    A lot of people care.

    Many of us dont want to be tied to something non-free, and thus controlled by another party.

    "does the job" has a wider meaning to us.

    It also limits what OO will run on now. If there isnt a java port that is blessed by Sun, then you 'cant run it here'.

    While they may be biased, and slant their findings, the concept of 'a problem' is valid.

    Even if nothing ever comes to light from IP/patent problems, it can ( and is ) keeping some companies away from adoption of anything open source out of fear of lawsuits.

    Remember, even if you win, the fight can easily cost you enough to put you out of business..

    Lets say for a moment they can create another Alexandria, this time digital.

    Then most print books go out of style..

    Who is to stop someone from changing the text, to fit their needs/views/beliefs and claiming its 'always been that way'.. With no hard paper evidence to prove them wrong it gets accepted as fact.

    This already happens with book 'revisions' over time.. Subsequent generations get different 'facts', all twisted to fit the views of who is currently in control.

    Or even ought ban of information. "sorry, you don't need to know this" and poof it no longer exists. This is harder to do if people still own the hardcopy..

    Ok, so I'm paranoid, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. And I'm old enough to have seen it happen in the schools.

    Perhaps they dont conform to the 'Microsoft guidelines' because the guidelines dont conform to what the 3rd parties are trying to accomplish?

    There are many cases where you really *need* something different in a UI to be productive.

    Not everything is a word processor or spreadsheet and works well with what Microsoft thinks is right. When was the last time Microsoft produced a good CAD application.. Oh wait, that isnt their market is it.. See my point?.

    If it costs too much to do business there, they will move elsewhere. And take their jobs with them.

    Beteen laws that make it hard to do business at all, or raising taxes, other areas are doing it as well.

    Sooo.. its ok to commit a crime and 'put down' someone that doesn't even know what is going on?

    That's about like shooting out the tires of someone that didn't know the speed limit and went over 5MPH.. "well they had to be stopped"

    How about telling their ISP instead.. so they can notify the user. Sort of like giving the speeder a warning ticket..

    It is also not reasonable to require that the average Joe understands their pc enough to not get infected.. no more then it would be reasonable for you to understand heart surgery before you went to the doctor for the flu.. Or how to rebuild your transmission when you go in for an oil change. Skills like that take training.

    Isn't this sort of like blowing up a speeding car?

    The collateral damage to innocent people will be tremendous.. If a spammer is stupid enough to use his own machine, he would drop off line instantly after he broadcasts.. IBM's packets have to go somewhere, flooding out neighbors..

    Plus, what if the person spamming has been infected with a virus and isn't knowingly spamming, or IBM's system misidentifies the offending machine? There would be hell to pay..

    Yes, spam sux, and it needs to stop, but we need to do it properly..

    I dont think they are different really.

    I just wont run around reselling others artistic work as they were not 'released' in the same way that the 'code' in question was.

    In comparison, if i have sheet music that was release, then i feel i can do what ever i want with that.. just not the orginal work.

    ( we are beating a dead horse here )
