  1. This matters... why? on $20 Cellphones Possible with TI's New Chip · · Score: -1

I'm sorry but cell phones are overrated. I've always felt that way. Before I got one from my employer, I always felt that the idiots yammering their useless talk on their cell phones while driving, while shopping or even while sitting at a restaurant having dinner with their spouse fall into that group of people known as "completely useless turds". Now that I have one, I make it a habit to only use it when absolutely neccessary. That would be, on my walk from work to the garage to let my wife know I'm coming home a little late. Or... at home while working with my boss on a server issue at night. That's it. Period. It's never on in the car. I don't carry it into stores with me. And if I was caught with one in a restaurant or movie theater, you'd probably be able to look up and see piggies getting into formation for an air raid on the corrupt Whitehouse. In short, I think cell phones are a tool and nothing more. They're not toys unless you pair them with needless "features' like mp3 players, gaming and cameras. And if you add those features, it's likely that you've reduced its value as a... ummm.. gee... phone!

Now, with all that out of the way, I have to add that the idea of phones that are $20 is more of a problem than a benefit. This is because the current cell phones are so valueless that people seem to lose them, drop them and break them or just trade up to some cool new phone every few months. Because of all the monstrously "cheap" cell phone plans, these users haven't a clue just how much money if being thrown away. The phones they currently have are "free" or "$.01". So do you honestly think that $20 pricepoints are going to matter? It will just make them even more valueless than they are now which means people will see them as even more disposable. Speaking of which... how is this "better" than the morons who came up with the idea of a cell phone that could be printed on paper so as to be disposable? Whatever happened to the days when you would buy something and expect to keep it for a few decades with no loss in features or quality. (think the old dial phones of yore. My in-laws still have the dial phone in their kitchen and use pulse dialing in the rest of the house because it's too much of a waste to get DTMF for $2.00 a month)

God I hate what the United States and this world is becoming. Just a cesspool of self-serving, bastard ingrates who don't give a shit about anyone except themselves. Every one of them deserves a brick in the face.

As far as admins are concerned, ease of use is a matter of familiarity. As far as I know it takes a lot less time to become a good windows admin than a good unix one.

It may take less time to become a "good" Windows admin, but if someone becomes a good Unix admin, being a good Windows admin is built it. It's all the same, except that Unix got it right the first time.

You're missing a point: Microsoft doesn't buy up technologies, they buy companies. You make them sound like pirates. Having your company bought by Microsoft is like getting your big break; everyone ends up happy.

And this is good how? When a really great band that is on a minor label gets a "big break" and signs with a major label, that's usually the sign that the quality of their music is going to plummet. Look at U2. They were much better before they hit the big time. Now they're just lame. The same can be said of any company and it's technology that is absorbed by Microsoft.

You may occasionally see better technology come from smaller companies, but it's just a matter of time before they are bought up if their technology is solid (IE: Adobe buying Macromedia).

Interestingly enough, I'm seeing a lot of great things coming out of Redhat's Fedora project. However, it's pretty unlikely that any large company will buy them since they aren't really that profitable yet. This is a good thing because it means the focus is where it should be: getting the code and functionality right for educated (ie. not your average mouth breather) users.

Wow. Talk about your flamebait. Posting a pro-MS story on /. is just asking for trouble. But posting it in apple.slashdot.org is really over the top.

Now... addressing the , "is it OK to love Microsoft" question. It all depends on who you are and what your point of view of technology is. Let me explain:

    1. There are people who love certain company/technology just because they are told the technology is good. Non-technical Sun Microsystems fans tend to be an example of this. They are told that Sun Microsystems is a good company to buy stock in, so they assume that the products Sun produces are good. But this is not the case. Trust me, I've worked with a few really bad Sun products for the past five years and I welcomed HP-UX with open arms where support and reliability are concerned.

    2. There are people who love a technology because of it's status symbol ranking. Notable in this arena is Apple. Apple produces decent products, to be sure. But they are extremely expensive for what they are. They've been making a break with this as of late, so this isn't the ideal example, but there are plenty of products out there that fall into this realm. Think Adobe Photoshop vs. everyone else. Depending on your needs, Adobe Photoshop might be financial overkill. In many cases Paint Shop Pro or even GIMP might be enough. Especially where you don't need professional print features. But there are people out there who won't touch anything but Adobe Photoshop even to the extent of pirating it.

    3. There are the people who actually know technology well. They might be programmers or engineers. To them, there are two possible divisions. The first one are the people who came up with the technology first. I know quite a few people who worship the DEC Alpha. Even to the extent of passing around unsubstantiated rumours that Itanium 2 is really a DEC Alpha in disguise. They hate everything else that has come along since the Alpha because their battle cry is that they had 64-bit RISC processing back in 1992.

