of the wishes that Bush has had starting with support in Iraq. Putin knows that Bush is just a joke. Do you really believe that those cowards in the Bush administration would go ape shit against any nation with nukes. Just look at how Bush is pussy footing around North-Korea while invading a non-treating country like Iraq since they knew they didn't have any WMD. It is not only stupid, it is pure weakness on display for the whole world.
Eh, Gauss did experiments to check if space was curved, not Euler. And Gauss definitely had a reason to check it out, since Gauss, together with Lobachevsky and Boylai, was the first to realise that there are other types of geometry than the Euclidian. With this knowledge it is natural to want to experimentally test what kind of geometry our space has.
What makes Einstein so-called "intellectual superior", as if this is some kind of competition, is that Einstein connected gravity together with the geometry of space, creating a unified theory of all accelerated systems. Hilbert at the same time as Einstein also worked out how to use Riemann geometry to describe space, just to point out that there are many great mathematicians and physicists who have been thinking about how space curves in the history of science.
I guess you wanted to be funny, but the joke is on you. The Planck constant was named the Planck constant by Einstein himself, who was the first to understand that the constant Planck introduced in his equations to derive the black body radition law actually was a fundamental physical constant. (Planck himself just thought it was a clever mathematical trick). Einstein assumed that light comes in quanta (the so-called photon) to explain the photo-electric effect, and Einstein understood that the Planck constant gives the size of the quanta (together with the frequency of the light). In 1905 Einstein created the fundament of quantum mechanics and relativity with two ground breaking articles, while a third paper on Brownian motion gave the first direct evidence for the existence of atoms. Not bad for a Swiss patent clerk.
As a side note, the history is a bit similar to the Boltzmann constant which was named by Planck after he understood that the constant Boltzmann had introduced in his equation (giving a microscopic theory of entropy) was one of the fundamental physical constants.
That is one thing that is to the credit of UK prime minister, mr Phony Bliar, is that he has gone out in the public and stated that global warming is a bigger threat facing the world community than terrorism. Too bad Bliar have used his influencial position so poorly and achived so little against both global warming and terrorism...
That is a really stupid comment there buddy; this is data points from a whole ice core going back 650,000 years. That is a lot of data points and some really hard work to drill such a huge ice-core and then to analyse it, milimeter after milimeter.
Poincare was great, but his true greatness was in maths not in physics. Of the more well known things he did was related to topology and dynamical systems, with discoveries that point forward to what is today often called chaos theory.
Of course, had Poincare discovered the special theory of relativity his name would have been as great in physics as in maths, but few, even among people of Poincare's stature, can claim to be big in more than one field of science. For instance, Einstein was never a great mathematician even though he ranks with the best in physics. (Not to say that Einstein did not know any maths, but it is well known that Einstein had to work hard to master the maths needed to formulate the general relativity, maths developed by Riemann).
Don't know where my sig is from, just don't have anything better to say.
Actually, it was Einstein himself who called the "cosmological constant" his greatest blunder. And I think you point out the reason in your post why Einstein thought it was a great blunder; Einstein added the constant to his equation not because the physics demanded it but because of his own "prejudice" about the making of the universe. Remember, all what was needed for formulating the theory of special relativity was understood first by other great scientists like Lorentz and Poincare, but it was only Einstein who understood that our old "prejudice" about time was what was blocking to make a good physical theory. So, Einstein knew better than any other that you have to keep an open mind when formulating a theory in physics. It is not easy.
Actually, the Annan is trying to reform the UN to make it hard for countries that break human rights to be on the Human Rights commission. Ironically, with the stronger set of rules, it will be hard for the US to make the cut with their current tourtur camp on Cuba. Also ironically, is that the US is one of the countries, together with Iran and Cuba, that works against the current reforms of the UN. Another thing to think about is why countries like Libya works so hard to be on the Human Rights commission. If the UN is so inept, why would a country like Libya be worried about the Human Rights commission?
The UN is an evolving organisation which tries to tackle the most difficult challenges the world faces like war, natural catastrophies, international cooperation and diseases to mention a few. Your example is from 1967 ??! The UN then is very different from the UN now. Why not find something more resent?
Second, the UN is not a government and is not an entity that has as a purpose to send its own troops into battle. It is more a framework for countries to cooperate. Having peace-keepers wasn't really something the UN was made for either, but something that has grown out of the demands on (and successes) of UN.
I guess the problem with ICANN as the so-called independent american body is that it has been shown not to be very independent. If it was a truely independent body, then I guess the discussion would be moot.
It is strange how little people understand of the power and influence of the UN. Don't kid yourself, the UN is a very powerful institution, and its influence has been steadily growing since WWII. This is of course why neo-cons are doing their futile fight against the UN with all those lies and propaganda. It is also why the US leaders after WWII were smart and made sure the UN headquarter is on US soil.
The main goal for UN is to formulate and shape international law, and in this day and age with the rapid rise in international trade and travel, the UN has become more and more important. As I point out, international law is not formulated in some parliament in a days vote, but takes long time to establish and set into practice. But when some principles of international law have become practice, it is also a long process to change it again. This is why the UN process is so powerful and so important for all countries to play a part in. The way to play a part is of course by having good diplomates and good allies. (The lack of diplomatic abilities is one area where the Bush team will hurt US interests on the longest time scale, for these reasons).
