You can probably argue about the truth of me being on parole, but checking my posting history and some rudimentary googling would prove that fairly quickly.

Disclaimer: I'm a physics student, not a physicist. However, it is my poorly educated thought is that they could use a Fredkin Gate.

Maybe he didn't want anyone reading his personal files? That seems like the most obvious explanation to me.

Or he died unexpectedly, and had made clear at many points that the information on his computer was extremely important to him. You'd honor your brother or uncles wish, right? Same thing here. Code he's worked on, things he valued, information he wanted kept 'alive', as it were.

Someone else mentioned that I could just take the HDD out and put it in another box to recover the files. I could do that, but it's really a matter of time. I ran crack and john against it, tried a few tricks like booting into single user mode, etc etc, but that's all stuff I can do while I'm twiddling away at something else. Between school, my daughter, and 'life', I'm pretty busy and haven't had the time to do some old fashioned data recovery. I have a few days free coming up, I'll probably do it then.

When my uncle passed away last year, he had left passwords and files in a safe place at work. He was ill, and was smart enough to prepare, at least for his work files.

Two of his home computers were taken by his brothers and reformatted, losing his entire website and tons of priceless photos and the like. I have his laptop, but I can't seem to get around needing a password, and haven't had time to crack it. I'm just glad my mom managed to get that.

The moral of the story is, work is important, but some of us left behind would like to be able to get those nice photos of you, or be able to save your website from being lost, so make sure you follow through and talk to your wife :)

If you just use AC'97, why would you get problems? And the new standard, azalia, should allow linux to work with much beter quality without individual drivers.

I use ac97, and i810 sound with FC1, and it sounds horrible. The first time I plugged my headphones in, I thought that the speakers were damaged because the sound was horrendous. I hear that FC2, by virtue of using a 2.6 kernel, will have better sound, but even i810 sound - which has been supported since at least 2.2 and is as common as a soundblaster card - is poor.

This is the reason I haven't bought a seperate sound card; if onboard sound is so poorly supported, why waste money on something that won't sound better?

The improving sport performance is based on something, though of course taken out of context and misused.

I have a friend who did a study comparing the effectiveness of Creatine suppliments vs drinking a couple gallons of water. Creatine, as I understood from him (He's an MD and this is far more his field than mine) helps the muscles absorb and retain water, and that's why it's used by bodybuilders and the like.

It turned out from his study that taking a large quantity of water is just as effective as taking creating before a workout, but with the side effect of pissing like a racehorse.

I have no clue if my friend was the only person to ever study this, or even if he was that no one in the world learned what creatine does and extrapolated the effects of water, but there is some logical reason someone would say water is good for their athletic performace....but much like their starving being good theory, it's misused and misunderstood.
