You people are fools. AT&T doesn't really care if iPhone's are exclusively theirs. They'll get their new contracts from merely the appearance of exclusivity and maybe the visual voice mail. In fact AT&T earns *more* money when an iPhone user buys and unlocked French phone because, in that case, they don't pay Apple squat! Apple itself is the loser if Americans use grey market French iPhones.
If Apple says "you can't copy multi-touch" then Nokia says "fine your not allowed to sell any phones period." Apple might fight back with their more general PC patent portfolio, but Nokia's patents are more relevant here, plus Apple's software patents aren't valid in Europe while Nokia's patents are valid in the U.S.
Apple needs those patents just for entry into the phone market. Nokia has basically just said "we'd rather compete honestly with Apple, not just kill their trendy new product." And that's exactly what Apple wants too.

Otoh it's simply stupid for any cafe or restaurant to not offer free wireless. If I'm travelling, I site in cafes & restaurants, but leave if they don't have free wifi, and I often explain my reason to the server.
Just today I spent $35 on lunch but passed up like 6 places first. If just one traveller walks out of your buisness every three days, your losing 10 * (average purchase) per month, which is way way more than wifi cost. Never mide all those local who'll become regulars for the wifi. Or all the non-computer owners who'll start coming because they see a hoard of regulars. Or that laptop users will attract more afluent customers.

Just buy a sticker for the time you'll be using the area : day, week, month, or year and time of day. If the cameras see your sticker, they ignore you, if they don't they photograph your license plate & ticket you. If they make a mistake, just show some cop your sticker.
No point asking everyone to modify their cars.
