  2. The Notion of a Perfect Human Being on Will Genetic Engineering Kill Us? · · Score: 1

My problem with manipulating human genetics, is that perhaps there is a reason that we have diseases that target certain genes. What ever happened to natural selection? What if, in 500 years, we genetically evolve the human race to be so similar to each other in genetic makeup, that all it would take is a simple genetic disease, that targets our specific "perfect genetic makeup"? What would happen then? There is no escape from such a scenario.

We don't need a huge boulder plummeting into our ocean to kill us all off, all it takes is our longing to be perfect, to destroy us.

This is speculative, of course. I cannot predict, with certainty, that humanity will go in that direction, but it is definately a possibility, and it needs to be considered now, while we still have a grip on who we are, and what we want, as a race.

Perhaps you don't think on a large enough scale.. What about submarine technology? The more technology we can fit in cramped quarters, the better. Or how about those cool star trek tri-quarters? I would like to see something similar come along in my lifetime. In the big picture, every advance we make to improve technology is a VERY important step. Perhaps some very rich entrepreneurs could come into the picture and help fund the MagLift, and make it a reality. I truly believe that this will be the next step in developing a low-cost launch technology.

NASA, i spit on thee for wasting the last 40 years. That 40 years could mean the difference between getting nailed by a global killer or engineering the technology to setup a habitat on Europa.

You don't have to buy it, there is no legal constraint for someone to make an OS to suit your needs, or, for that matter, anyone else's needs. I wish people would understand this.

If all you can do is sit in a *nix community bashing MS because YOU paid for an OS that didn't suit YOUR needs, then you, sir, are an idiot.

On the other hand, if you would really like to help us *nix people develop an operating system that doesn't BSOD every 5 minutes, then how about you pick up a book on OOP and c++ or C, and help us develop it?

You sir, are quite stupid. And I can say that, because you have proven yourself ten times over.

Samsung has made a bad move doing this. The actions of a company definately affect their sales, how can you argue they do not? Regardless of their satelite location, it shows horrible HQ management. What company would let their satelite office make a judgement to hold back review monitors from Tom? That's just asking for it.

And another thing, Samsung has just lost my business for their mentality on this topic. If they dare chew out the little guy, then what is my business to them? I control the purchasing for a large West Coast company, with numerous locations around North America. I was actually looking into the Samsungs, and I am a die-hard THG and HOCP fan. But this stunt has made me go sour on Samsung. I even wrote to Samsung once I heard about this.

So a companys' actions definately do affect my decision on purchasing. As a fellow system admin, you should be ashamed that you would support a company that discourages the internet portion of reviews. Heck, I would believe Tom over PC World any day.

True... I believe that the policy up here in Canada is that 3.5 is the signal loss cutoff point, and they won't deliver adsl if there is signal loss (support issues). Although we have moved to new racks and modems that broaden the distance from C.O. to modem. 9800 ft. is probably the physical distance and 18000 is the wire loop distance like you said.

Either way, the service up here, I can say with confidence, is very stable and reliable. The speeds are very consistent, and down time is at a very minimum.

Not to mention if they bundle your pair with a HDSL line or frame relay line, you're screwed.
