Isn't the professor presenting a Straw man argument here? Nobody would ever compare an encyclopedia to a long course of hands on training and intensive work.

Professor Lichtenstein (or Lichy to her friends?) assumes that all of us blindly trust wikipedia. I don't. I don't know anybody who hasn't doubted the truth of a wikipedia article. She already knows the solution - don't let students cite wikipedia, so its hard to see what her problem is?
Is she mad that people are contributing their knowledge for free, while she expects to be paid? What a terrible blow Wikipedia has inflicted on our poor starving experts.
Again, these fans need to suck it up. They have no right to complain if the movie version of a video game is bad. Many of these fans have an unhealthy obsession with this issue, and need to stop. They have no right to demand that the filmmaker stop making movies. Regardless if Uwe Boll brought up or not (and in the history of him versus fanboys, he probably didn't) by signing that position people are asking that he stops making movies.
Why?
If they love their video game franchises write to the people who OWN the rights and ask them to pretty please not to sell them to any production company that uses Uwe Boll as director.
But guess what. They'll sell the rights anyway, because they don't care about the fans either. They are about the money. Filmmaking has always been about the money. The only way these sad fanboys can affect any change is voting with their dollar. It's the only vote that counts.
This kind of hatred over a filmmaker who's creating something is really sad, pathetic and unhealthy. No, his movies might not be very good, and yes they are in fact terrible, but they're hardly the worst films ever made unless you've never seen 90% of the horror\musical genre, or anything made for youtube.
Filmmaking was and never ever has been a democracy. This idea of writing petitions to DEMAND that he stop making movies that you don't ever have to watch or think about is pathetic. 99% of movies are released weekly around the world that you'll never ever know about, simply because you don't care enough. His movies aren't mass-marketed, they're not shoved in your face on TV or fast food restaurants. The only people who are shouting about Uwe Boll loud enough for ANYONE to hear are the people who hate him. Stop hating him, stop shouting about him, and he'll likely go away a lot faster. In fact, if he had been ignored like most other filmmakers he may have gone a long time ago.
No member of the public has a say in who gets to make movies. It's not a democracy. If they want to vote, vote with their dollar. If enough people still pay to see the movies, such that the filmmaker is still in work, then nobody has a right to demand that he goes, except his business partners. That's life. Suck it up. There are bigger injustices in the world to worry about.
Signing a petition is just hilarious and pathetic, and will probably have the opposite effect people intend. This kind of hatred is unhealthy. Have some perspective people. He's not answerable to any of you. Fanboys need to stop kidding themselves into thinking that they have any say in what filmmakers do. They don't. Filmmaking has been a business since its inception, and still is. Even if there were a million signatures he's under no obligation to do anything that a bunch of deluded movie geeks "demand" of him.
He could make a movie where he prints those signatures out, laughs at them, tears them up, and posts the resulting video on youtube. Don't fanboys ever see that the more they are outraged at something inconsequential like this the more ridiculous and hilarious they appear to the rest of us? Pick your battles.
This is an outrage. Apart from the obvious and genuine privacy concerns here this would do the very opposite to what the ignorant Gary Pugh is expecting. Hasn't he ever heard of a Self fulling prophecy?
There are many proven psychological reasons why this would cause a vast amount of harm to the development of these children
This article especially illustrates published studies that showed the effect of positive and negative expectation has on children's academic performance
This might seem like a stupid question, but why would there be latency with a satellite link? With radio waves traveling at the speed of light what difference is 175 miles going to make?
I always thought the reason for latency was a combination of signals going through slower copper wires and being processed by various routers and servers along the way.
Can someone clear this up?

