Well if it isn't bad enough already I must say that a lot of files on a p2p network are already incorrectly named. Ever tried to download pr0n and find out that whats actually in the video is quite the opposite to whats in the filename. Seriously though, Ive seen people with files on their computers that are false in a certain way.
So we have to go through the points of the author and refute them.
1. Incorrectly named files. Been Done. Been done on purpose. People keep on d/ling. For some reason this example comes to mind: Busy Child from Chemical Brothers sounds exactly the same a Busy CHild from Crystal Method. And I have the Crystal Method cd. BTW, before the Napster fiasco ended, it was possible to crypt filenames.
Also if you name a file incorrectly, the search engines on p2p clients will probably never hit them anyway. And if the filename is misleading other sources can be checked and if nothing else, the filesize/dates of modification can be compared.
2. Broken files. It happens very often. But there are multiple sources on a p2p network so even assuming that clients get baited they will delete the useless/damaged file and re-d/l it from another source. Comparing filesizes before downloading is also a good strategy.
3. As for overharvesting, its just a way to block some traffic and I doubt that this would be legal. If an organisation put resources to this end, many surfers will get a slower service than what they expect and cause backlash. If I get a group of people and we block an street intersection the cops would surely interfere. Essentially what he is saying is lets spam the p2p network to hell until its abandoned. Too bad we all know what we think about spam.
The problem now is the concern that everyone who doesn't know about slashdot is going to be up the creek... until a less esoteric source posts the above facts. For sure none of the/. "crowd" would suspect a jpeg of being viral code.
Warning Sarcasm Below:
However, be aware, I might just make a jpeg viewer that deletes your vid card from your b0xen if it finds a white pixel adjacent to a black pixel in that photo of yours. Oops more fiction (rofl).
***Omg, mom stop sending me those god awful pics of the family, the jpegs are attacking my computer.
Just goes to show the influence that sci-fi has on development of technology. I remember watching Star Wars a New Hope and having that deathstar model floating in mid-air and all the communications where done with a holo-projection like device. Too bad this isnt an open-device (its contained within a globe).
I wonder who gets credit for this idea, especially since artists steal from each other.
First off I want to point out that the majority of posts that I have seen that suggest that sex is a good relaxant: Who you kiddin? We all know you never had sex.
Now for some serious discussion. The paradox for this problem is the way it "encourages" relaxation. Relaxatation is a state when one is at rest and doesn't concentrate on anything in particular (or anything at all). However, this proposed application will most likely impose a stong sensation that intense concentration is required and cause participants to worry on trying to relax (which will add dificulty to the game). This will make it stressful for first-time players who will undoubtedly abandon the experience. Also the term game implies, at least for me, that it is competitive. Need I say more...
However, I must point out to the developers that it isn't possible to coerce someone into relaxing. For a person to be worry-free requires a strong self-image and an apathetic attitude towards daily and life-long problems.
By the way, I fear it would be pretty easy to cheat in this game and therefore would have no possible multiplayer applications. (Who needs auto-aim or proxy bots when piece of copper connecting the elctrodes will do.)
roflmao. moderators should pick this one up. (maybe the wrong time though, its not funny if you have been effected by anthrax) not that any code monkeys would ever get any mail...
I agree with this idea. This is not news to anyone who has played chess and defeated their first opponent after losing the first ten games to that same opponent. Winning is winning and this gives most people a feeling of gratitude.
(Hypothetical)However, look at this from the stand point of the person who wrote this article. Some graduate out of some sleezy program in some cheap college that taught synonyms in english class. Whoever wrote this article probably intended it to be read by MTVgen (or other less intellectually stimulated people) who, on the most part, have never played chess. This would be news to a surfer dood who gets paralyzed and realizes he can get the same rush from chess.
However, in the interest of not knocking the research, this just adds to the scientific research on the human condition so that we can better understand ourselves. (Now I know that a chess game builds muscle mass by increasing the amount of testosterone in my system - guess the weight training had nothing to do with it.)
What is amazing is that for you everything seems so black-and-white. False, I don't hate Bill because he's rich. I no longer appreciate him because I don't feel that what he is doing at the moment will better the human condition. Henry Ford is an example of a business man who used his wealth to bring cars to the masses at low cost. It would be nice if the same model applied to Bill.
Btw, finding a new job is not the answer, that should be obvious. There are no simple answers right now.
I wonder what motivates these pro-MS postings. Maybe MS is really good (but I dont read too many positive MS postings of late), or this is part some weird new job description.
Hoping that you grow out of your fantasy world and see the light.
Alright, danheskett's an MS sympathetic. (grammar replaced by a better word). Anyway, the fact of the matter is that MS takes licensing too far. Distribution among immediate-family members should be allowed. MS should compensate all those users who bought their bloated OS by selling XP cheaper or expanding the user-license to include imm.family. Im sure Bill or all the greedy executives in MS wont hurt their wallet if they do so. (Geez Bill is the richest man-again).
Further on the topic of compensation and people doing immoral things. Is it not immoral for Microsoft to be selling OS's that are unstable and insecure (boy would I hate to have bought XP without an internet connection). I feel that I should charge Microsoft big $ every time I see a BSOD and lose my work. (OMG, does word and excel actually do that.. YES). I have lost countless hours of my life replacing lost data.
