but this sounds like a pointless waste of time and money.
Waste of time and money? Depends on your definition of waste. I drink Dr. Pepper soft drinks. I get them for $2.50 per 12-pack. That comes out to ~20.8 cents per drink. I can get water out of the tap for WAY less than that, and it does the same thing (quenches my thirst) and is way better for me as far a health is concerned. But I enjoy drinking them (I do drink water often, too, but sometimes I want a Dr. Pepper.) So is this a "waste" of money? I use my laptop for several hours every day, and having a nice laptop that I will enjoy, does not seem to me like a waste. I have a Sea-Doo that I enjoy very much, and many of the older people I work with can't understand why I would pay so much for something I can only ride 4 months out of the year. Because I enjoy it enough during that time for it to be worth the cost. Also, I enjoy working with computers and electronics, so I don't consider the many electrical/electronic projects that I have worked on (and learned from) a waste of time. Also understand, I don't spend every penny I get. I have a few savings accounts, an IRA, and a nice 401k that I contribute the max amount to. But I make sure to enjoy my life. I have seen too many people die with millions in the bank, that lived their whole lives like paupers, waiting for the second Great Depression when they would need that money.
As for the desperate need to stand out, I mentioned attracting the hot geek girl as an attempt at humor. I want this because I will enjoy it. If others think it is "cool" then all the better. As for the USB cable through your nose piercing, I have no body piercings or tatoos. I am an IT professional and as such, I dress that way.
I hope I'm not coming off too "preachy" and I definitely don't mean to belittle you. I just hope you don't lead an unhappy life, with thousands in the bank getting moldy, because you don't want to "pointlessly waste money."
They don't have any! (I had good service from MS.)

