How is Palladium supposed to help or "enhance" the users experience?

In my opinion this is going to just frusterate the every day user, and make the "hacker" laugh at Microsoft's effort of a controlled system. The average user wants to go on his/or her computer - listen to music & chat.

They do not want some "secure" music file, they just want to be able to listen to the song. They don't care if its authenticate, or if it contains a "virus".

I believe that this is just a useless effort on Microsoft's part, and lots of wasted time & money for the user.

    And for my lead on..

How much is this going to cost Microsoft to develop? For the bug fixes & patches because of Screw ups in the development proccess which don't let me open my Microsoft Powerpoint file.

Have you just installed the OS on your computer? And "tried" the sound, because in FreeBSD sound isn't compiled by default, nor are alot of other things.

You can find information on compiling Sound Support into your FreeBSD kernel .

There is another problem I noticed if you are using KDE, the default sound device is /dev/snd0 which doesn't seem to want to work on FreeBSD, so you have to set it to /dev/pcm0 or whatever your sound card is..

Hope you get it working, its an awesome OS. I finally switched to it on my desktop after they came out with the ATA fix. :)

Actually thats viabley possible. You can "cap" a certian port or IP address using DUMMYNET. I run a free shell provider (which will name anonymous cause I don't want it /.'ed), and I use DUMMYNET to make sure that SSH is always non-lagged.

For more information about dummynet check out http://info.iet.unipi.it/~luigi/ip_dummynet/ - I believe it is only for *BSD, as I only use FreeBSD. But you never know.

It is also possible that you could use a Apache Module such as mod_throttle or mod_bandwidth to cap a certian user.

I have heard cases where it is possible to just cap invididual accounts with DUMMYNET.

Have fun. Running a shell provider or a free service is challenging because you always get people attacking you. If you do it, make SURE that you are able to get filtering at your ISP.

I have tried many times to install Linux on any of my computers, of which I have many and varients; and each time I fail -- because due to the fact that Linux's hardware support is flaky at the best; even if you do a custom kernel, sometimes you can't even get into the installer.
