I just don't understand the wrath against Apple. They make products that millions of people love. They are making money hand over fist. If you don't like it, don't buy it. What's so difficult about that?

One thing to remember about social networking sites and blogs is that they allow people to broadcast an "edited" version of life. All the good things and none of the bad. The power of mere omission can be phenomenal (just look at politicians and PR people - they get paid to do this.)

Everyone has problems. Everyone has insecurities. Some are better at hiding it than others. Personally I have found it very liberating to realise that I don't have to be 100% warts and all honest with people. If I'm at a party and a friend asks how I'm doing I say,"Oh I'm fine, how are you?" Maybe I will tell them something good that happened to me that day, or some good news about a mutual friend. No one likes to be around someone who dumps all their misery on them.

The problem is that being selfish and doing everything you believe necessary for your own advancement can backfire. One can easily end up been isolated and left in the cold. In my experience, those who have taken their time to help others, establish trust and rally people around their own interests do better in the long run. You have to give a little to get a little. Selfishness is a huge turnoff.

My question is: Why are people so vocal in opposition to Apple's walled garden? Where were they for the last decade, through the XBOX and Playstation and GameCube/Wii? Why does the opposition today seem to be only against Apple?

I do think places like Slashdot are a bit of echo chamber, and the perceived outrage seems far larger than it really is.

The reason we are still talking about iPhones, iPads and iTouches is that the mass public have voted with their cash and declared them great products. If they weren't we would not be having this discussion. If there was indeed the magnitude of opposition you suggest, then Apple would be having trouble shifting their products and suffering on the markets. Obviously that isn't happening - quite the opposite in fact.

Speaking personally, my iPhone 3G is the best phone I have ever owned, and I will be getting the iPhone 4 soon after it launches. I am a photographer so I use it as a convenient portfolio when I am on the go. Sure, I take my A3 book into meetings with prospective clients, but I can't take it everywhere all the time. The new display looks really interesting, and I look forward to seeing my work on it.

  19. Re:ZFS on Best Solutions For Massive Home Hard Drive Storage? · · Score: 1

I built a ZFS file server last year using OpenSolaris. I can't speak for FreeBSD, but it sounds like you had a much more fruitful experience than I did.

OpenSolaris is very picky when it comes to hardware and device drivers. It reminds me of trying to install Linux twelve years ago. There is a Hardware Compatibility List but it is behind the times and poorly maintained. The problem is that Solaris was developed for a relatively small pool of certified enterprise grade hardware. Trying to get consumer grade hardware working can sometimes involve buying one product after another until you find a model that works, no matter how well you think you have researched it.

I had a nightmare trying to get my Intel PRO/1000 Gigabit networking card working properly. It worked fine for a year, then suddenly suffered massive performance loss after I upgrading the OS. The whole saga is documented here. It got to the point where I was monitoring network traffic using WireShark and buying new switches. In the end I gave up, installed Ubuntu Server and set up an XFS software RAID. All my problems suddenly vanished - I had a lightning fast file server again!

So I literally wasted several solid weeks fighting OpenSolaris. I also wasted a good amount of money on upgrades that in the end were unnecessary. Even the best minds on their support forums were unable to help (and believe me, I gave them enough traces, WireShark dumps and analysis!) This is a shame, because ZFS itself was wonderful to use - it was just the rest of the system that let it down.
