this is completely worthless read. IT just throws out a bunch of buzz words and make no sense at all.
"Buoyed by so much processing power, consumers will be able to interact with these worlds without worrying about hackers, viruses, or lost connections."
What the hell are they talking about? I want to say some clever comment but I am not so much stupider having read that first sentence of the paragraph that I can't think of a thing to say.
ture I guess but thats not all your X-box can do nor is it all the value of a moded x-box... a more accurate statment is a blank CD cost 15 c. and whether thouse games are worth that or not should be the question. I think so.
I am still waiting for simPimp. . .
just think of the possibilities.. all the choices that have to be made, like how much crack to give to your hoes(you want to keep them on the job but you don't want them to overdose), whether to hire protection(you don't want to waste money if you don't have to),or if you fuck your own hoes are you loosing potential business(good question) what kind of system you have set up with cretin cops,(keeping them satisfied by whatever means necessary) to leave your corner in peace. how many hoes can you personally manage before needing to outsource(if you save up a great deal of money you can eventually run a hor house) and then manage rooms and what not, and when you go supper big time, you run a high class escort service to big time business clients.
I see a recurring theme that... we will never fill up that much space . . . and other people being equally naive saying we will find a way to fill it up with video, music or images.
The good comments accept that we really have no idea what kind of things will be stored on a 120TB drive, but the idea that the only thing worth storing is digital versions of today's mass media is silly. With the advent of nanotechnology, there will be a need to store digital versions of material objects something that probably will take up some space, plus there is a lot of material objects out there. And what about personal brain backup(talk about your killer app), that's got to take up some storage and Advanced AI stuff will take up quite a bit as well. I mean if you can't download a monkey brain play with the genetics of it and run it in an emulated full virtual environment, what good are computers anyway.
when are they going to stop messing around and realease a x86 based poket pc. it can't be too far away given the size of the small motherboards. a open based x86 poket pc I would definitly be into that:)
if you think about there are two aproches to content protection. 1. certen media files are athoenticated must be athenticated to play on all devices. 2. all media must be athorized to play on all devices.
option 2 is serveral orders of magnituded worse then option 1. with option 2 there would no longer be indpendent thought or sharing of ideas, no free speach, no indpendent films or audio, that was not approved by some organization whos perpose was making money or worse yet governing. It is very clear which the movie and audio industry is shooting for. If this comes to pass I will be a bit spprized that they where able to pull it off and take more power over the people information then we ever imagined. I don't think it will happen though because of its implications, but option 1 will and is coming to pass as we speek.
hehe this could not happen for any number of reasons, first most non-mainstream artists are doing this already in one way or another. . ie mp3.com, the mainstream "popular" artists are legaly slaves to the label, ie its illegal for them to sell their own music and still have it distributed in major outlets, then there is the fact that it would get zero coverage. Maybe an anocment at a concert, but don't expect CNN, MTV, you name your mass media distributer to even mention that this is happening. Affter all that is the whole point. That being said I still have hope that we can arrive at a system that supports the artitist directly.

well I don't know IBM seems like a pretty descent company . . ..aside from helping the Nazis implement the holocaust,
yea corporations have as much ethics as. ... well they don't have much ethics at all.
I look forward to the day, when the more people that visit a site the more bandwith is allocated to it. ie freenet(the furture freenet that actually acomplishes its current goals) so when slashdot links to a stroy, the web site will instantly have as much bandwith as the nodes that visit it.
(5400RPM -- yuck)
I run 5400rpm drives they are quite cool and get sustained transfewer rates of 11.1megs a second, can transfer a full 650meg divx video in 55 seconds accross a 100mbs network. What more could you hope for exactly.. your not going to run gigabit switch, and your not going to run super raid cuz your not runing giagabit network anyway. and you can take thouse extra 3ms and think about world peace.
I think it is worth noting, but taking into consideration that many of us believe we will soon be able to represent inelegance in information, ie strong AI or complete understanding of biological DNA/protein folding operations,(information that becomes alive though the process of being interpreted properly) it follows that our first communication will be the visitation. which in effect raises the bar of importance for projects such as seti,
While I do believe that any form of intelligence several orders of magnitudes above ours in intelligence however it would be rated, would be indistinguishable from magic or god-like interpretations, or misconstrued scientific theory, even under direct observation, trying to extrapolate our own technology's effects on a future society can leave us dizzy and more importantly without a real clue where were headed. In much of that same way the search for extra terrestrial intelligence mirrors the Christian/ western religious ideas of believing without the ability to confirm or deny its existence, that is we are searching for something that is intangible and defies our current logic. So while the seti projects are very important in case probability and logic take the back seat to dumb luck, it is also important to note their relative significance at the same level of hoping to make communication with god, (much "chage" can potentially come of it, but highly unpractical achievement for the time being)
I think what the dude ment is that, people that creat art for art's sake or to say anything meaningfull thorugh art,.. will no need to be compicated with money to survive, and people that creat "art" for money will have no reason to do so, as all of the reason for tyring to make money, meterial welath, social reality modification, all will become negelagable to acoplish, as we aproche atomic control of all mater (including that matter which resides in our head),
what I Should have done, >> is not shut down napster. . cuz it was a very centralized type orginzation, that had many loya people that would have loved to pay 10.99 a moth for that service (and that just soungs), now>> we have lost control of the masses, all napsters "loyal" followers have fleed to other services which carry much more then songs.
Affter wollowing in the defet that I did not do that.. I would then realize that I should not make the same mistake again. and act quick in trying to set up a system where any p2p service would be forced to give me money at some point.
1) I would want to work with the file sharing services, perhaps set up something similar to what freenet clones have set up in relation to fairtunes, but naturaly charge more and force p2p people to use the standard or be legaly procecuted to the full extent of the law. you could make the sound files have some sort of propriatary encryption and include some videos with the file as to dellay the cracking of the file. . for a few weeks and it would be considered premium content, the content where you would make most of your money, then
also charge a failry high monthly fee for a all you can eat, advertise it as the best P2p network because it would be if it had the most users, . . and then just pay a percentage of the monthly subscription to the to copyright holders based on transactions, and swallow your pride in the sence that it is uncontrolable that certain files are going to be cirulating, the second you try to remove a file from the system is the second people stat jumping ship then you have no control and no control over your consumers would be horrible.
furthermore your service will not be popular if it does not provide the unlimiated access to every possible file that other service provide. By making thouse other services harder to maintain (making them illegal) and making sure your service has a good set of content.. or at least the apperance of such, you might stand a chance.
ofcousre even then.. we have problems, ownership of things is sooo built into our sociaty, the idea of owning something without paying for it and not physically steeling it/ taking it away from any praticular person, rather a big evial corrperation, is not considred a bad thing by many people. I mean I don't know. . when ever you really think about one of these thing you find that your doomed to info anarchy or a totalitarian state, which we know neither will happen.

more acuretly we will all be charged a little extrea for the murchendice .. oh wait that is what is instituded.