    4. The second group are those who know even more about technology than the people in example 3 above. These people usually have a really good clue about what constitutes good technology. They've usually been around a long time and have seen fads come, go and return as "new" again. They usually quitely shake their heads and take the more pragmatic view of choosing the most well designed technology. (They tend to be OpenVMS and Unix users)

    5. Then there are the retarded suits who base what makes a technology company good on their stock portfolio. This group is the least well informed and are the most likely candidates to love Microsoft. When they get mailings from various tech companies, they'll ditch anything from smaller companies (even if the technology is superior to larger companies) and only go with big name brands. Dell, HP, Oracle, Sun, Microsoft, IBM, etc... To them, these are the only options. They even tend to eschew companies like Epson, Gateway, Corel, Redhat even though there might be some very good technology coming out of these companies.

So, the question, "is it OK to love Microsoft" is really a non-starter. Security and reliability issues aside, Microsoft has done very little in the way of creating new and useful technologies. They just buy up technologies rather then developing them from the ground up. The company is not run by engineers, it's run by businessmen. The approach is to do just enough to make their technology usable, but not to make it superior. Where they want real performance is in their profits. And that is completely counter to excellent software engineering. For someone like me, I can't love a company that doesn't engineer things properly. Of all the companies I've had to deal with, DEC was probably THE best technology company out there with a real eye on great engineering. When they got taken over by Compaq, a good deal of that got shitcanned. When HP took over Compaq even more got given away, sold off and

In essence coders have been gelded (yes, had their balls removed) by these "easy to code" languages and IDEs. Show me a coder who can whip up C code in vi or with cat, and I'll show you a coder who is likely to have a handle on what their code is really doing. All this drag-and-drop shit is only doing one thing: it's dragging and dropping the quality of software into the latrine. People who "code" in Flash drive me up the wall. Flash sucks. VB sucks. Give me good old fashioned C or hell, even assembler. I don't buy into the notion that coding should be easy. It is a process of utilizing logic to get things done. That is never easy. I can't believe that people are still denying the truth. Just yesterday, there was a SECOND article about the discover of Planet X. Planet X is returning on it's 4000 year orbit, which means that the race that enslaved us nearly 4000 years ago, the Niburu are coming back. It's not a surprise that we haven't had a successful manned space mission in the last few years. The Bush administration, NASA, the U.S. military and some of the most powerful corporations on the planet are covering this up. Why, you may ask? Because, they have a deal with the Niburu to spare their families from the enslavement when they arrive in a few years time. It is as it was written by the Sumerians and as Zecharaiah Sitchin translated (he is the only man on Earth who can read ancient Sumerian properly).

One of the requirements that the Niburu required as part of the deal is that humans will not make any manned flights off of the planet anymore. This is why we haven't been able to get a shuttle off the ground for so long. NASA talks about the supposed failures of various systems, but it's just a cover-up. Just like the cover-up they pulled off when the manned space station jsut a couple years ago hear strange sounds coming from the outside. The sounds were the sounds of a Niburu operative crawling around on the outside of the station. NASA later claimed it was just a bit of casing that had been damaged and needed to be fixed. What really happened? The anstronauts were reprogrammed to become Niburu operatives and came back to Earth to infiltrate NASA.

What about the dead astronaut found in the Arabian dessert? What? You didn't hear about that? Maybe it's because the Niburu controlled media don't want you to hear about it. They've been stirring things up on the global front to get the commoners at each other's throats so that we are in disarray when they arrive to enslave us. The real story is that a dead astronaut was found in the Arabian dessert after he had unwittingly announced the discovery of Planet X back in the 90s when that comet was going to slam into Jupiter. Why didn't Jupiter ignite into a big sun when that happened? Because the Niburu prevented the ignition with their awesome mind control. But they didn't do it to protect us out of goodness. They did it to protect us as property. So, this dead astronaut was found in the Arabian dessert. And that's why.

Don't fall for the cover-ups. Read the teachings of Zecharaiah Sitchin. And prepare for the intergalactic battle with the Niburu. Our politicians, military and business men have sold us out, so it's up to us to get armed to the teeth and fight when the invasion force comes. One of the most imporatant weapons you can get right now is a telescope and some astrophotography gear. Print out the photos of the impending approach of Planet X and post them everywhere online and in real life. Make sure that everyone knows about the conspiracy. This ain't no time to go wastin' away in Margaritaville.
