I think you really need to ask yourself if doing things the way you are now is absolutely necessary.

America has prospered for 200 years before the advent of email and cell phones. Even with high-speed access to the internet, there is no substitute for browsing my university's library.

Sure, things like email may have made some things easier to do. Unfortunately, many people have come to believe that they are absolute necessities. The fact is that they are not.

I would suggest that anyone who is constantly using cell phones, email, blackberries, palm pilots, and other devices needs to step back and simplify his life. Very often people become so involved in their day-to-day routines that they forget what is really important. Stress is a deadly killer that can be prevented! It's a matter of priorities.

If you're a college student, chances are that you can get Microsoft products very inexpensively. I'm a grad student at the University of Michigan, and I bought a copy of Office 2k for $35 a few years ago. IIRC, the price hasn't risen, and a complete (i.e. not just an upgrade) version of WinXP Pro is $45. The first place to check with is your university's computer sales department or just check with the helpdesk and have them refer you to the right people. Even if your school doesn't have a deal with M$, there are some web sites that act as clearinghouses to sell students most popular software at the manufacturer's student prices.

Apple's iTunes and iPod are leading examples of responsible, successful digital music solutions that are embraced by both consumers and the music industry.

I'm going to receive my PhD in economics this May at the University of Michigan, which is probably ranked somewhere between 10 and 15 nowadays. I'm not looking for an academic job, but I've heard from my classmates who are that they haven't been doing very well.