Take as an example the International Criminal Court which now starting to make indicements. Its history goes back to the court cases against people from the third reich in 1946 (and also international courts before), and it has been a very slow process to make it into a permanent court in charge of cases of genocide etc. But this slow process is what you get when you need to build a system which most of the UN nations will respect and abide by. You might think that ICC will not matter to you, but the fact is that international law and court verdicts by this court will have direct influence on the laws in the country you live in. For instance, there are several verdicts in the supreme court in the US where the ruling is based on what the judges see as international law. The ICC took a long time to make, but its rulings will also have a long lasting effect.
It is naive to think that the slow pace of the UN system is a sign of weakness. It is just a sign of the process, not of a bureacracy that is not effect.
It is more correct to say that the commission gets elected by the (democratically elected) governments of the EU nations. Then the EU parliament approves of the commission. For instance, the current commission had to change one of its members because the EU parliament did not approve of the commissioner suggested by Italy.
Actually, even though one can paint this as a "victory" for the US (been some time since last time;-), I think the UN is very happy about the outcome. This is because this oversight committee is set up with the approval of most countries in the world, most notably both the EU and the US. International law is a slow moving process, which is based much on precedence and established ways for countries to cooperate. When a relative new thing (on the time scale of international law) like the internet comes a long, it is important then to make a new framework for countries to cooperate and make rules (treaties) that affected countries agree too. Of course international law will take inspiration from similar technology, like the telephone system, but there are many new challenges when talking about the internet.
This committee will now start its work and lay down a precedence on how the different countries can cooperate and make international agreements when it comes to how to run the internet effectively. Again, with the blessing of most UN nation as always is important when forming working international law. Of course, much precedence is already made by ICANN, but many countries were not particularly impressed with how ICANN has been run. This committee will make start making suggestions to ICANN how to change its course on certain issues. And in some years down the line, ICANN will again have to justify its existence, and the UN will by then have a working system to take over if this committee does its work properly (and ICANN doesn't).
I guess this can be seen as the first step to get rid of ICANN, or a chance for ICANN to reform. Whatever spin you like to put on it. It is at any rate a good thing that an agreement has been reached.
The U.N. is the worst government in the world, so large that no one is safe, so large that no one has a voice and so large that revolt and rebuilding is impossible.
The UN is not a government; the UN is a forum for governments to meet and negotiate. The UN is also in charge of creating international law and promote international cooperation. Of course, the UN is also the major player in fighting powerty and coordinate help when there are natural disasters or war, something especially the weaker in the world has learned to appriciate. The UN is also extremely important in fighting diseases, an example being how the WHO made the world aware of the flue influensa and how the UN is now trying to coordinate nations in stopping this to become a pandemic.
The UN was set up by the US and the other victors after WWII so that we would prevent similar events that lead to WWII, like a nation making up false proofs and lying so that it can invade another sovereign country. I am of course talking about Germany under Hitler invading Poland.
And the UN wants to kill your children and rape your parents. Why don't you actually try to learn something about the world you live in instead of spreading misinformation and hate.
On the flip side the US is afraid of giving up control because then some international organization will have the ability to damage the US economy.
That is a stupid comment. How exactly will international organizations have the ability to damage the US economy when the UN makes sure that no country has too much power over the internet? Remember, the US will as always be the biggest player on the UN scene.
And why should the EU accept that the US controlles a major part of their infrastructure?
There are also very few, if any, issues before the new UN led "ICANN" that will require approval of the full UN assembly where all the world states meet. So what is your point?
Yes, I think the EU agrees on that one; it should have been in the hands of Al Gore and not the incompetent Bush who won by telling that lame joke in every stump speech in 2000 (and of course because of daddy's Supreme court).
The EU would probably set up the new root servers in Geneva under UN control and then make all the European countries switch to them. And my guess is that the rest of the world will follow fairly fast. There is a huge demand for it in the EU, because the EU has waste amount of internet sites and want to use the.eu domain that ICANN for some reason still have not given them. In the way, the incompetence of ICANN to react to the needs of organisations like the EU has spelled the end of ICANN.
The UN *has* censured the United States for acting on those resolutions. The perfect example of this has been the Iraq war, which was a UN resolution that the UN got upset about when the US took action. Do you deny these things? If so, please be more detailed.
France (and other security councle members) said before voting on the last UN resolution that it was not allowing it to be used as an excuse for military action. The resolution was made to force Saddam to allow weapon inspectors. If military action would be necessary a new UN resolution would be have to be made with a new vote. The US went anyway without such a resolution, and has got the ass kicked in Iraq with a war done under false pretenses. Now the US administration is using the UN resolution as an excuse for invading a sovereign nation!!! Of course, it is the same administration that is trying to undermind UN on every turn. Make up your mind, either you follow what UN says and you don't invade, or you invade and take responsibility for your own action without blaming the UN. Show some balls.

Tax carbon emission; you just described the Kyoto agreement...

International law is not the same as international government. And check out majority rulings in the supreme court if you don't believe me ...
Too bad POTUS was busy hidding 9/11 with "My Pet Goat" if no-one else was in charge...

Maybe it will stop the US from doing grave mistakes like the Iraq war in the future? One can hope at least.

The internet is no longer a toy, that is why the EU is going to let the UN control the root servers instead of some badly run commercial company.
