That was ridiculous. Once device to rule them all? Please.... The truly important mobile apps are already available on Windows (and every other OS) via a browser. Native x86 Windows apps running on mobile devices will pretty much useless on anything less than a 10" tablet with a keyboard and mouse.
I don't think anyone really wants want Microsoft is selling which, ultimately, is just another walled garden. They will effectively negate the best thing about Windows, namely the freedom to do whatever you want on it. I'll be very surprised if they can pull this off.
There are very cool things under the hood indeed but Metro on Server 2012 never ceases to annoy me. The new server manager, while offering access to more information, manages to fit less of it on a large screen than ever before. I am sick of scrolling.
As for Win 8, the only thing I really miss on Win 7 is the new file copy dialog box but Teracopy is a reasonable substitute.
Or they could just include a case. I mean seriously, a TPU case would add pennies to the cost of a phone. They work wonderfully and should be standard equipment along with a power adapter and a cable. I'd prefer a case and a screen protector over headphones which I now have a drawer full of. Seems like a good marketing gimmick too. Everyone will know what kind of phone you have if you're using the included case.
I think that Windows 8 is going to backfire on Microsoft.
Most current Windows PC users are going to be instantly put off by "metro" on the desktop. It serves no immediate purpose and just makes it harder and less convenient to do many common things you already know how to do. There is a learning curve there and the interface only becomes efficient with some help or google searches and some practice. There is simply no reason (at this time, anyway) for it to exist on my desktop PC and it's annoying me. No other version of Windows has made me jump through quite this many hoops to do basic tasks
On a tablet it might work and it might work well. However.... I doubt MS can make a $200 windows tablet any time soon and that's the price point they will need to hit. Besides nearly everyone who wanted an iPad or iPhone probably has one by now, even if they normally use a PC. I think Windows 8 will drive millions of PC owning, happy iPad/iPhone users into the arms of Apple rather than entice them them to ditch their iPads and buy a Windows 8 Tablet. They are already tempted and if they have to learn something new, it may as well be Apples OS. When it comes time for a new PC, i think Apple can get a lot of sales, especially if they drop their PC/Laptop prices a bit. Also... I think most people running Windows 7 will not need new hardware for quite some time. The crop of PCs from the last 3 or 4 years are already overpowered for most home users. I don't see many of us buying just an OS upgrade either.
It's pretty obvious that Microsoft's ultimate goal here is to create an Apple-like walled garden. Initially, the wall won't be as high but there will be a wall. Don't forget this. They desperately want a successful iTunes/Apps Store/Google Play, etc...
Apart from "metro" There's little in Windows 8 that couldn't have been included in a Win 7 SP2. And nothing important that you can't already do in Windows 7 with a few downloads. While the core OS is solid, I still think we have another WinMe/Vista on our hands. Nobody asked for this.
Lets say for a moment that gun control laws would have kept this individual from acquiring them. Waiting for the movie to let out and then driving a vehicle at high speed into the crowd would likely kill and injure as many or more people. If someone loses their mind and wants to kill people, there is little we can do to stop them. It's tragic, but it's part of the price of a free country.
With significant encouragement from EA by way of uncapped player levels, a million unlocks, and no official servers. A huge number of players seem to be playing (and often cheating or stat padding) for themselves with little regard for their team. Not to mention that every server has different rules. While there are still good rounds of BF3 to be had, it can be hours before you encounter one. I don't see myself buying another BF game unless they cap player levels and bring back official servers.
It's a shame that what is probably be the best team shooter ever has been mostly ruined by EA's relentless catering to the lowest common denominator.
I used to play a lot of COD. I see little reason not to switch back if this is how EA wants players to play their game. Hopefully something better will come along.
Tribes has been more reliable fun than BF3, lately.
Can anyone explain how a Gadget is more dangerous than any other piece of software you might download and execute? Microsoft didn't. I think they just want to get rid of Gadgets. They closed the shop months ago.

I'd love to see a Frys or Microcenter in Maryland.
Last week I went to 6 stores, including Staples, Walmart a few small computer shops, and even a video game store, looking for a mid-range video card and had to fall back to an overpriced card from BB. I felt so dirty.
Online shopping is really the only way to go here.
I did IT work for the military during a war but not in a war zone and it was the worst job of my life. Military IT is a nightmare even without the possibility of being shot at. The bureaucracy will probably kill you first. Then there's the moral dilemma of the war itself. How 'patriotic' or mercenary are you?
Finally, be warned that the Mil IT jobs are rarely as described. I was quite shocked at how different the reality was.

They would make a killing if they added character classes, experience points and unlocks to the MS Office online suite.
... I can say that the waste and inefficiency at NASA is for worse than in DOD (which I worked in for 20 years).
This would be for the best... if you are looking to eliminate waste.
If this is true then good riddance. The DOD is a money flushing machine.

Just block it all together. Not worth it.
How does one get a key for downgrade rights anyway?
I just posted this on reddit yesterday:

...both on the DOD side and on contractor side. But god forbid we cut their budget.

So why can't I buy a rocket launcher then?

I have had the quite the opposite experience with Fry's. They've never refused a return and there have been many.
I'd love to see a Frys or Microcenter in Maryland.

Nice to know we can afford to build spy satellites that we don't need. We have our priorities straight.
Looks like only Amazon is selling the ebook.
Yet again.
""Hot on the heels of the most successful storage mediums of all time — MiniDisc and Zip disks"
Don't forget about Memory Sticks. The world is holding it's breath for another proprietary storage medium from Sony.
This. I wish you luck but I doubt I will ever watch a video on Slashdot.

You are being played.

I tried overclocking but did not fined the performance gain worth the effort.
