Integration is good when there is a reason to do it, and that reason is not to achieve a monopoly illegaly.

  3. The future is BRIGHT on The GNOME Roadmap · · Score: 4, Insightful

After reading this roadmap, I'm left with nothing but warm feelings of loveliness.

First off, working with Mozilla Firebird is a stroke of genius. There are a heck of a lot of man hours being put in on that project, we should utilise them rather than recovering ground already trod upon by the lizard.

Secondly, integrating both Ximian, Gnome-DB, calendering and address book tightly into Gnome could be a great leap towards a working Dashboard project. This alone looks like propelling Gnome into pole position - it's a genuinely innovative feature, not yet seen on any other desktop, and only hinted at by Microsoft so far. Beating Microsoft to the punch would certainly be a coup.

The other really encouraging thing is the following paragraph:

    --
One area in which GNOME has lagged behind other desktop operating
systems like Windows and Mac OS X is tight integration with hardware.
GNOME is working with the freedesktop.org community to make
    plug-and-play hardware management just work.
    --

For me this highlights that Gnome has moved well into position as the premier Linux desktop, and rather than concentrating on what KDE are doing, they are focusing on bigger fish :) Looks like all those Sun corporate installations helped a little bit! Also, the close work the Gnome community is putting in alongside freedesktop.org is a *very* good thing. Integrating the desktop with the hardware is something Windows has been able to (alledgedly) do since '95, and it's about time we had that too! New users certainly need to be able to plug their digicam in and have it "just work", and if this can all be incorporated with Nautilus and the CD burner module, transferring pictures could be as easy as insert camera, insert blank CD and click Go. Gnome could fast be approaching Apple levels of usability!

    I want my 2.8!

"Now I just wish that Evolution would be properly integrated with KDE. They are doing it with OOo..."

I seriously doubt that's going to happen. For one, Evolution 2 will have parts of C# in it, and we all know how KDE feel about C#...

I see this announcement as yet another nail in the KDE coffin. Novell will want to push Mono big style and are keen to switch Evolution to Mono fully to lock out Sun, who obviously will not include a direct competitor to Java in their desktop distribution. The side effect is that this also locks out KDE, because as witnessed on the KDE developer forums recently, the attitudes of most KDE developers seem to be anti-sematic MS Hating idealists. If Evolution will not work without C#, that's yet ANOTHER library you have to include with KDE - starting to get bloaty now huh?

Coupled with the cross platform for-profit app development licensing restrictions, *and* the Ximian connector now being released for free, this spells a big win for Gnome, and Ximian specifically, and an opportunity missed for KDE. When you also lastly consider that Evolution is almost certainly the most powerful, widely used and efficent free GUI mail app, you really have to fear for the future of KDE and their now apparently hobbyist desktop.

But unfortunately, being able to display wordart better than openoffice isn't a deal maker, and especially isn't going to make me choose paid for software over free software. However, if they were to suddenly enable you to import all your VB macros with a Spreadsheet, then I'd happily hand my card number over there and then. Unfortunately, until then, this really just smacks as a "me too" product, and I can't see it taking much of openoffice's market share.

  11. Re:Why is it "intuitive"? on Interview: Xandros and KDE · · Score: 1

The problem in adaption is not when an interface is VASTLY different to what the user is used to - users can actually adapt to new interfaces fairly rapidly. What really throws spanners in the works is half backed clones of interfaces - ie. a Windows 95 interface that looks like the original, but does not FUNCTION the same way as the original - even down to the little thing, as menus not displaying the same options you'd expect to find in the native interface.

In my opinion, this is why KDE are barking up the wrong tree - unless it works EXACTLY like the interface it's ahem... "inspired" by, what's the point? Why not throw the rules out of the window (pun intended) and create a brand new, intuitive desktop environment. Can it really be *that* hard??

Actually, you'll find that the KDE desktop project in general is very much like this. It's always seemed to strike a rather uneasy balance - the look and feel are mainly based on Windows, yet the icons seem to be more Apple like. This is going to be very confusing indeed for a migrating user.

I, too used to be this unenlightened. I used to carry my Nokia 7650 around with me everywhere. And then one day, I lost it, and it forced a total rethink of the way I view phones. Did I really want to hunt around for a camera/organiser/games machine etc etc etc? In the end I plumped for a Xelibri (http://www.xelibri.com) - it doesn't do a whole lot, but does everything I need it to do - calls, sms, polyphonic ring tones and an alarm :)

I liken it to digital watches in the 80s. I remember everyone owning a watch with a calculator, some with thermometers, but now if you look at digital watches, they rarely are chock full of features, instead choosing to look good. That's what I want from my phone, something that looks good rather than something that is chock full of 100s of features I never use.

And, no, I'm not an anti-Linux zealot. In fact, I found my switch to a deliberately featureless, yet entirely sexy phone oddly paralleled my change from Windows to Linux a while back :)
