Like first if I offended you (your answer souded like that), I'm sorry.
Would be nice to throw them together as you said, but most of the companies bought one to it's money limits and ITs were learning on them (those times were real starts of comuting in our country) to have them up'n'running not to be tuned to it's limits.
btw. I agree with your post, don't take as offence. But capable administrators in public sectors are very rare and there are limits to money spending on computers just as original poster said.
And yes, I'm scared that I remember all that.:)) was that before or after Jesus was crucified???
Very rare like in: most of better ones have their own company just because they vere not satisfied with salary in public sector, Don't know for other coutries, here it is like that
That I can answer you from my experience with some of my customers.
People are filled with scepticism about technology they don't know well. And cluster is not a common thing to imagine for some common IT, which is more or less uneducated (based that the same ITs have been there from VAX times). Mostly they can imagine up their own level of understanding and talking them out is very hard thing to try. I tryed that, but now I just don't bother, if someone want's to be hammered, well... let him be.
Linux on the desktop still barely has the functionality of Windows 3.1.
Win3.1 still has a more tightly integrated clipboard Even Windows XP hasn't got middle click copy/paste, so tightly or not tightly integrated clipboard, Linux has better
a good printing system Looking at my printed documents I expect some example why linux should have bad printing system
excellent screen fonts Win 3.1????? My god on which planet do you live? Even XP Cleartype is bad. My desktop computer fonts are just ughly, I must admit right size fonts on my notebook look beatifull (but they look bad when they are too small), while on CRT they're just ughly. My notebook has 1400x1050 and 15", and XP desktop looks nice when set Cleartype and 112DPI, smaller fonts get too blurry
no crazy sound managers I agree they're crazy, but sound with alsa is just better than same computer on windows, but I can say that for SB Live only
, etc etc etc. I agree and I can answer all of them
Do not read if you don't want to read just some stupid example reasons why some system is not good enough. Not trolling, just showing stupid example that some./ users write to take on some system. btw. this aren't real reasons for someone to hate OS, they're just annoyances
Let's take on Windows. Ok, now try something.
1. Get a load of pictures and movies. Rename them so they'll be without extension. Open explorer, what are those unknown types? On every modern desktop real MIME type exists, meaning Windows is not a real desktop OS.
2. Uninstall softwares trough Add/Remove Why the hell are they still there (at least most of them). Every decent OS should know how to install/uninstall software, meaning Windows is not a real OS
3. XP Example. Open My Computer. Delete Explorer icon, press F5, he's back even my Mozilla icon (swaped that one instead of E icon) in Start Menu changed it's path to explorer, every real OS should allow to change browser, haven't tryed it with latest SP
4. XP. Name of user contains country-local character, rename user without local character Why the hell do I have now one user with two locked home folders, and my desktop contains always different files, but never all of them. Every OS should handle user after rename, meaning Windows is not even OS.
I could go on and on, just shut up and don't talk stupid things. Hell, I could do the same about GNOME, KDE, macosx(this one I really hate, so I should come up with preety good excuses).
but I'd rather hear some intelligent reasons why anyone would choose to use Evolution over other faster, cheaper, more stable email clients
faster... we could argue about that, but let's say everyone has it's favorite horse. cheaper... since when is outlook cheaper than $0, does M$ now pay for usage???? more stable... 1.4... no crash for me yet no virus... outlook is more or less,...hmm, yeah, well,... inviting viruses???? beautiful look... ok, I hate MacOS X and photo icons, while MacOS was beautiful beautiful fonts... my ximian desktop rocks in that field
hey, thx! I might try that one (but not on that network, and not on my_computers=linux=no_need). I didn't noticed that.
But still 250 not necessary licences (if it's free I apologize I didn't looked at it yet) is a bit too much, don't you think;) It's better to proclaim not wanted adware for illegal.
For now I'm solving problem by installing mozilla and disabling network access to explorer and it works great. Wrong proxy, no access for explorer to outside network, no spyware;)
I'm just looking for some outlook alternative now and my job will become fun:)
hope, this answer will get to you. Thanks, but I know this gradeschool techniques. But I'm actualy administering somewhere few over 250 computers. This is acceptable for home usage not company.
Using this technique, well not a chance I live long enough
Start... Try running that on 250 computers.
adware and/or zonealarm. Neither one can't prevent spyware, adware just removes it after being installed (try running it on all computers), and zonealarm is bugging users and preventing connection, and doing exactly what I said I don't wan't
All those Gator like spyware pieces of software polute system. I don't care about the adds, but I'm seriously having problems with performance on machines that are condemed to be not knowingly used for advertising means more than anything else.
At least they should provide a way where user chooses his advertising agent like selecting your default browser in control panel. If it is selected then it us running, if it's not then "go away". That kind of agents would be pleasant more than annoying.
And until that time when everyone can select his default agent, they should be treated as illegal.
No trolling, it's truth only. I see it every day. What part of what I said isn't true???? Please, correct me if I'm wrong, I like to be corrected, it's enough FUD on this world even without me.
