R.A.T.M., Widespread Panic, Pink Floyd, Rush, and the Police are all insanely popular. I'm surprised you had any trouble using _that_ many P2P networks
For the most part, I can find songs by the artists. Finding entire albums, on the other hand, can be quite difficult. And even when I do, I find that a lot of the files are at least partly corrupted. Take, for instance, RATM. I have purchased their first album more than once, and managed to trash it (I'm hard on CDs). So I got on the p2ps, and downloaded the individual songs of the album. 3 or 4 of them were corrupted - pops and hisses and such. So I got on again, and retried, but with different bitrates, in the hopes of avoiding the problem. Some success, yes. But it was a pain. Having to listen to each download to ensure it's not screwed up in some way is a pain. And not finding out until after burning to CD is very frustrating. (I'm listening to 'Wake Up' right now, and 5 minutes into it it starts popping - 'Fistful of Steel' starts popping and skipping right away). P2Ps are fine and all, but to say that every song out there is available in mp3 format is simply wrong. Often, when I do find what I want it's in.wmv or.ogg. I use iTunes; I want.m4a or.mp3. Oh, and regarding SoulSeek, thanks, but I use OS X, and it's Windows-only.
you are forgetting that kazaa and limewire have every song available in unprotected MP3 formats
Bull. Dream Syndicate (an 80s era rock band) is hard to impossible to find, as are the Hoodoo Gurus. Natalie Merchant, Rage Against The Machine, Al Stewart, Janes Addiction, Paul Simon, Pink Floyd, Widespread Panic, Rush, The Police - all artists for whom I own tapes or damaged cds, and can't easily replace via p2p. Sure, you might get some hits, but whole albums? I think not. It took me almost a year of searching ('though not every day) to find all of Everclears first album. I never did find Pond, and so purchased it from the ITMS. Even some newer music, such as Dr Dre, is difficult to track down. If my 13yr old got fed up with p2p, then really, how easy is it? And we use Poisoned, which searches FastTrack, Gnutella, Ares and OpenFT from one browser.
I think I remember reading about OSX having the ability to pull a usb device during write. It will give an error on screen, and then when you stick it back in it just continues the write... anyone else remember something like that?
I can't comment on USB devices, but I've unplugged my iPod in the middle of write operations without a panic occurring. And yes, a dialog appears with a warning telling you not to do such things as it could cause data corruption.
It doesn't have the tab sequence that windows or linux does, where you can get to any control on screen using the tab key, then use the keyboard to adjust it/enter text.
Apple Menu->System Preferences->Keyboard & Mouse->Keyboard Shortcuts->Keyboard Navigation. This turns on several keyboard nav tricks.
Windows has the win+R hotkey that brings up the "run" dialog. From there I can launch applications in a second, without using the mouse.
Finder->Applications->Utilities Drag 'Terminal' icon to Dock. -OR- Apple Menu->System Preferences->Accounts->your account->Startup Items Press '+' at bottom of list. Select Applications->Utilities->Terminal Now, whenever you log in, Terminal will launch.
Once the Terminal is in the Dock, you can: Ctrl+F3->arrow up/down to Terminal icon->Return/Enter From the terminal, type open/FullApplicationPath/AppName.app Admittedly not as easy as win-R, but you could also drag the 'Applications' folder to the Dock, and using Ctrl+F3 and the arrow keys find whatever app you're looking for. If you want access to the entire drive via arrow keys, just drag it to the Dock, and use the same process. Of note, when you're using the arrow keys to traverse folders, typing a character takes you to the first file/folder that starts with said character.
I've got one Windows machine, running 2K Pro, and hiding somewhere on it is ISTsvc.exe. Pesky little bugger. Can't seem to get rid of it, but I can keep it contained with: AdAware Spybot Search and Destroy SpywareBlaster and F-Prot Antivirus, which actually does a good job all by itself. I tried the Symantec Istbar removal tool, but to no avail. I might try digging around in the registry again, but last time I did that it didn't work either.
Why should you buy it? Well, don't, but if you want to posess it, you have to cough up the cash.
Yeah, but not to them. Buy used, either from record stores or pawn shops. Find old tapes at garage sales. Once you own a copy of the song, then download it. IANAL, but this seems like a legit loophole to me. Sure, it's gonna be harder to find new releases used, but not impossible. The point is, the **AA doesn't get a cut.
Notice the $1.2 billion in cash Apple had at the time. The $150 million MS 'invested' was part of a legal settlement and licensing agreement, and a drop in the bucket.
If I were Apple I'd think seriously about licencing the fabled x86 build of OS X for business use only.
It would make far more sense for them to license the OS for clones. I personally expect to see G4 and maybe lower-clocked G5-based clones once Apple moves its entire line to the G5. This time around, they need to ensure that their machines are the fastest, unlike what happened in the '90s.
And yet most cds with 'decent' music on them are recorded and mastered in the analog domain and sound pretty much like crap anyway.
Interesting. Any references? Also, doesn't the FM signal cause even more degradation? For instance, I've heard that MP3 player FM transmitters such as the Griffin iTrip, while great in theory, generally produce poor sound.
What makes you think Apple would license AAC to any store or portable-player company for any less than exorbitant fees? What good does it do Apple if people can play AAC music bought from Napster on a Dell player, unless they get huge license fees that no company is gonna pay?
Dear Senator - I would like to express my concern regarding the Real ID Act, which has been attached to an appropriations bill committed to supporting our fighting men and women in Iraq and Afghanistan. It seems to me that to pass such a piece of legistlation without first debating its merits does not demonstrate the calculating and reasonable nature of our US Senate. I would urge you to vote against this bill on these grounds, or seek to remove this article before voting on the bill to which it is attached.
Thank you.

