  1. Re:Derivative work on Student Suing Amazon For Book Deletions · · Score: 1

I wouldn't be surprised to see a lawyer claim that the annotations are in fact a derivative work of the book, and that since Amazon had no right to sell the book, then the student had no right to create the annotations.

And he would be technically right.

The entire episode was bogus, but if they didn't own the rights, they don't get to distribute, and in theory you didn't get a right to review and comment on it..

I hope this guys loses, and loses big so it becomes a HUGE issue in the press. THen perhaps DRM will get the ( bad ) press it deserves and filter down to the common guy who will respond with 'wtf'.

Someone has to fall on their sword for the cause.

So it was in my HS as well, however due to decades of 'politically correct training', it is no longer even discussed in classes. Also dropped from that list was 'to kill a mocking bird'.

No, no laws say that, but just a tad bit of human courtesy should demand it. It only takes a second.

Was their debt to society ever paid?

According to current law, the answer apparently is no.

To be honest i'm torn on this issue. I fully believe in the concept that once you have paid your debt you should be allowed to get on with your life. However, this is in the realm of mental illness, and simple prison time does NOT cure you of it. So which is more important, the safety of the area or your rights to be left alone with a potentially dangerous ( to others ) illness still brewing. We do isolate infectious people, is this different? I donno..

Competition in the business world isn't imaginary, its quite real and is what makes the world work. If there was no competition, the business world wold be socialist or communist ( depending on what form it took ) and fall flat on its face.
