Effectively, my girlfriend has also a hotmail address, and receives everyday a few University diplomas offers, which is a shame !.
It's even worse that the only filter rule that could work is to reject some sender adresses, but these great university diplomas are always sent using a different "from" address.
Exactly, I'm curruntly working in a bank where I only have access to the outside using the port 80, that doesn't avoid the fact I can receive any kind of files using my webmail server !
The highest resolution I've ever seen on an Asus is 1024*768. I was looking for a new one approximatively one month ago, it seems they still haven't any better ones.
I know that on some older models ( the L7200 and the M1000 to be precise ) the speakers were making strange noises, for nothing ( when the user moves a scrollbar, or that kind of thing ). I never managed to know why, but there was some internal interferences.
To be more detailled :
my Compaq has a 30GB HDD , DVD/CDRW , 15" SXGA 1400*1050 , Ethernet 10/100 + Modem 56K internal,
Sound Card ESS, Graphic Card ATI Rage Mobility 128 ( Even DRI's working:)), 320Mb RAM, PIII 1GHz
All that for a really reasonable price(less than 3000$).
It's quite heavy, but it's because everything is internal, FDD, DVD/CDRW.
I know that Compaq begins to sale the new 2801-EA, which is a bit more powerful, but lighter, as some peripherals are external.
I used to have an ASUS L-7200 , I've never had any problem with it, everything was working perfectly, except I had to use the X Frame Buffered server under linux because the graphic card wasn't supported at all.
The only problem was that I made the mistake to buy it with a 12"1 screen (800*600), which was too small for the use I had to make with it later.
Now I have a Compaq Presario 1801-EA, that I bought because of its screen 15", 1400*1050. Everything's working perfectly either under under Linux and Windows.
Anyway, all that depends of what you have to do with it.
I can also tell you that if I've a compaq now, it's mainly due to the fact ASUS doesn't sell any screen bigger than 14", as far as I know.
Bill Brother is playing with us.

Why do some of you want to help Bill Brother to be the master of all the technology oriented markets ?
I personaly think it's better to have the right to choose, and always investing in the same company ( the same that want to be present everywhere ) will not help at all.
I know the concurents are also big ones ( which prove we can them ), but I don't want to accept M$ on this market, especially because they nothing better to provide than the others.
Ok for the space argument, but for the rest, would you agree to have a surgeon so far from you when he's working on your only body ?
If it was the only way you had to survive, ok, but work on someone in Paris rather than to go there only because it's easier for him, I'm not sure..
( Having the choice, would you agree ? )
Yes, that looks great, at first, you know that's how a majority of artist begin, but I'm afraid it's too late. We, techno people, agree on that point, but for a majority of customers, to use this kind of tools means illegal market.
They don't know that a lot of unknown artists are actually using it, and in fact they don't care at all.
What the people want is to have the CD of the last song they heard on the radio, and to arrive to famous radios, the artists have to try to work with some marketing companies.
"Ideal libraries would be open source and free, though those aren't as important as tested/stable/reliable. What are your recommendations? Anyone have experience writing for multiple platforms at once with threading, serial I/O, and network I/O all in mind? The ideal scenario would be to recompile on the new platform without changing a line of code - will this type of portability be possible?"
I though that was the main point.
He's trying to find a solution,I just wanted to share my experience.
Well, I have already worked on a project which was quite similar to the one explained in the problem we try to solve. I used C++, but the only difference with this project was that it had to run on a Windows environment ONLY.
I don't want to begin explanations on pointers, inheritance and that kind of stuffs.
It only seems to me you're an old school guy, for who it was too hard to leave the good old C to reach a full O.O. technology.
I've worked on several projects using the Java platform, where the portability was one of the the major issue.
I could also tell you that the major part of these applications were in a banking environment, where reliability and security were, of course, vital.
It included Threading, I/O , GUI,...
The problem with Java is quite offen not the language itself, but the programmers which are not able to understand the basic O.O. principles, and to keep the logic as simple as possible.
Furthermore, Java performances have been really improved since the version 1.0
That's probably because of the shape of the keyboard, it would not be possible to fill completely the spqce offered by a PalmTop shaped PDA. That's probably why they prefered to use a user known layout (the alphabet), rather than creating a new one. After all, everybody's used to the GSM one (for the sms), which is even worse, so why not. Everybody knows it's really hard to find good compromise in this sector.
Imagine the screen depth resolution you could have..
"The solution is 1,000 times thinner than a human hair"
Just need to have enough dpi on your printer:)
To spend money in a new gaming machine is always dangerous, even with a famous company such as Nintendo.
Even if the hardware is good :
you don't know if the development will be good (remember the first PS2 games),
you don't know if its presence on the market will be sufficient to have a good game offer
I'd rather prefer to wait some weeks after its diffusion to know if it's good enough to spend my money in (of course if everybody is doing like that it will never happen:))
I think we can trust Nintendo, but having to see if the PS2 was good enough for me, I've bought one, and don't find it uselful to have two consoles of the "same" generation.
Maybe I'm paranoid or "geeky-minded" enough, but at least I'm really happy with my choices doing it this way.
Booting directly from the W98 DOS bootdisk (after all, W9x is not really more than that:)).
But better is booting from the live version of Linux, then to turn your 40 Mb HDD swap on:)
That kind of book should be used in the formations of the deciders.
Now, every company leader wants to be on the Internet, and has to be on the Internet. First, because it makes them feel more confortable when they're talking to their friends of other companies, second, a lot of them think it will help them to reach new markets, and third, you're not seen as serious if you're not.
The problem is not to be or not to be on the Internet, the problem is to find a good use for the wonderful tool that the web is.
That's were so many companies are lost, spending a lot of maney for sites of poor quality, without any practical use for their consumers.
You're right, but he still has to find a good battery fitting his needs to work with that kind of computer. I suppose it's not too hard to find an old computer with a 1024*768 screen, but don't forget he would like to have it light.
That's probably why.
That remember me my face when I've seen my work on the Internet - I was researcher in the Computer Engineering section of an italian University for my end-of-studies work - This work involved the creation of a real-time algorithm ( image processing ), and the implementation of the applications proving it was working perfectly.
The trick is that, even if there has been conferences, articles (IEEE) about my work, my name hasn't even been mentionned once. Not that I wanted to be a star, I don't mind at all in fact, but I though it was normal to mention at least the name of the people who worked on the project ( approximatively... only me:)).
That's the rule : you invite a student to help you doing something ( or do everything ) then if it's good, you take it for yourself.
Effectively, my girlfriend has also a hotmail address, and receives everyday a few University diplomas offers, which is a shame !.

Is that correct to put him in a film, without let him having the choice ? I think we should think about the respect of his memory ...
Shouldn't read the posts too, if you want to have the surprise :)

You have the answer : Java has all what you need.

Could be usefull to drive the cars of the same constructor .. shipped in the "read the news in the morning" package.
Imagine the screen depth resolution you could have ..

So, what Wine has to do is to be vmware , isn't it ?
They even probably have a marketing department.
