I think you are glossing over the fact that the Reagan debt is still with us and was financed by poor short term loans. This is equivalent to buying 3 houses on credit cards. It is extremely short sighted and dangerous. I leave it up to the reader to decide whether the first Bush recession was caused by an abandonment of Reaganomics or the fruition of it. Clinton understood that the Reagan debt, which is still with us, had to be paid before it destroyed the economy altogether. The boom we had may have been even better had the government not been saddled with such enormous debt(half the taxes paid by individuals was being used to pay the interest on the debt).

I find it more than a little frightening that a failed businessman who is obviously more than a little stupid is sitting at that desk. The only comfort I have is that his daddy and Dick are the ones who are really running the show. But then again, they're the same Corporate lacky's who help people like Enron out.

But most people don't care(or understand) as long as the bread and circuses continue.

Whatever's illegal in Durham NC (where the company is incorporated) is forbidden by the TOS, plus porn.
That's pretty inconsistent since turning away customers because of their religious beliefs is illegal in North Carolina. It's also extremely un-american and I'm pretty sure it violates federal law as well. You guys could have you pants sued off for that one and I for one will be letting some people know that there is a ripe target available for a religious discrimination lawsuit. I hope your legal team is ready.

In Durham, North Carolina? You must be kidding. Isn't it illegal for a corporation to discriminate based on religion? Why on earth would corrupt Texas oil men want to promote fuel efficient vehicles? Since most of the crude oil comes from overseas the big american oil companies make money based on how much oil they refine. If production or consumption slows, OPEC will simply raise the price of oil and keep the same profit margin. In fact it's in their best interest to slow production so they can keep the golden goose alive as long as possible.

Ok that covers Dick and Dumbya. Now as to government momentum as a whole is concerned. I have been starting to think that perhaps the strategy that the US government is taking is to use up all foriegn oil as soon as possible. The OPEC nations(sans venezuela) are all despotic regimes. As such they tend to spend a lot of money suppressing their people and retaining power. None of these countries seem to be planning for a future without oil. If the oil stoped flowing tomorrow, what would these countries do for income? Would the US be interested in holding Israel back any longer? All ambivalence about Israel would surely vanish and our "friendly" relations with the Saudis would evaporate as quickly. Let's look at the Saudi situation for a moment. People usually think the Saudis are extremely rich but what most people don't realize is that Saudi Arabia has been running a huge deficit.

The Saudi royal family has had to deal with a great deal of opposition in the last few years and it has been increaingly difficult to appease or suppress the public. Certainly their dealings with the west do not go over well with saudi subjects, yet their diplomats continue to tell us that they have their people's support. It's clear that they have conflicting desires, they need our money but they would also like to cut our throats. Likewise I think the US government is more interested in keeping the region only marginally stable, enough to keep the middle eastern leaders preoccupied while we buy up all the oil. And convince them to spend their profits on our weapons, to use on each other of course.

I find it odd that roughly 99% of the population feels this way. Most people abhor the thought of cloning people yet somehow feel that if the technique is perfected, everyone will use it. Does this mean they secretly want to have clones for their own children?

It reminds me of a survey once down about drug use. People were asked, "if drugs became legal tomorrow, would you use them?" 90% said no. Then when asked, "If drugs became legal tomorrow, would your neighbor use them?" 70% said yes.