...and won't for a few weeks. My XBOX stopped reading game discs. It said it was not an XBOX game or it was dirty. 2 of my games were brand new, so that wasn't the case. I called XBOX support, after navigating through the menu (maybe 4 buttons) I spoke with someone immediately. He told me something I could try that might fix it. I tried, it didn't, so he mailed me a box. I sent the unit off Dec. 27th and got it back Dec. 31st. It works great now. And I'm satisfied with the support.
It's a little difficult though...
First, move through the game without dying more than the amount of initial lives you have.
Second, defeat the end boss.
Victory!
Hrmmm... Does anyone else find it amusing that micheal, who WORKS for/. calls FortKnox a kid because he spends time there? That would be like me as a Network Admin saying the people I work with spend too much time on computers!
I don't think micheal understood Moose's comment at all. He wasn't complaining that he got modded down. He was complaining that he got modded down because he was logged in as A_Non_Moose, rather than based on his posts. THAT is the issue.
It's funny that this FUD and media sensationalism is coming from the people who are always complaining about FUD and media sensationalism when it comes to Linux!
Hmmm... Also, someone can use any web page you visit or any email you open can take over your computer, steal sensitive files, destroy your machine, anything? Really, they can send the "Overload CPU" command and cook my processor? (Must be a linux command, my Win2K machine doesn't have it.) They can give me Anthrax? "Oh, no! Not the Thrax!" (-Butters, South Park) That "anything" is a little broad, don't you think?
Come on guys, I would expect this in the Enquirer, but not on/.
Actually there are such laws, maybe not in your neck of the woods, but I don't really know where you live. If you live in Seattle, maybe you should read this. If you had read my post, you would have seen that I was giving examples of how to create a filter list. I noticed that in my personal experience several of the SPAM mails I received had this little line citing some section of some law, I copied it into my list of filters and viola! Bye bye SPAM.
So, yes, I will go ahead and filter that block of text. You can keep your head in the sand and keep reading your SPAM. Next time, before you post, maybe you should do some homework.
Actually, there are several things you can look for. If the spam actually complies with the law, there is a section at the bottom that says, "In compliance with..." I can't remember it all and I'm at work, so I can't look at my spam filters (they're at home).
Also, look for "send to 10 people" and that will get most chain letters. "make $$$" will get several hundred a week. "to be removed" will get a lot, but be careful as it will also get most legit mailing lists too.
I set these filters and then waited for SPAM to get through. If one did I would look at it and try to determine if there was anything unique that wouldn't be in normal correspondence. My SPAM count is still high, but only about 1 a month gets in.
I can people to get out of my way when the light turns green now. I can just imagine if they start a game of Quake everytime they get stuck at a red light. I'm about as wired as you can get, but even I draw the line at that.
On the other hand, for kids in the back seat with head phones, maybe quiet trips will make a comeback.
Only 40 hrs/week? Where did you get that cushy job?
Actually, I do hang out with the other IT staff, and not just at Christmas or holidays. We have a poker game every friday night. But it isn't just the other IT people. My two best friends are a Development (electrical) Engineer and the QA Manager. We Jet-ski on the weekends during the summer. I think it is very important to have friends in every situation.
If you paid by Credit Card (your comment said you used UPS internet, so I assume you did) and haven't paid the bill yet, refuse payment. Tell the credit card company you didn't receive the service you were promised. Most of the time your CC company will go to bat for you, and you can at least get back the cost of shipping. ONLY DO THIS IF YOU ARE SURE YOU AREN'T GOING TO GET REIMBURSED.
Into your clothes? Why not just print directly on your skin and display a picture of an outfit. Thay way, it always fits, and if you need to switch from formal to informal, it can be done with the remote control you carry in your pocket... damn. Nevermind.
I think this is definately a good thing. There are so many instances where a "higher up" takes credit for something someone else has done. Hell, some people have made a career out of it. I can think of several times in my own life when I didn't receive credit, simply because I was the "young guy." When I was 19 I was interning for a consulting company, and I happened to solve a problem for one of our large accounts. When the customer came by the credit was given to an older tech. When I approached my boss about it later he said, "We can't have them thinking our important projects are being completed by teenagers." I thought IT would be the ONE field where age discrimination would not abound, but alas, that is not the case. Maybe this will send a message to people everywhere that young != dumb.
Microsoft's biggest selling point in the past has been that it was the de facto standard on the desktop. As a sysadmin, I'm glad that Windows has a standard look and feel, because many of my older users didn't grow up with computers and have a hard time working with them anyway. However, as a geek, I see that there is definately a place for Linux, both at home and in the workplace. Despite what Microsoft says, Linux is becoming a player in the desktop and server game, albeit slowly (for now). As Linux gains "market share," interoperability, and open standards will be more important than ever. Many people will have several different platforms. If MS refuses to "play well with others," they may lose some customers. MS boxes will be with us for a while, but working with the guys from Samba may prolong their lifespan.
Win2k locks up when you copy large files? I haven't seen this problem. I have a P4 system with 256 MB RAM, I have Win2k and Mandrake 8.0 dual boot. I have the ISOs for Mandrake on the Win2k partition and I copied them to another folder with no problem. These are 650 MB files. I believe that when you copy a file 2k reads a chunk and then writes it, then repeats. I wouldn't make sense to try to copy the entire contents into memory then write it. Besides there may not be enough concurrent sectors to store it, so it would have to break it into chuncks anyway. Anyway, I think if this were a widespread problem we would have seen a patch a while back. just my opinion.
Since there was a description of Dell hardware of about that value on that row, and Dells generally come preloaded with an OS, one can assume that was cost of the hardware with OS. It appeared to me that they included hardware costs in the Unix Cost Analysis as well.
I do have one problem with the article, though. The neglected to take into consideration what was best for the students (typical of a college). In the current state of things, a large number of college graduates that go on to work will be using a Microsoft operating system. If students from College A have no experience with Windows, they will be at a disadvantage from those who graduated from College B, who had Windows AND *nix. I think an institution of learning should let their students have a choice, not saddle them with one or the other.
The article implies that the gambling part was embedded in a different law. According to Wired, Rep. Michael Castle (R-Delaware) "unsuccessfully tried to remove the language through an amendment."
There are two things that I see wrong with this.
1) If they take away all our freedom in order to "protect" us from terrorism, then the terrorists have already won, there will be nothing left to protect.
2) Every law should have to be voted on seperatly. No more of this "bundling" of special interest laws with legit stuff. I.E. Setting off nuclear weapons on the steps of the Capitol is a felony, and, oh yeah, you can't use your credit cards to play roulette in your underwear. If you don't vote for this bill, you are pro-terrorism, and No, we can't take the gambling part out.

Were you taking LSD at the time? I've heard it can cause that, too. :-)

Mine aren't in alphbetic order... I have a QWERTY keyboard.

I did a little rewiring of mine... Hooked it to a 220 power supply. I use it to weld my co-workers computer cases shut. We all need a hobby, I guess.
This is why we HAVE law enforcement, so we don't have to rely on vigilante justice. This isn't the old west anymore.
