Longhorn,.NET, WinFS, Avalon, Indigo, Blackomb....???? XP SP2 for 1 year????
If youhaven't realized it, computers are still in pre-alpha stage and all seems that they'll never get out. Either front-page about beta or there's no news
Problem with this logic is that not everybody is gonna use DBFS. For example: Some people would like to use Reiser4.
Proper thing would be dummy kernel (or some higher VFS, but making whole thing independant of wheter graphic mode is present or not) API for this kind of file access. If accessed FS is not DB related then it should convert standard functions (implementing some Metadata index on basic FS). If accessed system is Database FS then it should go trough it's native layer.
Who says that
MOVIES="*.avi *.mpg *.qt" for ftype in $MOVIES; do
ls/mnt/volume/Personal/$ftype
aka.
select from fs where (path = '/mnt/volume/Personal/*') and ((path = '*.avi') or (path = '*.mpg') or (path = '*.qt'))
is different than
select from fs where ((type='movie') and (location='Personal'))
Second option could pose other options. Like searching by actors and directors, MP3 info, Office tags etc. But all open and save routines could be done trough and with Metadata. While Metadata and data would be connected.
Let's say I copy MP3 files from CD. CD is not DBFS. All my tags go down the drain. Hope you don't expect I will copy all files trough this daemon or in graphic mode at all. Just as on plain system as on DBFS.
Off course, it would help if VFS layer could detect MIME and act accordingly. Example: Old ISO9660 burned CD (or even better ssh mounted drive) with MP3. I copy these files to my computer remotely from terminal console on some other computer, computer being copied to, resolves ID3 and updates Metadata from ID3 tag index on fly. Without having some cron job. Same thing goes for my Office files. All files have it's creator and it's description. Why wouldn't go in Metadata index when file is received and saved from e-mail. If this problem is not solved before implementation then all you can expect are holes in your Metadata with a lot of non-indexed data.
Well, that example is nothing new. Reiser4 already does that with plugins. The question here is:
Will everybody use Reiser4? NO Will everybody write metadata plugin for Reiser4? NO Will Gnome or KDE support Reiser4 directly? NO
Would this have better chance when Universal file access would be defined independent from FS and independant from Graphic mode? YES
What a stupid thinking. Both things: Making it for KDE and porting it to Gnome.
In reality DBFS should only provide higher API besides standard one. And if desktop or application supports this API here's all of the functionality. If not plain FS access is all you get. In Gnome case gnome-vfs should detect and use DBFS, and in KDE probably the equivalent is KIOSlave.
Kernel should set some standard API for filesystems like DBFS and Reiser4 if not for other reason then to set starting access point for filesystems like these.
Nah, don't worry kernel WILL be complete in time. But on the day of the release SCO (if they will still exist) will sue them for cca. 5-10 million lines of stolen code
Yes, but what is super luxurious house [Longhorn - even though it costed as much as Apollo space program] really worth when it's corner stone [WinFS - major selling point] is shabby and beta???
Don't get me wrong, but... you are actualy happy you pay more for less???
Either that or my brain-calc is broken.
Cost Calculation: Updates for XP - $0 Updates for your server - cost $0 You are happy that there's no new releases of software - so if you wouldn't buy that software cost would be $0
But you are happy that you are paying annual fee??? With that thinking in mind you'll soon be outsourced
We just got XP and 2003 server rolled out everywhere and I have a feeling we are *way* ahead of most other places.
I have all places still running Win2000 server (those few that still use Windows for server and all behind firewall), and it does it's job as it should. Tested version of 2003 didn't make enough progress to replace thing that worked for so long in such pleasurable manner. How do you define your *AHEAD*???
Don't know about you, but I spent enough money on M$ in my life to write as much $ signs as I please. This overexpense forces me to write M$ not some childish expression.
And as much as I would like to stop buying windows I can't (at least notebook part). Every HP notebook comes with M$ windows only. With me that means at least three times in 1 year more than I would need. Now your answer should be that I should stop buying HP and buy notebook that can be bought without Windows or that I should blame HP for not selling notebook without Windows.
Fact is that M$ still gets money from me and if I don't use their software I can at least call them with the name I'm most familiar with.
I think that whole world is envious for this. Only M$Office users can get annoyed by this feature so much, that they can disable it. The rest of the world must learn to live without this annoyance.
Actualy, not right. In some cases M$Office is Yugo and in some OO.o is Yugo.
I was using M$Office for a long time. And I must admit it was a real pain in the A$$. My requirements are either long (about 70-150 pages) technological papres or simple Invoice like features (up to 4 pages).
Problem 1: (long documents) is that whenever you choose different printer whole document gets screwed.
Problem 2: (invoice like) the only way you can incorporate RT calculated table is with OLE. Which limits you to one page.
btw. I was never fond off Excel like except when I needed on-screen calculations, but for printing sucks major (just as OO.o Calc and others in this kind of software).
