  1. Re:Not seen before? on New Generation of MP3 Players, New Features · · Score: 1

I finally upgraded to an iRiver iHP-120 from an old Archos and am very pleased. Highly recommended.

    My main requirements were:

    - Automatically detected (no additional drivers required) as a USB 2.0 Drive when plugged into a Win2k or XP machine.

    - Drag and drop mp3s. No software needed.

    - Autoresume.

    - Smaller than the Archos. (though I must admit that those blue rubber bumpers saved my ass on many occasion)

    - Reasonably good interface.

    iRiver satisfies all of these.

I did try out the Rio Karma player but brought it back almost immediately. It took the Rio software two hours to index my 20,000 or so mp3s and then it tried to do it again for no apparent reason.
Not to mention the square shape just sucked.

iRiver does have SRS, WOW and Trubass but it's unlikely you'd ever want turn them on. All I got out of it was less volume. Just a gimmick if you ask me.

  2. Re:Not a good deal at all on Starz, RealNetworks Offer Movie Download Service · · Score: 1

I'm cancelling my netflix account because I rarely watch more than 3 netflix movies a month. This is because:

1.) I'm a lazy SOB and either don't watch the movies soon after they arrive or forget to mail the DVDs back or both. Then tend to sit around way too long.

2.) I have a hard time finding things I want to watch on Netflix. I'm too lazy to do much research and rely on things jumping out at me. Never much of a problem in a real store. Maybe its just me but it appears that Netflix has a limited selection and are slow to get new releases.

3.) I keep running across things I want to watch on USENET or bittorrent so I download them and watch them, delaying the watching of what ever I got from Netflix and minimizing my investment.

4.) No instant gratification with Netflix. If I feel like watching something right now but the movies haven't arrived, that sucks.

Now, I would pay money to be able to browse recent releases and download 600-1500 MB films that I can play anywhere (even if the file self destructs) and is of comparable quality to what is being released by the rippers these days. I could live with a download time of several hours if necessary.

I also use the 'iFree' and it gets the job done pretty well. I don't get the range that the previous poster claims but it works fine from the couch (8-10 feet) Batteries don't last as long as the Scorpius keyboard I used previously. Had to replace that one as my 2.5 year old daughter tends to beat the crap out of these when she gets her hands on them, which is frequently. Couldn't find a replacement Scorpius at the time so I bought the iFree instead.

    Some more thoughts:
Get one with a trackball. The joystick type devices don't give you the same control

The 'versapoint' stuff is overrated and VERY overpriced.

Get RF not IR. IR is frustrating when you're lying on the couch.

  17. more tips.... on Good Online FPS Games/Servers For Beginners? · · Score: 1

Keep track of servers you like. Don't just join a random server every time you want to play. There are alot slight variations in server setups that can throw your game and make the learning curve more difficult. Use something like All Seeing Eye or Gamespy to track your favorites if necessary and when you find servers you like, go back. Play real team games. Generally speaking, you will die alot more playing deathmatch/team deathmatch oriented game types. These can be fun from time to time but capture/retrieve/destroy/ mission oriented games are more fun IMO, and will teach you more. Cheaters also tend to be caught and dealt with quicker. When you find a game type you like, stick with it for while. Don't switch around until you are comfortable with it. Don't get too frustrated by losing. Nobody wins all the time (well maybe a few). Just stick with it. I've been paying online FPS since doom and still get spanked royally on occasion. (ok.. frequently) Give Call of Duty a try. It's not too complicated/not too simple and is new enough that you won't always be completely out-classed. It's also one of most stable games, right out of the box, ever relased... in the tradition of Quake. Everything just works and feels right. And finally, and this is the key to EVERY FPS: Learn the maps. Learn them well. Play them until you know where everything is and what the most popular strategies are. This will give you your greatest advantage.

I don't know what the hell everyone's problem is... I guess they expect everyone to be as selfish as they are.

Anyway... for 7K I'd bet you could have this done professionally but if I were going to try it myself, I'd get two or 3 access points (bridges), install them on one floor and arrange them so I get the best coverage. Then I'd duplicate that arrangement on every floor. Assuming I'm going to maintain the wired internet connection, I'd place the WLAN behind a NAT router running DHCP. I'd put my own network behind another router/firewall, adjacent to the WLAN. I'd keep the WLAN open and tell everyone they are on their own as far as security goes and I would provide no support other than keeping the internet connection up and keeping the APs functional. It should be pretty much maintenance free once it's running.

The hardest and possibly most expensive part will be running cables to all the access points. Depending on how your building is constructed you may need more access points.

    Good luck.
