They have several advantages, cost ( you own it ), you can actually repair it on your own, no black boxes for people to get data from, not all are 'gas hogs' ( i get 30 mpg out of one of my older ones )...
I can see this slowly morphing from a 'reward responsible citizens' to 'penalize the bad people that don't care about the environment'.
If you keep your old car because you like it ( or cant afford a new one ) you will be demonized, penalized, and eventually it might even be taken from you.
Even if it didn't 'live on illegal content' ( which youtube doesn't ) id still refuse to be a customer of them if they fold to demands like this. So while i would contribute to their downfall and as you suggest proving the industries point, it would be for a different reason.
As far as your walmart analogy, i make it a point to do business with the local mom and pop shops in my area. Local quality over mega convenience. Even if it costs me a little more in dollars and time, its the right thing to do.
Sure im only one person, but if enough of us do it, it makes a difference.
Woz isn't a manager/marketeer. He is a *brilliant* engineer but couldn't run a company of that size if his life depended on it.
Much as Jobs couldn't engineer his way out of a paper bag. But if he could manage to climb out of it without ripping it, he could paint it pink and sell it to millions, and convince us we are happy we bought a pink bag..
It sounds like in Germany she has to pay. She 'bought' it from the website in question. In the US YMMV but i bet here too, if you agreed to pay, you pay or get sued. Doesn't matter that you can get it free elsewhere. THERE it was pay only.
Really, its not any different then agreeing to buy any other item online: "click here to buy"
She should have read the agreement first. If its struck down, then technically all internet sales of long term support contracts ( or all sales? ) are subject to being ignored.
it all depends on how you define boot, and how many layers of a 'modern' GUI, and services, you want on top that OS.
I don't think you are ever going to get sub 1 second boots from *power down*, but if you were around in the old days, booting an Atari ST to full GEM desktop didn't take but a few seconds from ROM. Not much longer from disk.
Seen this many a time with larger parrots. Sure its cute, but does it qualify to even be on the idle page?
Ya, its pretty common here too.
The story writer must live under a rock... no wait...
It only highlights the problem of using FREE net services.
If you pay for hosting ( or self host ) and host your own custom webapps, its not an issue.
Some of us prefer the older cars.

Marketing can make or break a product.
Gone are the days of people demanding quality, its all about what is new and shiny that they see on tv/news.
If you cant run it, you probably didn't vote for him anyway.
He doesn't care about you, and i bet you don't care for him either.
Personally i think the current backdoor attacks on my freedoms is a serious matter.
We let this stuff slide, we wont even be able to have a private thought without potentially going to detention for reprogramming.

There are other alternatives that are pretty much outside the reach of the 'industries'.
Sounds to me like that ISP in the story has no moral grounding and would screw its customers if the economy didnt suck.
The war is just beginning people. Are you ready?
Keep this up and people will just find a less draconian place to be.
Its all part of the citizens towing the governmental line without question. Anything that could remotely promote individualism is bad.
Or they are just jealous.. take your pick.
AH, like the truth.
I proposed this basic theory back in the early 80's and it wasn't taken seriously.
Cool!
My foot, people were doing this decades ago in the analog world.
If you include fiber.. its digital too.
Look its a Democrat!

Expect the resurrection of the Netwon in early Q3.
Here in the US you cant return retail software in a box for the most part. Once its opened, its normally yours. So donno..
Unless she downloaded it without being notified upfront of the cost, she ain't going to win this one.
You can bet it was there somewhere, in the fine print.
I agree its morally wrong to take advantage of people like that, but it legal. Buyer Beware..
Of course then again, are they going to provide some support or something for her $? If so, then its not even immoral and just annoying.

They forced her to use it.
Dell needs better customer service, thats all.