Let's say that I agree that M$Office is Ferrari, but that just limits you to the road. Sometimes off-road veichle would be far better. And in case of going trough the woods (terrain, not road), you wouldn't come far with your Ferrari, while even plain sucky Yugo would probably come to the finish line
It'll be part of KDE - where DE stands for Desktop Environment. KDE is much more than a window manager, it's an entire desktop system, so this is the perfect place to add it.
Wrong! Here is my example: KDE for me means... K3b??? I don't use not even one KDE app besides K3b
Again, search engine being part of KDE or Gnome is plain stupid and wrong. In my opinion it just means that developers that made this statement are ignorant and stupid.
Why? Such search engine should be part of fd.o and not single desktop environment. Let all apps under any environment use the same spec and same engine. Like MIME, like Start Menu, like Desktop.
To make File Metadata storage DE dependent??? This wouldn't boost Linux, it would just help Windows to gain even more. You can imagine M$ adds after this, aka. "WinFS rocks because implementation is GLOBAL, Linux has Metadata storage but implementation sucks, they name few examples about creating file in gedit and not seeing it in this search, while their..."? I think that we would be better off without this at least if general idea of implementation is so poor and constrained.
p.s. Linux and free software is greater than KDE or Gnome competition
Here's one 3pi0 and r2d2 don't know who Darth Vader is at begging of Ep. 4. I guess there was some tin-can brainwashing aka. "attack of the sunday commercial tin can opener" involved here.
and more such mistakes you can find if you read/. articles about SW
What got fucked up is just the fact that Ep 1 sucked
And Ep. 2 was no better
I hope he dies at the hands of Darth Sidious or even better Lord Vader, in Ep 3
I think that I remember about Jar Jar being present in newly remaked 4,5,6. Which makes Lucas a real artist with moto "Take a good movie, make it over-FX-ed and stupid, repeat job with result except that 'Take a good movie' doesn't apply anymore because that movie already sucks"
I never claimed otherwise. I said that people who follow the advice of their ISP will have secure boxes.
So you agree with me, but I just made addition about ISP support not being up to the task mostly.
1. XP's firewall is enabled by default if you tell Windows that it's using a home connection (either DSL, Cable Modem, or Dial-Up Model.) If you tell it it's on a LAN, the firewall is off by default. XP SP2's is on by default regardless. What behavior would you recommend?
Always on. Running like this you can prevent more things than you imagine. Example: If LAN is active, you can block any traffic on port 25 that doesn't go on default SMTP. Two benefits, viruses either can't be sent or you easily track which computer is infected
2. "inside" traffic? What are you talking about? Why would Windows firewall off localhost? Or do you mean something different?
Previous example was just one of possibilities
Wrong. Is Windows as fast as a Linux install? I think everyone will agree that Windows boots faster than Linux, that's a no-brainer. You *might* have an install of Linux that runs faster than Windows in general, but if you do it's probably been custom-compiled for the specific machine or something similar. Either way, calling Windows "dog-slow" just proves my point-- you don't use Windows.
Boots??? All of my machines get rebooted only when some kernel gets updated. My notebook??? Tweaked services which I need boot just as fast ass XP. I never custom compile Linux. I've got bussines to run. For the last, I have to use Windows for some purposes. When you write crossplatform software that's one of the sorry dependancies. And when it comes to my Windows session, I browse the net and e-mail there too. Openoffice runs in both platforms. So, do I use Windows? unfortunatelly yes.
Oh, also, Office doesn't have any hooks into the OS. The Office and the Windows teams don't even talk to each other.
That's a new one. "Our Office suit is tightly integrated in OS, by using all of the features" or something like that. C'mon.
Ok, but the Windows install is easier to use for *everyone's* needs. It's not like making the OS easier to use for neophytes at the same time makes it hard to use for advanced users. Make that claim at a OS X user meeting and you'd be laughed out the door.
*everyone's* is not me. btw. most of my friends are Mac2Linux or Win2Linux converts. *OSX metting* Actualy I did that. First I was laughed then I was remembered. There is a lot of flaws in OSX. For one. OSX doesn't support CMYK printer profiles (cups is it's engine, and cups is yet to support CMYK profiles). There's no decent mailer. Running in semi administrative mode, et cetera. I'm prepared to go further if you'd like.
Are you saying that everyone who wants to play videogames on the PC doesn't have a clue? What about MMORPGs or flight simulators? Great, you own a PS2, but why can't you accept that, hey, maybe I *like* to break out my joystick and play Jane's WWII Fighters sometimes?
Good for you.
So now you're blaming Microsoft because some other developer ignored their suggestions and has buggy software
Developers can't write software without specs. Those were publised 3 months ago. Does that make that fortune tellers are the best coders???
this argument has absolutely nothing to do with Windows.
If there's no specs for OS, that makes it OS problem
The default install of Windows might suck, but it has the capability of being just as, or more, secure than Linux.
So securing Windows Install does require knowledge? I tought you said all is plug'n'play
As for not being a true multiuser system... who cares? I have a OS X box that's a "true multiuser system" and I never make use of more multiuser features than Windows has anyway.
So there is a SEWindows, (SE stands for NSA's Security Enhanced). No multiuser nee
Yeah, SW1,2,3 fucked up story line in such matter that not even one more movie and reedited 4,5,6 couldn't bring it back.
