Exactly. It's a country that doesn't exist in the eyes of most other countries, which makes it beyond the reach of international law enforcement. There are other countries in the world like that, the difference with Transnistria is that it has a somewhat modern infrastructure.

  7. Specialist ISP of Transnistria.. again. on 30K WordPress Blogs Infected With the Latest Malware Scam · · Score: 5, Interesting
It looks like the first step in the infection is via an IP (194.28.114.103) belonging to Specialist ISP of Transnistria. That has featured before on Slashdot in this story.

The block 194.28.112.0/22 is simply all evil (I've documented it here in the past), there's no reason to send traffic to it at all, blocking it is a good option.

  8. GLONASS on Secret UK Network Hunts GPS Jammers · · Score: 2
The Russian GLONASS system uses a different frequency from GPS (around 1.602 GHz for GLONASS, 1.57542 and 1.2276 GHz for GPS). It might be that GLONASS signals would be unaffected by a GPS jammer, although I can't imaging that it would be much of a stretch to make a GPS jammer work for GLONASS as well. The forthcoming European Galileo system uses different frequencies again.

GLONASS is interesting because harware support for GLONASS positioning has been in some smartphones since 2011, and it will become very mainstream this year. I would also expect to see personal navigation tools supporting GLONASS as well as GPS this year. More satellites means a better fix, and it isn't very expensive to do.

So, in the future your vehicle tracking might use a combination of GLONASS, Galileo and GPS using a much broader frequency range than just GPS alone.

  12. Heins and RIM vs Elop and Nokia on CEOs of RIM Step Down · · Score: 4, Insightful
Thorsten Heins is a RIM guy through-and-through, he was personally responsible for a lot of RIM's decisions in past years. His introductory video basically shows a guy who is out of touch with RIM's fundamental problems.. he promises more of the same, which is really just a recipe for disaster. Compare this with Stephen Elop of Nokia and his "burning platform" memo which showed a new CEO who realised just how screwed their company was unless they made very radical changes.

Although it isn't certain that Elop will manage to save Nokia, he at least understood that painful changes needed to be made. I'm not sure that Heins understands the dangers that RIM finds itself in though..

Although.. I bought an HP TouchPad in the firesale intending to move it to Android from webOS, but actually it's a nice OS (although it has its limits). There's already an application library for it, not huge, but a good start. It would be a shame to see webOS vanish completely..