The HP printer driver is probably a bit of an issue though.
HP drivers wreak havoc on my OS X systems; I find I have to kill the HP Communications process or CPU usage tops out. This on a 1GHz iMac G4 w/ 256MB. Same with my old G3 300 Powerbook.
I think Apple should carry the 'dashboard' naming paradigm to its logical conclusion, and call interactive widgets 'controls' and passive widgets 'gauges', like they are on the dashboard of my car.
Last time I checked, Konfabulator launched a new vm for every widget, which causes a significant reduction in perfomance. So while the idea may be similar, Dashboard is a far superior implementation. And Apple has implemented utilities on the desktop for a long time; to me Dashboard looks like a better implementation of the idea behind the Control Strip from OS 8/9.
FTFA: "While they do give credit to Apple's iTunes for search inspiration"
Do they mean "Spotlight?"
No, they're talking about how iTunes has always done live searching of its music database; type in the search box and the possibilities present themselves as you type. The Finder does this also, but only for file names. Spotlight searches within the files themselves as well.
I saw both 'Empire' and 'Return' opening day, without waiting in any line. It wasn't the first showing of the day, but I didn't care; I was in school anyways, and I still got bragging rights. Saw 'Phantom' first day as well. Almost walked out during the opening scene, later wished I had. Didn't bother with 'Clones', don't think I'll bother with 'Revenge'. Why sully my childhood memories any more than they already have been?
Lets talk about about upgrading, since we need to upgrade about every 2 years. Whats the upgrade path of a Mac mini? Ebay and buy a new computer? Apple loves to sucker people, whether its promising upgrades(performa scam) and never coming through or just making the box nonupgradeable/nonfixable(mini, ipod battery). Its the two year disposable product.
Every two years? I'm using a 6-yr-old powerbook (G3 300) with 10.3.8 and 320MB. Bought a $70 USB 2/FW combo card a while back, got my keyboard, mouse, and iPod plugged in right now, works great. Regarding the iPod battery, you do know that it's replaceable, right?

Thanks for the info. However, neither site returned what I sought.

Apple did not develop, nor do they own the rights to, the AAC music format. Anyone can license AAC. Apple owns the DRM, FairPlay.
(tig)
Because the remote analog FM signal, regardless of source material, doesn't produce as high a quality sound as a local CD.
