  2. dollars to MHz on Low-end Laptops? · · Score: 1

    "Most used laptops run twice their cpu clock speed in dollars [$ = MHz * 2($/MHz)]"

    I don't understand.

    $ = MHz * 2($/MHz)
    $ = 2 MHz * $/MHz
    $ = 2 $ MHz^2
    1/2 = MHz^2
    Sqrt[2]/2 = MHz

    Perhaps they meant "$ = 2 MHz", or "2 $ = MHz", but I'm not sure which from the sentance. Does anyone understand it?

    2) User_2 hits ctrl-alt-f2, logs in at tty2, runs startx, starts some programs.

    Two users are logged in, it is very easy to switch back and forth (with ctrl-alt-f7/ctrl-alt-f8 or maybe f9 and f10 on some distros), and no programs ever stop running. Now, I don't know if there is a way to do it with *dm, but it doesn't sound to me like it would be very hard to implement.

    I have spent $0 on Windows in the past N years, since I have not bought any copies of Windows. I have spent $0 on Linux in the past N years because I download distros and burn them to CD. (I suppose this counts as spending some fraction of a dollar on Linux for each black CD, but whatever.)

    Well, I didn't think that quadong meant anything in real life when I started using it, but I did some fairly exhaustive searches and this is the grand total of what I found that has nothing to do with me, none of the following links mention "quadong" outside a list:

    1) It is a fruit bearing Australian tree (referenced here, here and here)
    2) It seems to be a game for Amiga (referenced here, here (tried to follow up, no luck), and here) that can be sold in German for 5DM.

    In reference to me and without knowledge of the above two meanings, here is an IRC log showing one amusing incorrect interpretation of quadong.
    And finally, you may chose between a well written but inaccurate story (free verse psuedo-poem) and a correct, but boring, story (prose) of how I came to use the word.

    Ok all of you. I said that about search and replace knowing that I'd probably get sed thrown in my face. The point, of course, is that when I, am word processing, I don't want to stop, take 30 minutes to learn sed, and then continue. Worse, if the document is in any format other than text, you have to deal with converting out, converting back and hoping none of the formatting went bye-bye. Trust me, all in all, it's easier to do what I do in Word than it is to do it at the command line. There are all sorts of things that I won't tolerate using a GUI for, but this isn't one of them.

    What Linux software replaces Office, pray tell? I love Star Office, and it is great that it is avaliable free, but it just isn't as good as MS Office. It has fewer options and it is generally less slick. One of the main things I use MS word for when I am not writing papers is doing large "search and replace" jobs. I write a little macro and then sit back as it parses all my text for me. Star Office doesn't seem to have this capability in nearly the strength that MS does.

    But actually, the only thing that makes me want to run windows right now is Nintendo emulation. I need my NES, and linux emulators just don't cut it yet. When I can have Nesticle quality emulation under Linux, I will be happy.

    So... you don't want to go to all the trouble of occasionally holding down the button for one measly second, and you might accidently slip off the button while you try to pick one of the menu items? This whole thread is getting a bit too pendantic for my liking

    People always tend to scoff when things like this are said. Other examples are things like: I need alt-tab so i don't have to move my hand to the mouse everytime I switch windows (some X configs). I want to have a backspace (backwards) and a delete (forwards) so I don't need to hit right, backspace for a forwards delete. I want to have "ls" aliased to 'l' so I don't have to type the 's'. I need a number pad so I can type numbers faster. I need a scroll wheel so I don't have to move the mouse over to the scroll bar. I need an alt-F4 equivalent so I don't have to move the mouse to a little button to close windows. The list goes on and on... The thing is, most of these things save less than a second each time they are used, but if you remove any of them, I, and many other people, get annoyed very quickly. Why? Because for one thing, we do these actions many times a day, so it adds up, and even if we didn't, I'd like you to give me one good reason why I should wait that second if there is a simple way to avoid it.

    See the other poster for comments on the color pattern.

    As for the symetry making it good for right and left handed people, there are plently of non-circular mice out there that are still symetric about the y-z plane. Try out the logictech wireless mouse: two buttons, scroll wheel, no hand preference.

    Also, this counts on the single click action not occuring until you release the button. I'm not sure if this is always the case, but even if it is, the dependance on it doesn't make me feel really comfortable. I might let go of the button a little to soon and click thru to a page that I didn't want. Annoying...