As for my English, yes it's bad, at least writing, it's my fourth language and sadly,... not enough important part of my life depends on it (at least writing skills). So if my writing made you feel some kind of terrible pain,.... OK, it didn't hurt me at all;)
I wondered the same as I was reading his (authors of the article) bitchin' about constant look and feel:)... There's no constant look and feel in Windows, where the hell has he seen it.
Problem with that updates is that you can't make some updates if you don't wan't some of them you might not be able install other ones.
btw. XP updates are automatical and made as stupid as possible. You get a zillion of Updates listed in Add/Remove software but no info what it was updated and most when it was updated. In more then one try when you uninstall one of them system crashes with no recovery possible. At least the recovery that lies on the system CD should not be called recovery, it's just a base install over (being surprised that I lost most of working applications everytime I run that sucker).
My notebook with XP (mainly used just for battery software) is not so constant. When you install Office 2003 beta the look they provide doesn't feel like a windows look. Rounded toolbars with ughly icons (ok, bad drawn icons are consistent with interface:). Yuck.
So, no feel of constant interface, basing on this review this must be bad.
Power of Linux desktop will be mainly in corporation use at first, and Apple is just too expensive to be used for that purpose.
But bussiness desktop is still a desktop, so... Desktop market counts home and company desktop computers.
Home desktop computer figures would be different probably, but that second opinion raises question, if it has some sense to use different OS at home and at office. Second favorable look in that direction is Joe User. Joe User likes system that he's used to. And if that's Win then Win, Linux then Linux, OSX then OSX.
C'mon, what you're benchmarking is top speed of two cars which one is faster. But the second one has to have nitro and turbo turned off because it would be unfair since the first racing car doesn't have them.
HT Processor is still ONE processor and top speed is still top speed.
Question is, will M$ continue to develop MSOffice for Mac. If not you're on the same horse.
no graphics professional would use Gimp instead of Photoshop
I do, at least the portion that needs hand drawn images. Trouble is, Photoshop is usable for high end and printing, I don't do that, except if hand drawn image in RGB is considered high end.
There isn't an equivalent of Illustrator or Freehand
It is, question is again what is your final destination. In fact I preffer sodipodi as strange as it sounds, simple and usable but I must admit it's not quite there yet, still a lot missing (and I mean A LOT). But what I most like by Gimp or Sodipodi is UI (I know people are screaming for MDI, but I like just that). But then again, if you look at me I own two G4's with Adobe Collection, but that just isn't it. Maybe Adobe Software is just too clumsy and too much of everything.
Compare this to the Mac. Everything works the way you expect it
Yeah right, like I don't own two of them.
Now my bashing. OSX hasn't got any suitable e-mail software. Browser is incomplete (IE no more, Mozilla is crashing too much, at least that what I tryed, and I'm avoiding Apple as I can)
Oh, and by the way... saying "fsckin'" instead of "fucking?" Not funny. Never was funny
Who said I intended to be funny? I just avoid words like that because some forums check words you write and autoassign troll to that posts. So I do it automaticaly, you see I never post as AC.
btw. Do you have a 19" rack mount closet at home? It is a PERSONAL DESKTOP COMPUTER. And to go to basics. 1.Personal (for office and home use) 2.Desktop (on top of the desk) 3.Computer (never works as it should:) take it as joke not trolling
I have an MDD G4 with a SuperDrive, a CDRW, and four hard drives in it, and I'm glad that I have those options.
Either one of them is external, or you've got one disk over another which is not good. btw. G4 is much slower when two disks are on the same bus.
Dude, don't be a fucking idiot. The machine isn't meant for use on a desk. It's meant for use in a 19" rack
no, I'm not a fsckin' idiot. The Power Mac G5 is the worldâ(TM)s fastest personal computer:) I guess all of us have 19" rackmount closet at home, I mean it is personal computer isn't it.
And about fastest, they always said that but never did it. But that's my opinion
That isn't very hard to succed. Even some cars run more quietly than those dual G4's:)
easy-access pull-down door
Hard to access devices. I think everybody agrees that most PC cases are far more sophisticated to open than G(x)'s. At least my case is. Swap cdrom or disk is a matter of not even half minute and no screws (oops, there are two on cdrom).
btw. There is no place for second CDROM, I guess Apple either hopes that people have big tables for their computer and accessories. Or there will be upgrade like it was when they made last model where they've been advertising additional space for two CDROM in one big column of their advertisement.
Like first if I offended you (your answer souded like that), I'm sorry.

Yes they should be charged
8% total installed base????
wow, the stuff you smoke??? please, pass some to me
No. You can actualy see that Cinelerra uses different widget set on screenshots

It would seem it's time to start with CDCopyFest

It will be in version 1.1. Just as PDF export for windows and swf export.
You can download beta2 and see for your self.
By te way, speaking of constant interface.
My notebook with XP (mainly used just for battery software) is not so constant. When you install Office 2003 beta the look they provide doesn't feel like a windows look. Rounded toolbars with ughly icons (ok, bad drawn icons are consistent with interface:). Yuck.

I was expecting review of Linux, not a review how to turn Linux into M$Win. This was not a review of Linux but review of Windows emulator
Constant interface he's bitchin... well my Ximian desktop is preety constant:)
Even Redhat is constant at least Gnome.
That won't be a problem to achieve.