In parts 3.1, 3.2, 3.3 (or 7,8,9) you can expect that final truth will be revealed, Luke is in fact illegitimate son of Christel and Steven Carrington (here is the surprise twist that Lucas was carrefully preparing for last few years, Steven is supposed to be gay, but Lucas will show that all the facts were run by money play in Dinasty) and 3PI0 gets killed with can opener from sundays commercial. Oh, yeah Ewoks that were cut from part 6 are now replaced by alieans who resined their role in Alien vs. Predator sequel (Thay are fed up that they loose every time, and wait with thrill to replace Ewoks in now completely new "Aliens dance").

The truth is that anyone who follows the advice of Windows and their ISP can be secure with a minimum of effort
ISP can never secure your box. ISP has to be defaulted to be open at least for it's internal network, which is often large. And can't block too much, because ISP could loose customers. Most of ISP's don't know shit about securing your box, because common ISP technical support mostly isn't qualified for that. I must admit that I was surprised once, when I talked to a guy on a level. It just turned out that he was from other department and temporally filling the gap in support.
With Service Pack 2, where Windows enforces it and doesn't just suggest it, it's even easier. The Linux community is out-of-touch...
1. Linux doesn't suggest firewall, it is enabled by default 2. So, having firewall that works in both directions is out-of-touch? Windows fw blocks only outside traffic, inside is not checked.
The fact is that Windows XP is actually a really good operating system...
Every fool has it's own horse! me? I got Linux
it's faster than Linux
Yeah, Windows starts Office faster, otherwise everything is dog slow
it's stable
Me and you obviously live on different planet. On our planet Windows is like a magnet to viruses, spyware and other malware.
it's a hell of a lot easier to use
Not for my needs. I agree that everyone without a clue what to do with his computer or someone who just wants to play games it is easier. But then again I have a clue and I have PS2.
it has a better security model than Linux.
Better security model as in....???? Windows hasn't got even real multi user environment. Two or three months ago M$ posted article how to write software for multiuser environment. To get a clue what I'm talking about. Start photoshop, Swithch user, Start another photoshop. Photoshop preferences blow, Ctrl-Alt-Shift become your friends (either that or that's $35 for Adobe support). This is the same tragedy as in most of Windows software.
Firewall-Like-One-Way-Toy was introduced with SP2???
So much talked-about.Net doesn't mean more security. Otherwise Java would be most secure until now. It's just runtime controlled software, nothing else. Controlled software is just as secure as environment and runtime engine is.
Windows is just getting with security where Linux was 5 years ago. For your information. Linux is moving away again with SELinux to be enabled by default.
And now the obligatory: "But of course this post opposed the Slashbot groupthink and will be modded down.";)
No, your comment is just stupid, that's all
(I think people say that because those posts always get modded up.)
Your comment is too stupid to be modded up, even if you beg as you do.
No, it suggests taht Germans should reconsider their vote about patents.
Last time they voted German representatives voted for the patents (after all their talk how they are against them, they were satisfied with few minor corrections of original proposition and voted YES)
btw. If I remember correctly Eric Raymond said that those little changes would do even more damage as original proposal
"Computer make me something, I don't know what but you understand don't you?"
The only smart things that computer does are those that computer knows the question. If question is not correct and answer in his database then computer isn't as smart as you'd think. Let say chess, extensive database and one question only, what to do in this position.
I don't know how smart systems would react to problems that would arise, like hdd crashed or similiar, but I know one thing as soon as job is becoming limited it's price goes higher, and customer relaying on smart systems would pay again the same ammount of money for less job done.
btw. As I pointed out database would be needed for this purpose but who will fill it? It's not only the question of system, there's a software layer also
Even Spamm RBL looks good on paper. Works the same as this one and it backfires.
E-mail servers are trying to use SPF now (RBLs have been proclaimed as "TOO MANY FALSE POSITIVES, AND TOO LITTLE TRUE NEGATIVES"), which in fact is solution from the other side (in my opinion even worster, because it demands to many admin control for SPF to work as it should)

So much talked-about
Windows is just getting with security where Linux was 5 years ago. For your information. Linux is moving away again with SELinux to be enabled by default.
And now the obligatory: "But of course this post opposed the Slashbot groupthink and will be modded down."
No, your comment is just stupid, that's all
(I think people say that because those posts always get modded up.)
Your comment is too stupid to be modded up, even if you beg as you do.
You mean like http://www.bitrock.com/ ????
No, it suggests taht Germans should reconsider their vote about patents.
Last time they voted German representatives voted for the patents (after all their talk how they are against them, they were satisfied with few minor corrections of original proposition and voted YES)
btw. If I remember correctly Eric Raymond said that those little changes would do even more damage as original proposal
Uncomparable.
BMW works and goes pretty fast, while Apple (company ) only makes patents and their computer with their system goes dog slow mode by default.
You've got to make a better example, but please don't insult BMW or Mercedes by comparing them to overpriced and overbullshited Apple computer
Somebody watched Star trek once to often.
