  1. Isn't it interesting.... on .xxx Domain Remains in Limbo · · Score: 1

The lead story (at the time of this post) is that ICAAN "is denying that it gives the US government too much control over its operations" and here we have a delay in the decision to implement an .xxx tld because "the proposal hit a snag in August when the U.S. Commerce Department asked for more time to hear objections." How much control is too much?

  2. This is giving Google too much credit... on How Text Ads Tamed Ads on the Wild, Wild Web · · Score: 1

Sure Goolgle may have only had text ads when it started up and X10 ads were every where but I don't think that Google had all that much to do with the decline of popup/under ads. X10 was becoming obnoxious enough that people were starting to use popup blockers to keep them from showing up. It is just a coincidence that this happened at or about the time that Google came on the scene. If Google's text ads really were what killed X10 popunder ads then how come I am again getting innundated with popup/under ads even though I am using Firefox with its built-in popup killer turned on. The answer is that the advertisement battle is still on. Once advertisers get too agressive the users fight back with blockers. Once the blockers become effective the advertisers find a new way to push their ads until the conumer finds a new way to block them (and the cycle continues).

The user may or may not want or need to tinker with the computer but if the system is open then at least somewhere along the line it can be customized for individual needs.

Since I am stuck with dialup at home, you won't see me downloading any offered shows. Even if I did have 100Mbps access I wouldn't bother to take the time to download a low resolution movie for $5 when I can buy a previously used DVD from Blockbuster for ~$10 and have a high quality movie with all the included extras (not available with the download). On top of all this I don't think I would really want to watch a movie or a TV show on a little 3-7 inch screen but then I don't have an hour commute to get to work either.

That is why I have always found it quite funny when the US complains that the UN is ineffectual. Maybe if they would pay their dues and give the UN the finances they need to do their job things would get done. Again I must state that I am basing this on old information. What I'm talking about is that when people watch movies at home they are able to make as much noise as they want without considering anyone else. You can pause the movie to take a call. You can stop in the middle and come back later. You can... Does everyone watch a movie like this at home. No. But for some reason alot of people that do do this at home think that they can do the same in a public theater. You would kick people out (if they are disruptive) that you invite over so you probably aren't one of the ones that would talk in the theater. I have been to many shows (and not the general or even PG shows) where some idiot decided it was better to not have to pay for a babysitter and bring their kids with them. The movie is obviously not ment for these kids and thus they become restless and disruptive. These are the kind of people that don't seem to be able to distinquish the difference between watching a movie at home and watching a movie in the theater.

I do have a problem with people that don't know how to behave in a theater though and I blame this directly on home theaters. Why do people think that watching a movie in a public theater is the same as watching it at home? I don't care to hear your running commentary on the movie. I don't care if you are not interested in the movie and want to yap about what you did lat weekend. I do want you to shut up and watch the movie or leave and let me enjoy the experience I am willing to shell out $10 for. How hard is it really to shut your cell phone off while you are in the theater. At least set it to vibrate and then head for the lobby before answering it. Sorry rant over.

I doubt that laptops will replace desktops completely EVER. The only reason that I can currently see for having a laptop is if you need the portability. Whenever I am asked if someone should buy a notebook I discourage them from getting one unless they do need the portability. Notebooks are musch more expensive than desktops (for same configurations) and if something breaks you the whole system is basically useless (unless it is a hard drive or memory). It is much easier to swap out parts (for repair or upgrade) on a desktop. If companies ever get together and make all parts standard (replacement slots for video, sound, memory, etc.) the desktop will continue to be the better solution (again except for portability).

The best part of the levy on blank media in Canada is that the money collected is divided up based on airplay and record sales. So independent artists and unsigned artist that might be selling their music at small concert could in theory be paying money into the system in order to sell their own music. That money in turn will go to established acts and will be of no benefit to the small acts at all. This would happen if the independent or unsigned artist decided to produce their own CDs using their computer and blank recordable media (which are subject to the Canadian media levy). Perfect way to compensate artists!?

Since you want to bring this back to the disscussion at hand let me ask you a question. Do you think it is right that the broadcasters were given a chunk of the public airways for free and when the government decided to reallocate the EM spectrum that those broadcasters should be able to sell off their current alloted spectrum for a profit?
