If the flash requires a hardware jumper to reset, then no worries.. If its software controlled, then ya, you are screwed.
I think you could set a flash IDE drive to read only, and use it for your boot/OS. Sure it could trash your data, but at least the system is ok after the reboot. If not, I think there is a market for this.
But i would imagine that the 'solution' will never filter down to the common man as it will be so complex only a few of us will be able to control our own hardware at that point. ( such a small amount they wont care anymore )
Then the industries wil have 'won', and freedom will have 'lost' ( since this is much larger then just being able to watch a DVD, its about the basic rights of freedom of information ).
Any OS would is vunerable to an extent, since 90% of the problems are caused by the users allowing things to be installed. No OS can guard against that.
As long as you didnt agree to any of their EULA that gives them permission to audit you at their whim, you can tell them to buzz off. ( if you have, you violate contract by telling them to get off the property )
But, they can still go ask a judge for a warrant, or sue you in court if they feel like it.
I do agree with you 100%, however, Microsoft did say on the record they wouldnt pull this exact stunt.. So yes, we can bitch at them for going back on their word, if its true.
This is the danger of letting them exist at all. They will restrict choice as they get more and more powerful. Sure its their right when they are small, but as they approach the status of monopoly the rules change.
Is not a guaranteed right. The constitution only covers the right as it relates to governmental control, not private business.
Now, is it bad business practice to trample on its customers that are expressing themselves *legally*? Sure, but its their right being a private company to have whatever policy they want, even if it alienates their customers. If they start accepting governmental subsides ( or get declared a monopoly ) then i feel the rules change, but i dont think any of the companies in question are getting any )
And while i may or may not agree with what the 'speech' was about, i can always do business elsewhere due to their polices, thats my right as a citizen.
Ah, but you forget the push to make it a criminal issue... I dont doubt they will manage at some point.
And there is that rule that if its over a certain amount it does become a criminal manner. This is why they claim such silly amounts of damages for a SINGLE file.. To get it pushed over that line almost automatically.
Even if its secure, its not that hard to break into it anyway.. or just directly compromise your pc with a trojan.. So really in ANY situation you can claim it wasnt you, quite reasonably.
Now, that said, if they get a search warrant and strip your house bare and find that 'backup' cd hidden away with one of the files in question, your quite logical defense melts away like an ice cube in hell.
I dont see them killing off MSO, nor becoming anything other then a 'fad'.
The professional world in general isnt ready for 3rd party hosting of their daily bread and butter apps, yet. Someday perhaps, but after being stung from the last attempt at a return to the concept of ASPs, not many will step up to the plate again for a while.
Fictitious name, posted via a public anonymous redirector to hide my true IP. ( technically, via wireless in another building to avoid any camera record, with a forged MAC address on the laptop )
To try to find a relation between this and myself would prove interesting, at best.
Since you didnt do your homework: In Texas ( among a few other places ) just being on the property IS considered self-defense. They have extended 'castle rights' to the property line. ( i hear you can even shoot them in the back if they are running away, as long as they have some of your stuff.. though i would say that is a tad beyond the line unless they are carrying out my kid )
You are also assuming that a stray 7.62x39 bullet hasnt shredded the guys camera. Even if it still was in one piece and did have a picutre, it would only show that he was on MY propertly at the time and I was protecting my family. Evidence that would support my statement of concern for my safety.
So you think its wrong? So let me get this straight.. You live 2 hours outside the nearest town, and at least 20 mins from your propertly line wich is surrounded by a well labeled 10' fence. You suddenly see some nut 20 yards from you in the front yard pointing a black cylinderal object in your general direction and you will do what, wave at him? Im glad you arent taking care of my family. you are simply irresponsible..
And before you call me a nut, im only talking about MY property here, im not talking about going into town to lynch people or start firing at some moron that cut me off on the freeway ( well, unless he also hops out of his car and starts runing towards me with a baseball bat.. ). This discussion is about simple protection of me and my famiy ( and our home/property ) is a right and i am willing to exersize it if need be, without any hesitation. ( hesitation gets you killed and doesnt give you a 2nd chance very often )
( oh, and im done with this, im finished talking to all you pansies that are begging to be a crime victim. i have no use for any of you )
The intruder that was trespassing had a object that appeared to be a gun pointing at me, and threatened me verbally. I shot in self defence. Prove me wrong. ( dead men dont talk, if you were not aware of that )
And for your reference in case you want to test your lack of knowledge on my property, self defence DOES hold up in this area of the world. In fact, some states allow you to fire on an intruder in your home even if you arent threatened directly, as the unwelcome intrusion is enough of a threat. ( as it should be ) Check out Florida's intrusion laws if you doubt me.
Oh, and a dead man cant own anything, again for your reference.

No, that only works if the act isnt illegal that you did in the first place.
So when do these start?
Geesh..
But i would imagine that the 'solution' will never filter down to the common man as it will be so complex only a few of us will be able to control our own hardware at that point. ( such a small amount they wont care anymore )

Now i can watch the movies that I freaking paid for, on any device i want.
The whole concept of keeping me from the content i paid for is ludicrous, and is why i dont support IP of any kind now.
Today or tomorrow?

Nah, its all easy to kill if you use a ROM based OS.
Just reboot.
Beacuse the ones with the most money control the media. And it isnt us consumers.
what more needs o be said?

As of yet there is no proof they are doing this. " off the record, anonymous contacts" mean nothing.
Now, if its proven to be happening, then ya. its time to get pissed off. ( though, no one can say this wasnt unexpected )

But distribution is...

Too bad you were modded as funny.. I doubt you were trying to be as such, and i tend to agree that you cant legislate intelligence.

Come onto my property without being invited, ill take care of your problem for you.

....and 'extend'....
Not when there is a gate at the entrance with a sign that declares it private property and no tresspassing.
There is also a 10' fence that encircles the ENTIRE property. Again, with adequate signage.
Nice try tho.
