How would you know? Nothing is missing from your PC, so unless you happen detect the infection you wont have any way to know until you get the letter. "Hackings" often go unnoticed, or are even cleaned up afterwards to remove the evidence. ( apologies to the old school for the misuse of the term )
"..as long as it's not on the grounds of race, religion, sex, etc..."
I think in a *private* event, you can legally discriminate. May not win any friends, and the press may eat you alive, but i do think its your right to restrict your own private activities. ( ie, boyscouts... )
What are they calling a 'computer'? If they include embedded devices, im sure we surpassed 1billion long ago. Remember that even a digital watch is technically a computer.
Sounds a lot like what the ndiyo project ( http://www.ndiyo.org/ ) is trying to do, except they are also working on providing their own ( sub 100$ ) hardware to go along with the concept.
While personally i agree, and interpret it the same way as you, they *could* interpret just the opposite if they wanted and if it suited their need. The rules are intentionally written vague enough so they have the advantage.
So then they clamp down on ALL traffic coming out of your house, regardless of protocol, port or destination. Problem solved. Or, they just claim you are trying to circumvent and cancel you on the spot ( and you have no recourse, they retain the right to cancel at any point for any reason ).
I wonder if in time ISPs will refuse to take you on if you have been cancelled from another, sort of a virtual blacklist. Since there isnt really any regulation at this point, they could do this.
And just for the record, a private company really cant censor, thats a governments job. I doubt anyone would agree that a reduction in bandwidth is censorship anyway. ( not saying that Governments arent trying to do that, just that it doesn't apply in THIS case )
Sounds more to me like we are just returning to the old days were things were slower but still worked. The ISPs oversold and underestimated our future use.
Some already state you cant do any 'commercial activity' with your lines unless you upgrade, so VPN back to the office could be techicnally a violation.
Someday unbreakable encryption will be banned by the Feds anyway.
No, you sue / charge the owners/operators. Much as you would do with a corporation that has overstepped its boundaries.
Now, i agree its hard to get somone transferred out of the country to face charges, but it DOES happen on occasion, and it doesnt mean they cant at least try, even if the request is denied.
Ummm, the chinese have a *right* to live however they want as a independent society ( until they try to force it onto other countries, or become a danger to the rest of the world ). As do we. Dont forget that there are people on this planet that thing democracy is just as wrong as we might think of theirs..
Who wins when there is a disagreement? Who get to make the decision of what is the 'right' way to live and the 'wrong' way? ( ill give you a hint, its not you )
With the current trend of censorship, use restrictions, 2 tier web access, and now 2 tier email, the entire concept of the 'internet' is going out the window. Its turning into just an extension of the 'big media'.
"Nah, seen too much BSD code get proprietarized and used to screw end users. Not with my code they dont. They can write it all on their own if they want power over others that bad."
Or they can just use it and not release it back so no-one knows. Personally, all this license nonsence is just that, nonsence. Its out there so its free to use, or learn from with no strings attached.
Not direct action, but if local ISPS's where the industry does have influence are forced to track any traffic that goes to/from piratebay's servers, the *AA might be able to show intent since you downloaded the torrent fie for xyz movie/song. Then they have the feds come search your house and detain you until you squeal ( or just block traffic completely, and report the attempt to connect.. )
Will posession of a torrent file alone become probable cause someday? Who knows.
Scary times ahead for what is left of our freedoms.

And soon private individuals. Just in case you might be a terrorist, or a IP pirate, or just an undesirable that needs to be tracked.

The cost will just be passed along to the consumer.
Oh, some lame TV show. Thanks for wasting my time.
Disclaimer: i couldn't get to the story at work.

My files were stolen. Prove me wrong.

How much longer will we ( the world ) continue to ignore their own moral issues with China in return for cheap goods? A long long long time.

No. "PeopleNet1"

Then what value is the ISP?
This cant be legal. "here is your service. Oh, you want it to actually work, well pay up"
Umm nothing is broken, its Chinas right to block whatever they feel is right.
Techincally if fickr circumvents this, they are violating China's wishes, and could be sued charged with treason and extradited.
They arent using their patents? Huh, what are you smoking?
What was the 'linux violates our patents so pay up' statement from Balmer? Was i just dreaming?
The biggest bully on the block never minds abuse of the rules, in their favor.

If this sticks, its a really bad precedent for any 'provider' in the states. None will be trustable.
Its too late to return it? What store doesnt have a return policy? ( sure, often its only 30 days or so, but it exists )
If you read the EULA's they normally state something like "if you dont agree to this, return to your place of purchase for a full refund".
If you dont accept it, you can get a full refund ( supposedly ).
Didnt know that ( i switched to Proteus when fire started having troubles with msn ).
Looks good, so add that to the 'missing list'.
