    I already dont bother with flash sites, and dont have java enabled by default.

    If they cant use simple html on a site to render with, then i just move on to another and they lost a sale.

    There are a couple of companies that are making a living off sparc clones now. sure not many, but id not call it 'nobody'.

    There used to be some free tools out there long ago that would let you design the actual silicon. Not sure what ever happend to them.

    Besides, they said they are releasing the entire thing in this case so that problem is sort of moot.

    Unfortunately, all 3 can and often do involve politics. Especially the 3rd on your list. Thats how you get and keep your contracts, playing 'the game'.

    Office politics effect everyone of course, but if you have more skills you still have the advantage.

    But the advantage of being a talented generalist is you have a N+1 higher chance of remaining employed then someone that can only do one thing, no matter how well.

    So what its hard, and you might get it wrong? That doesnt mean it cant be entertaining reading and thought provoking.

    History class is for the lazy writer since there is little to 'invent'. Sure, history is really interesting and educational, but not in the same way as scifi is entertaining and thought provoking.

    And if his 'history works' turn out anything like the "difference engine" was ( it was set in the past remember ), then his career is over as a writer im afraid.

    They used free stuff that anyone can download in their product and didnt mention it, so must burn them at the stake. Geesh.

    Thats not a business case. Thats just a lame excuse.

    And in a well run shop, even if you got permission to run it, the IT department would have to install it for you. You wouldn't be downloading it yourself.

    Once you grow up and have to support 40000 users, you might understand that things are different in the business world then they are at home.

    User installed softare that isnt part of hte official internal standard increases support costs, among other issues. So unless there is a business need, i dont see a problem with it being blocked. ( tho, simply blocking an executable name isnt the right way to do it, but that is a different discussion )

    Now, if you come up with a valid business need for said non standard software, and its ignored, then we are in agreement.
