How should people know if a given network is for free use or not? We should have some kind of a flag on a WIFI connection to tell people it is available for free use. Like say, advertising that it has no encryption. Oh wait....

I've learned that there really is something powerful about combining several generalized apps (like in bash with pipes and such). Apple seems to be catching on to this idea more with their "Automator" in the newest OSX. Windows still doesn't let you combine things in this way, so the solution to most problems is to download (or write) another specialized program.

A good example of how our minds fill in visual information is optical illusions such as the dragon illusion. You may have already seen it as it has been making the email/blog rounds. It's a "hollow face" illusion, where the brain assumes depth information based on the familiarity of the face. We don't often see concave faces, so our brain incorrectly assumes the face is convex. There is a PDF on the dragon illusion page you can print and see this for yourself. It's a very striking effect.

    Absolutely. Not easily done though.

This is kind of vague. I assume you are referencing teachings such as "money is the root of all evil", etc. I know many Christians who have given up money and careers to serve others instead.

    - Openly critize the leaders of your religion and texts

Huh? What should they be criticized for? Or do you mean examine to see if they are telling the truth? Or are you saying there are a lot of corrupt leaders? Not really sure what you are getting at here.

    - Refrain from any anger at any time except in the case when someone is profiting from your religion

I assume you are referring to Jesus driving money changers out of the temple. The money changes had moved into an area of the temple that was to be used for worship. If I recall were also involved in business practices contrary to Jewish law. These money changers were fellow Jews who knew the law and should have known better, but instead they chose to turn God's house into a "den of robbers". They were not only profiting, but openly dishonering God in the temple and preventing others from worship.

    - Roll out windows updates with SUS or a similar product. Your internet gateway should obviously be firewalled off as much as possible.

    - Restrict local user permissions as much as possible as a lot of malware gets installed by ignorant users with local admin rights.

    - Run virus/spyware scanning. If it detects anything, wipe the machine.

Remember that a firewall is not a magical solution. You need multiple layers of network and client level security. This is especially important in a lab where more than one person uses any given workstation. The ideal thing in that situation would be to use something like deepfreeze to wipe the machine before each person uses it in order to ensure the previous user left nothing malicious behind.