I have never looked forward to a computer game before in my life. Their Cross pollination implementation sounds absolutely revolutionary in not just gaming, but computing in general.
Only a game that gives you that much control over life can satisfy my ego.
Humour is my forté. However, humour about the inner workings of anti-virus and mal-ware companies is still on my to-do list. Know any good stand up albums I should listen to? I hear Symantec Kinison is really good.:D
And; there is something to be said about the first person who responds to this comment, and balks at all that I have said here! And that would demonstrate why these problems are here in the first place.
Well there is something immoral about YOU to be said when you're presupposing that there's something wrong with someone who disagrees with your post before they even post their disagreement!. Are you sure you want to take the moral high ground?
Do you raise your kids with the same attitude. "Well here's my opinion, and if anyone balks at anything I've said, no matter what their reason, it demonstrates why society sucks"?
Let's hope your kids are more open minded than you are, and if they're like most kids with parents like you they've probably just learned to hide their drinking and drugtaking a lot better. It would certainly be easy with a parent who's already made their mind up and sticks their fingers in their ears to avoid hearing what they may not want to hear.
Oh get a clue. Those artists are happy to sign their rights away in exchange for fame and money, otherwise they wouldn't do it. The choice is theres. Many of them choose not to, which is why you get independant labels.
Because legally, we're not allowed to do that? The US is region one, Australia is region four. Most people have multi-region players, but my understanding is they've been illegal since we got a so-called free trade agreement with the US a few years back. Both options are piracy.
You're very very wrong. Region locked players are ILLEGAL in Australia, not the other way around.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_region_code But, hey, don't let the facts get in the way of getting something for nothing. Any justification, correct or otherwise, eh?
Why should I pay to pirate, when I can pirate for free?
It seems neither option, neither paying for it not getting it for free will stop you from whinging. Will you ever stop crying?
Have I actually tried what exactly? I'm actually confused by your one line rant because I have no idea what you're trying to say except for your dig at my "real life experience" (when you know nothing about what real life experience I do or don't have)....and it's modded insightful?. Probably by some buddy of yours sitting next to you in a computer lab or at work. Typical!
You automatically assumed I was making a dig at you. Perhaps I was hopeful that you had some real life experience with an RIAA artist, and was encouraging you to share it. My comment was intentionally ambiguous, yet, you automatically assumed the negative. Then you suggested a "buddy" of mine modded it insightful. I have no idea who modded it up, but if you can't believe somebody would want to do that, then enjoy your fantasy.
Given the way you react to a rather benign comment, are you really surprised no RIAA artist wants to reply to you? That is, if you've actually bothered to write to them in the first place...
Debate the topic? Do you realize Evolution vs Creationism is undebatable, since Creationists have no evidence?? It's a Fact vs Belief debate, where the people on the Belief side won't accept fact.
Its as pointless as a Round Earth vs Flat Earth argument. In fact, people shouldn't even be debating these Creationist scumbags, since it just gives the false impression that their opinion carries any relevance to the origin of Life.
Also, As a Creationist, are you really in a position to determine what is or is not "dumb"? Come on man, you realize you're on a science and technology forum. You sure you're not just trolling?
Possibly, but it sounds like she doesn't want to go near wikipedia unless she's getting paid for her time.

The only solution.
Silly posters on Slashdot, Earth 2 posted this story a SECOND TIME on the front page of Earth 1's slashdot.

I read that comic too a few weeks ago, and did some research to try and verify it, but couldn't find any significant evidence.
Anyone find any?

I agree. If you're not growing, you're dying.
RIAA's business model is outdated and needless
Please suggest an alternative working business model that can compete with free music, so that we may implement it immediately, oh Enlightened One.
We await with eagerness your wise words, and further revelations of the Truth

Stop whining about how they're forcing you into piracy, and just buy it over the internet like a normal person.

Have you actually tried this? It would be nice to bash the RIAA with some actual real life experience, other than arm chair musings.
I am very poorly paid and have ZERO disposable income, but I promise, I'll treat you like a king. Deal? :)
I hope you go to jail. You deserve it. For a long time. Hahahaha>
When, it's in fact, your MediaDefender buddies who go to jail, they'll be the butt pirates. Oh how we'll laugh.
