90% of the huge companies ( most of the MSO market ) are on those damned molp plans, so they automatically get the upgrades, even if they dont want them. ( and eventually they have to install them, again even if they dont want them )
So they are on a 'list'. What does this mean in practical terms? Seems i can still buy chinese goods if i want, ( i dont, but thats a different issue ) and they can buy my product if i want to sell it to them..
The representatives are mandated to do the will of the people. If they dont they should be taken out back and eliminated from the gene pool and public office.
Its *my* taxes paying for the connection and hardware, so its *my* will. End of discussion.
As i stated in another post, i dont actually use any internet service at my library, nor do i live in that state so this isnt about *me*. The basic principle of wholesale restriction what they are doing that i have a problem with.
You mentioned 'waiting on some kid polishing his myspace page', well the kid should not have access unless his parents are there, and any library I have been has had signs up with time restrictions so that everyone gets a chance.
A bunch of people in their back yards doing it 'the old fashioned way' for their cloes friends is not an industry. ( i happen to be one of them backyard enabled citizens, so peroanally im taken care of either way ). 99.9% of the people in this country arent competent enough to make their own. Hell 1/2 cant even cook dinner anymore let alone create something to protect thri family with..
Well the technology behind this is sound and valid.
Most people that develop stuff like this dont have to wrestle with the morality of using the devices, or how they can easily be abused.
Get in line at the gun shop for the next revolution? Better do it quick, if you havent noticed the government is attacking that industry to remove it from the face of the earth.
Excuse me, the library *isnt* free. Im paying for it wth my taxes. Therefore its MY equipment. And to be banned from a normally legal activity is not correct.
Once software returns to the 'pay per use lease' model, your isp ( or ASP if they arent the same place by then ) will simply give you access to what you leased on their servers, so you wont be installing anything locally anyway. All you have is a 'smart' terminal.
At that point, except perhaps for device drivers, you wont need admin rights.
Umm what about adults? Dont we as an adult have a right to view what we want ( that is legal, not talking about kiddy porn or something like that here )?
We can debate all day long about letting children have access to this stuff when a parent isnt around, but removing it from adults as well, who pay for the library with their taxes? Ummm something is a miss here.
Ok, well you got me on that, but i agree, if you cant install *anything* it would pretty much be a embedded device relegated to control your toaster for eternity.

Being a parent, I dont have a problem with restricting access to minors without their parents standing beside them.
The problem i had with the bill as is was in restricting the adult's access too, so requiring proof of age i dont have a problem with at all.
They can also apply the same rules to books as well, as some books are not suited for kids but still should be available to adults.
( and as a disclaimer I've never used internet at a library )