The sad thing is that people, like SHEEP, went to the store and bought XP. Not because they needed an *upgrade* but because their previous OS resembles something that was pulled out of a toilet and the propaganda they recieved that made them believe that they needed XP. I only use windows98 presently for 2 things, work-related documentation and games. (oh yes quake 3 BSOD'd windows a few times today).
I wouldnt consider myself a pirate if I came across XP, shit I'd throw it out. MS should only worry about its OS and the windows interface and sell that. Then I'd pay 10$ for a copy.
Well, since most readers are most likely open-source enthusiasts, I would like to say that an obvious solution is not to use McAFee and only install software that you have faith in or that you compile from the source. This is a damn shame that this retarded crap is happening.
I would also like to point out some problems I foresee. What will stop the FBI from hacking into my pc here in Canada if I install McAfee? Is this not outside of the FBI jurisdiction? Will software developpers only create software that complies to US demands the and sell it the world-over.
You better believe that in the near future more and more people will have a pc bundle and only use one (clean) pc to use the net (disconnected when not in use and removed from the network when in use) and use the others on a network to remove all data from that pc and store info. Essentially, if the trail of wires leads to and pc hd and its powered, it'll be your fault for letting the FBI access the info.
I guess we finally realise that we have no rights. Its just wishful thinking on our parts and propaganda used by the governments.
-I wish I could be sure that my thoughts werent being monitored.
-My own tragic Hero - GoV
I have to move every four months at least for the next little while and my last move I shipped my cpu with *name above*. I used puralotar twice, the first time I was very happy, didnt have a single problem.
The second time, my tower was dropped (luckily not the monitor). Now this shouldnt have been a problem since I insured the sucker for almost 2000$ (note that monitors cant be insured). Well, I got screwed because I had sent the computer to my brothers place and the delivery was made in a manner to conceal the damage. So my brother signed for it and didnt notice the damage. So I couldnt claim for the damages.
Anyway, in total it cost me about 700$ to replace damaged components, including my motherboard and tower.
The lesson: Be weary, delivery people dont want to get fired so they hide things.. my tower box was only wrecked noticably from one side as if it fell on the corner of a step.
Well, it seems that consumers are starting to feel overwhelmed at the flood of advertising of recent marketing campaigns.. AND ITS ABOUT TIME.
First off I would like to point out that a logo on a channel has little to no effect, I'm sure I am not the only one to use the display button to see what channel im watching(even if there is a logo). Also that I do not need to be reminded what channel I'm watching. If different channels had different programming maybe the networks wouldn't feel obliged to let us know. (wait a minute.. encouraging different types of programming and increasing the level of quality of programs would be bad because the networks would have to spend more money, thus decreasing their profits and rendering unable to keep their crappy webpages)
Whats worse is that if you count the program itself (without the logo), television is really a non-stop ad. (and you thought the pop-up ad spam on the net was annoying.. i hate what ad companies used flash for this). And I will not mention the fact that most commercials really suck. Theres no intelligent way of putting it. Whats worse is that companies pay advertising companies for this crap.
Too bad the post wasn't about program selection on television channels. The number of law-and-order clones keeps increasing and primetime tv is oriented for little school girls with half a brain. Thank god baseball is done this season and hockey has started.
I think it might be safe to assume that people who use micrsoft apps/os are quite habituated at using terms like "idiot" and other words to describe their malcontent. I know Ive already seen the BSOD today 10 times and uttered impolite nouns/verbs.
Since the "bad" terms are obviously so familiar with ms users, it would be a waste of time to include these in their spell-check/thesaurus.
On a less sarcastic note, some synonyms for idiot are: retard, reject, dumb**s, moron... the list goes on.
My advice is not to count on any code for text editing, trust the big dictionnairies and thesaureses (dat spelt write, spel-chek iz dowen).
I just wanted to point out what terrorism is supposed to be.
terrorism - the systematic use of terror especially as a means of coercion
Meriam-Webster
Thus I would use terror as a means of inducing a state of fear unto my victims via methods of violence or other with the event of controlling my victim.
What my problem is here is how viruses cause a state of fear for microsoft. Granted, microsoft could be worried that continued attacks could force microsoft to write more stable/secure programs. But microsoft isnt suffering, Im sure they arent worried just yet about going bankrupt. I also haven't seen any form of publication citing microsoft as being afraid.
I just wish microsoft wouldnt be so lazy as to turn to the judicial system for problems that there own software could have prevented.
But I'm not entirely without sypathy. Viruses do scare a lot of people. For instance, an elderly member of my family just got into computers and he is very afraid of viruses. The motherboard shorted on his pathetic hp minitower and his first thought was that it was caused by a malicious virus, when the blame should have been directed to the hardware manufacturer. (too bad the warranty expired a month prior.. coincidence?)
Anyway, I feel that extended prosecution of viral programmers should be conducted, I feel that the intrusion on my PERSONAL computer is a crime. Just don't think this is the right way to do it. This is all an example of using the events of 09/11 for personal benefit- opportunistic?
Still my own tragic hero...
Hackers and crackers are criminals, but they arent necessarily terrorists.
I think then all americans who want there own freedom taken away are outright uneducated stupid pieces of...
People forget why they moved to the states.. Liberty, Prosperity?... Freedom?
I guess freedom isnt important anymore, lets go back to our totlitarian ways so that the USofA can become the new USSR.

But if they do consider changing, i would they get a different domain name for their second service. I just dont like change.
