    * If it was some kid with duct tape and a PDA they would go on and on about how the laptop companies "don't get it"

    * If it was some Linux company they would talk bout how innovative it is and how only X makes it possible

    But is mainstream and its MS - so it must be stupid :)

    They don't want to know facts man... they just want to keep their heads in the sand and pretend it's all going to stay the same as it was when Linux was clearly superior - back before Server 2003 and XP SP2.

    They will jsut keep screaming that there are no new features and become less and less relevant as time goes on.

    You have many software options aside from the hardware ones.

    For our podcast we decided to use Hot Recorder because it "just works",. It also nicely puts my voice on one channel and all the other Skype users on another. This makes later mixing easy if there is a volume mismatch. You can also just use the mix output on your soundcard but honestly its so much easier to use a tool thats made for this its silly to mess with it. For the $29 or so just do it.

    If you want to hear an example the latest podcast on "Power In Practice" (warning,. nsfw audio) was recorded this way via a Skype 3 person conference call.

    You seriously need to relax. It's a big world out there, and almost none of it cares about you personally at all.

    I don't recall anyone saying DOA was "the game of the future". It's a game in a market of games. Some like it, some don't. If you don't then don't buy it.

    That's called a "barrier to entry." It's a feature of the non-free market which is inaccessible to 99% of business in order to limit or abolish competition (see "insufficient huevos") and deny small business access to the capital markets.

    Or it could be that things are - you know - expensive. The time and expertise fo the people with the skills and talent needed to make a AAA title these days for a console is huge. Thats going to happen any time skills are relatively rare (and talent is).

    What your essentially saying that the only way to have a zero barrier to entry is for people to:

    * Give you the hardware
    * Donate their labor, talent and skills
    * Produce the finished product for free
    * Transport the finished product for free
    * Advertise the finished product for free

    Thats just silly. It's like saying that your inability to start a international airline without spending more than the 300$ you have under your mattress is a sign of a vast conspiracy.

    Get a grip.

    They don't give you details on the invalid clicks because it would make things a lot easier for people to reverse engineer the process they use to detect them.

    I love that I have now seen someone on /. defend "security through obscurity" in order to defent Google.

    I don't usually agree with Dvorak, but he does have a valid point here. What is exciting in about Vista, Office, or anything else Microsoft is producing?

    Well, since the rest of your post indicates you have actually spend zero time learning anythign at all about any of the products and technologies you mention... the answer is "nothing, stay asleep".

    This attitude is essential to zealots. The world doesn't conform to their views so they simply must assume that everyone else is stupid or under coercion. To consider that tohers do not agree would be to have to re-examine their core beliefs.

    Windows has become such a huge part of European infratructure that we can no longer rely on a shady corporation.

    The message is clear - whenever a US componey creates something that is so sucessful Europe needs it they will attempt to take it from you by legal force.

    Not only is it not hard - it isn't necessary in this case.

    The government HAS a copy of the source code availale - and always has. Microsoft routinely makes the source available to the larger clients and partners, and the govt certainly qualifies.

    As to paranoia about the legal status of a government driven replacement tool or reader, it's mindless pranoia. the governemtn has a long history of opting out of laws that constrain it in many situations the woudl simply declare the DMCA or whatever doesn't apply to the government itself.

    You make some good points, but just how long should Microsoft and PC makers hold on to "legacy hardware"?

    That depends on the market.

    What is amazing is how peopel will tie themselves in knots to bitch. If MS dropped legacy support there woudl be cries of "Monopoly!" and "Forced upgrade!". Hell, peopel are doing that screaming now about an OPTIONAL upgrade in user interface design (Glass) in Vista.

    Let's face it - if MS keeps legacy support in people will bitch and whine and no doubt sue when they can't compete. If they drop it people will bitch and whine and no doubt sue when they can't compete.

    See the pattern?
